My shoulder is still teaching me lessons.

And today’s lesson was pretty simple…

You’re not quite there yet, mate.

I’ve been trying to get my shoulder press beyond 10kg, so today I decided to see where I was.

I warmed up with 7.5kg.
Added a small increment and went to 8.5kg.
Then managed 10kg relatively comfortably.

So naturally I thought…

12.5kg. Let’s have it.

Nope. 😂

Failed miserably.

A few months ago I probably would have been frustrated by that. Today I just took it for what it was — feedback.

I dropped back to 10kg, added a smaller increment and worked from there.

That’s what this shoulder rehab continues to teach me.

Progress isn’t about proving what you think you should be able to do.

It’s about finding out what you can do today, working with it, and gradually moving the line forward.

Six months ago I couldn’t press anything.

Not long ago, 2.5kg was painful.

Now 10kg is becoming manageable.

So 12.5kg can wait.

The shoulder has spoken.

For now. 😏

Happy birthday to my beautiful wife.

I was looking through my phone trying to find photos and videos to put together a little birthday montage for her.

Surprisingly nearly every video I’ve got of her, she’s training.

Lifting weights, doing squats, pressing something or generally making whatever I’m doing look easier than it should.

Looking back through them it’s great to see just how far she’s come.

Over the last couple of years she’s really got into her strength training. She’s consistent, she works hard and she’s become bloody strong.

A little too strong in some things if you ask me.

She’s currently stronger than me on a few presses, but we won’t dwell on that. I’ve got a shoulder excuse and I’m sticking with it. Even if she adopts the well known wife tactic of selective hearing.

So to my beautiful wife, my best friend, my training partner and the person who’s been beside me through some pretty big ups and downs.

Who makes me laugh, keeps me grounded and occasionally puts me in my place.

And now I don’t drink, she even makes sure there’s no unnecessary wastage on my behalf. Very thoughtful of her.

Happy birthday, Sweetheart.

Without Waxx.

Now just give me a few months to catch you up on those presses.

Have you ever caught yourself saying:

“I’m probably getting a bit old for weights now.”

I hear it more often than you might think.

But surely that’s exactly when we should be thinking about getting stronger?

Not to lift ridiculous weights.
Not to become a bodybuilder.
Just to make everyday life a little easier.

Getting out of a chair. Carrying the shopping. Walking the dog. Doing the garden. Playing with the grandchildren. Enjoying holidays without worrying whether your body can keep up.

That’s what strength training is really about.

And that’s what we’re doing at Hengistbury Head Outdoors.

We’ve got people of different ages, different abilities and different levels of experience training together. Nobody cares what weight you’re lifting. You start where you are, and we help you progress from there.

There’s a really good bunch of people, plenty of encouragement and usually a fair bit of laughter along the way.

So if you’ve been watching our posts and thinking “I wonder if I could do that?”

Come and join us. You absolutely can.

Getting older is inevitable.

Getting weaker doesn’t have to be.
