Jiu jitsu is very simple. Let me explain.
Everyone starts at absolutely the same level - white belt.
No matter what your background is. Who you are. How old you are. Your gender. Your size. Your net worth. You start as a white belt and that’s a firm rule.
At first you are humbled. I was served a large dose of humble pie during my first session. I realised how absolutely s**t I would’ve been if I ever was caught in a situation I had to protect and defend either myself or someone else.
“It’s better to be a warrior in a garden than a gardener in a war”.
As the months and years roll by you learn not just a technique but the philosophy. Much like what I preach to my clients who I coach, it’s not about the fancy fluff. It’s about mastering basics. It’s the essence of the recipe.
It’s not about being the best on the mats. It’s about being the best version of yourself. Myself.
I got my purple belt today. It is half way to the coveted black belt.
Every time I train I am learning, finessing, perfecting.
I will never be perfect. I will never be the best. There will always be someone who chews me up and spits me out. Someone who humbles me. Someone who ragdolls me.
But I’m not trying to beat them.
I’m trying to beat myself. That’s the only competition that matters. Me today is my best reference point for me tomorrow.
The rule of 1%. Every time.
Here’s the real reason I like jiu jitsu.
No matter what my day has been like - dopamine enriched or cortisol ridden - that hour on the mats has the power to make me totally forget about any sense of reality.
It’s about engaging the primitive cogs inside the body.
Living in the very moment you’re alive.
For some, jiu jitsu is a sport. For others, jiu jitsu goes far beyond physical fitness. It delves into mental health and basic human principles of survival, overcoming, adversity, hierarchy and self actualisation in every corner of development.
Thankyou to , , and Jorn (Mr no social media) for the years of opportunity, coaching and community.
And thankyou to every grappler out there who I’ve ever had the privilege of surviving against.
