Drowning can happen quickly and often silently in any water environment, so children must never be left unsupervised around water even for a moment. This includes baths, paddling pools, buckets, garden water features, swimming pools, and open water such as ponds, lakes, or the sea.

Research shows that a large proportion of child drowning incidents occur when a child is not being actively supervised by an adult. This underlines the importance of keeping young children within arm’s reach whenever they are in or near water at home or elsewhere.

Lapses in supervision can be brief such as stepping away to answer the door or grab something from another room or longer periods where a child is left alone or only in the care of other children. Constant, close adult supervision is essential whenever water is present.

The Water Safety Code is the cornerstone of water safety education, offering easy-to-remember tips that can save lives. Whether you're at home, by the coast, or near any body of water, this code helps you make quick, informed decisions and know what to do in an emergency.

The Water Safety Code Includes:

Stop and Think: Assess your surroundings. Identify potential dangers and follow local safety signs and advice.

Stay Together: Always go with friends or family when near water. Swim only at lifeguarded locations.

And In an Emergency:

Call 999: If you're at the coast, request the Coastguard. Never enter the water to perform a rescue.

Float: If you fall in or become tired, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help. If someone else is in trouble, throw something that floats to them.

It’s . Throughout this week, we’ll be working alongside the RLSS to raise awareness of water safety, with the aim of reaching and educating as many people as possible.

In this powerful and moving interview, the brave mothers of Sunnah Khan and Joe Abbess speak about their children, who tragically lost their lives to a rip current while swimming off Bournemouth beach.

Both share deeply personal and emotional accounts of their loss, highlighting the profound grief it has caused.
