If you’re new to squats, especially barbell back squats, it can be tricky to know if you’re getting deep enough to maximise results

Depth should be thighs parallel with the floor or hips level/just below the knees (for us average Joes, competitors and athletes tend to go arse to grass)

But it can be difficult to judge if you’re getting that deep, so a good way to know you’re hitting the correct depth and building that strength in the optimal range of movement is to use a bench or box.

When sat your thighs should be level with knees or parallel with the floor, then just tap the bench with your bum and stand back up. Over time you can remove the bench and you will have trained your body and your awareness to hit the right depth.

Cable pulley machines can be a daunting thing to gym newbies, especially if the pulley needs adjusting and there’s lots of attachments laying around.

Although simple to use, if you’re new to the gym and very self conscious a pulley cable machine can be very off putting, especially if the area around it is a mess and there’s too many attachments to choose from.

But fear not, there’s always a much simpler freeweight or bodyweight version, minimal set up, minimal fuss, can do it anywhere.

Grab a dumbbell, lay on the floor and perform tricep extensions. This trains the triceps in the same way but with minimal set up and fuss, and you can do it anywhere in the gym.
