West Lancs at the RYA Junior Club Championships.

The club was proud to be invited to take part in the inaugural Junior Club Championship hosted by Northampton Sailing Club. Qualification was achieved through the amazing results achieved by our sailors at the Northwest Junior and Youth Traveller Series.

A last minute invite, and conflicting schedules, meant that a team of relatively inexperienced juniors was pulled together to get our entry confirmed with hours to spare! A few weeks of training for our RS Feva sailors was crammed in around the 24hr race, certainly needed as none of the sailors had sailed in one before let alone raced one. A huge thanks to commodore Andrew and junior instructor Ollie for helping coordinate these training sessions.

Whilst results didn't go our way over the weekend, the team came away having thoroughly enjoyed themselves and experienced an amazing event. Our RS Feva sailors managed to achieve 5th overall in the Feva fleet, with several 3rd places. A huge achievement given the lack of experience in the class. A special shout out goes to crew Sam who jumped in last minute to complete the team despite having only sailed his first independent race a month earlier.

Now that the dust has settled, we can congratulate the West Lancashire Yacht Club teams that took part in last weekends 24hr race.

Our A Team, sailing a GP14, put together an amazing performance once again. Plenty of hardwork, great teamwork, and a clean race ended with a result to be proud of. The team brought back two trophies to the club:
The Warren Cup - 3rd place overall
The Lancashire Evening Post Trophy - Leading Lancashire club

Also sailing a GP14, our B Team enabled a wide range of club members, from as young as 12, to experience the race which for some was their first 24hr experience! Despite being t-boned on the opening laps, they finished a well earned 54th place.

Several club members also featured in teams for other sailing organisations. (If we've missed anyone out, comment below!)

Due to several deployments leaving the Royal Naval Association team short, club junior Ollie stepped in last minute. With the team he finished 11th overall, picking up the Papercourt Trophy for 2nd Enterprise.

Former juniors Kristian and Amber were part of the Solent and Portsmouth University Alliance team sailing in an Enterprise. They picked up the Porter Trophy for the fastest 50th lap, finishing 38th overall.

And finally, a massive thank you goes out to all the volunteers who stepped up throughout the weekend. From safety, scrutineering, first aid, catering, observing and so many more roles the event wouldn't have been possible without you all.

It's been a fantastic weekend, all made possible because of all of the sailors, volunteers and supporters of this unique event. Thank you for all of your efforts bit on and off the water.

We hope to see you next year on 11th and 12th September 2027. Once the waters have calmed down from this year, we'll let you when and how you can book your spot.

Sun, sea, and a fleet of mirrors 73 strong greeted West Lancs members Kaye and Freya at this year's Abersoch Mirror Week.
For Freya, one of our youngest junior sailors, this was her first event outside the club. Given the scale of the event, and the fact that this is her first season of regular crewing, this is a massive achievement.
In a boat that became progressively more race tuned throughout the week, the pair finished the week with a great set of final results:
55th Overall
20th silver fleet
3rd Gaff rigged boat

Well done to all the North West Region sailors that took part, it's great to see so many local boats achieving such good results.

Team WLYC was on tour again, with club juniors Ollie and Poppy making the trip north for Bassenthwaite Sailing Clubs annual Bass Week. Competing in both the RS200 and the event itself for the first time.
Technical difficulties and interesting weather conditions made for a rocky start, but by the end of the week they began to produce some solid results in a fleet made up mostly of more experienced adults.
A great effort from both, and we all look forward to seeing you progress in a new class. ⛵⛵

Blustery conditions kept the first junior summer race coaching session ashore, with sailors focusing on race fitness and starting theory. The big kids managed to hit the water for some high speed sailing, with a capsize or two!

Looking forward to the next session and being able to put into practice what we've learned. ⛵⛵

The summer sailing season kicked off with glorious sunshine at the second annual John Dennis trophy day. A great turnout from club sailors resulted in close racing, with it all to play for right up until the last race.

A special mention is needed for the club's junior sailors that took part. In a fleet of 36 entries just under half involved a junior sailor, either solo or paired with an adult. With the results achieved reflecting all the hard work put in this season.

As always without the hard work of club members volunteering their time to run these events, both on and off the water, races like this wouldn't happen. So a big thank you to them!
