Quads are back 🔥

After an 8 week hiatus from quad training due to a nasty bout of patella tendonopathy it felt amazing to finally get under some weight again 💪🏼

Also discovering I had oedema’d femur marrow and a grade III meniscus tear, post shows this year will definitely need following up on, but for now as we have no pain we crack on 😈

Nothing amazing but second week back and already back to 5 plates on the hack and 100kg on extensions and despite all the shaking 😅 I’m a happy man lol

Strength in Prep 💪🏼

Loss of strength in prep or dieting phase is an inevitability, but it shouldn’t be happening until you’re approaching competitive condition ❌

If strength is dropping before then there’s a good chance you’re restricting too much, or pushing output way too high too soon 😮‍💨

Here’s me, 4 weeks into prep, hitting an all time best for both my top set and back off set on 15 degree smith press 🔥

There’s a reason preps are 14-20 weeks long (depending on condition at the start) and not 6 weeks, this is to ensure body fat loss is gradual & doesn’t encroach on training performance until you have no option 🙏🏼

Last year my strength held until around 3/4 weeks out, by this stage body fat was very low, food low and output still high, but I was still progressing until 6-7 weeks out before having to maintain 💪🏼

Yes weights you’re lifting at this stage should be sacrificed for reduced risk of injury. No one cares what you lift on stage if your pec or tricep is torn off 🙈

For the majority of prep you should be in a calorie deficit enough to maintain training performance as much as possible ✅

This doesn’t mean refeed every time you feel tired or lack energy, but nutrient timing as well as sleep, hydration and all other recovery markers should be optimised so for that 90-120 mins you’re in the gym you can give it as much as possible 🙌🏼

What started as a lifestyle change up and fat loss goal evolved into an epic photoshoot prep! 📸🙌🏼

What I love most about these photos is that they are proof that no matter what you can achieve your goal 🏆

At 51 years of age, navigating perimenopause & managing conditions including Hashimotos and an underactive thyroid, hormonal changes.. Nichola embraced it head on 👊🏼

Did we have doubts at times, yes, but Nichola wanted this, and at the end of the day that’s what it boils down to. She ignored the noise, overcame the self doubt, did the work & I couldn’t be more proud of her 🤗

Still more fantastic shots from this shoot to come & we continue now building a bigger, stronger, version 2.0 of Nichola yet 💪🏼

Had a great pull session over at Factory Gym with big Josh trying out some new pieces especially loving the Newtech machines👌🏼

Lats absolutely toast after these 4 movements, biceps added to finish up to complete this weeks training 🔥

Prep really feels like it’s firing now, strength flying & sooner or later we’ll be seeing the results of what we’ve been working for over the past years off season 💪🏼

Push B 💪🏼

Lifts holding well, pressing still a rep or two off ATB numbers but isolations still climbing ✅

Now health phase is complete another week back on cycle should see rep numbers climb again, at the moment it seems like the arms are feeling it 😅

Really enjoy these Panatta flies as I get a fantastic engagement with my upper chest 🙌🏼 slight chest ping on the last set of smith press so decided to leave my second press for the day out 🙏🏼

All being said very happy with strength going into prep and can’t wait for things to ramp up and really get this going 🔥

During this health phase we already scaled back food a touch and weight is sitting down around 3.5kg from peak off season, strength has held really well and can’t wait to get this prep started 💪🏼

Push A 💪🏼

Nice and quiet in the gym yesterday for a solid push session ✅

Not a session I record a lot as the areas are very busy so good to be able to see some of the movements back 📸

Coming to the end of the health phase now and strength has taken a slight hit, still moving the same weights at peak strength just a few reps down, food has also come down and & at 2.5kg down it’s to be expected 🙏🏼

Next week (bloods permitting) prep begins and we ramp things back up and j fully expect the numbers to come back up 🔥

Always my absolute pleasure to see the girls in their element, funny, hard working, dedicated & always a positive energy from them whether it’s a voice not after their workouts or seeing them minutes before stage 🏆

Derry is a city that I feel a special connection to, I’ve competed there, supported clients there and have many clients from the area as well as my coach 🇮🇪 definitely feels like a second home now ☺️

Was fantastic to see so many competitors at such a high standard, clients and friends, and I look forward to coming back and stepping on the Millennium stage again 💪🏼
