Our final POTM night was held at the club on Saturday evening. Another great time had be all as we celebrate the achievements through August and the beginning of September.
Congratulations to our POTM vote winners: Sameer Awan, Ewan Jenkins and Hameedullah Auryakhail and to our captain’s pick winners: Ishan Ul-Haq, Oliver Blevins-Clarke and Sam Marshall.
We look forward to our final weekend of cricket for the season with our 1st and 4th teams both in action.

1st XI Match Report
SSCC 1st XI vs Peterlee CC 1st XI
Saturday 6th September 2026

The smugs faced Peterlee in our penultimate game of the season. As always Appo was the tosser, Peterlee won and put Shields into bat. The lads got off to a poor start, Buck dismissed Appo(1) caught Rathbone, he then dismissed the pro Lasith(0). Other opener Garraghan then dismissed Appleby(4) bowled. At 11-3 things looked gloomy. A rebuild then started with Awan and Clements before last months POTM Awan (14) was trapped lbw by Buck. Clements then followed for a well made 29, Buck collecting his 4th wicket caught by Walker. The legend Ul Haq and Carr were then at the crease, both had classy innings’, before Carr(25) was bowled by Peterlee’s Aussie McKenna. The legend Ul Haq, who was missing his boro compratiate Nasar who welcomed the birth of a child this week (congrats Nasar and partner), was then caught Buck bowled Bhatt for 26. 2nd team POTM Jenkins (the Whiteleas turtle) and star boy Stephenson then had the game’s highest partnership of 62. The turtle was then caught by McKenna bowled Walker for 25. Big nose at one end, big lugs at the other, Stepho was joined by Thompson at the crease. Stephenson, the top scorer in the game with 31, was bowled by Walker. Muchall then joined his apprentice Tomma at the end. Tomma ended with a typical red inker with a well made 19 not out while Muchall, who seems to have gained speed from his new wheels, ended with 3 not out.

For the second week running the smugglers managed to get a score of 200+ hoping that this week they could defend it. 203/9.

Opening the bowling for the lads was Muchall and Oliver ’Monty’ Appleby. Peterlee got off to a good start with overseas McKenna and captain Sullivan at the crease. Stephenson (from the Stephenson end) and Thompson (from the Muchall end) replaced the two openers. The breakthrough was found in Thompson’s first over when Sullivan(28) was caught behind by skipper Appo. Lugsy who was already off celebrating his 35th league wicket, didn’t quite see how good a take it actually was from the Hobbit. The 2nd wicket followed two overs later with an excellent bit of fielding from Appleby who ran out Devine(2). Pro Lasith was brought on to replace Stephenson. Peterlee’s number 4 Nicholson was going extremely well before the ‘great guy’ bowled him for 26. He then struck again 2 balls later when his mate Thompson took a low catch (never realised he could get that low) dismissing Rathbone for a duck. The favour was then returned in the next over with Lasith taking a sharp catch at first slip, Thompson dismissing both openers, McKenna falling for 22. Garraghan then fell in the same over, caught Lasith at first slip, bowled Thompson for 8. A flurry of wickets as Lasith then took his 3rd wicket trapping Walker for 0. From 52-1 to 94-7, the lads really showed their bowling prowess. However Buck and Bhatt showed some resistance at the crease leading to Muchall being brought back into the attack. The burglar was at it again! The big fella took the final 3 wickets Bhatt (7) lbw, Pearn (4) caught Carr. The final wicket, one for the purists, stumped Appleton bowled Muchall. A really strong showing from the smugglers bowling Peterlee out for 129.

Littletown awaits in our final game of the season where the lads will be hoping for back to back to wins to end the season so we can look forward to next season.

2nd XI Match Report
SSCC 2nd XI vs Hylton CCC 1st XI
Monday 31st August 2026

Bank Holiday Monday somehow brought the Shields massive another game of 2nd team cricket despite South Shields being under water the day prior.

As expected due to heavy rainfall the pitch was always going to be a testing one, hence a lot of pressure fell on the toss. Thankfully the toss went the way we wanted, as skipper on the day Barton won the toss and elected to bowl first. It was hoped by every player in the ground to bowl first except from Ewan Jenkins who showed great disappoint when finding out we had won the toss and bowled.

Hylton’s innings began as Shields would’ve hoped. Ewan “Whiteleas Wasim” Jenkins and R Vohra opened up. Vohra was the main strike bowler in the first 9 overs ending up with figures of 5 overs 1 maiden 14 runs and 3 wickets while Jenks applied the pressure only going for 4 runs in his first 5 overs. Then came the rain and the Shields lads were like an F1 pit crew getting them on in rapid time. Forced indoors whilst Hylton were 18-3, there was a lot of doubt in the home dressing room as to whether they could get back on. Thankfully the rain stopped and we got back on, whilst some would’ve thought the rainfall would dampen the mood it had the opposite effect. It gave The Whiteleas Wasim a breather meaning he could continue bowling rather than coming off after 5. Despite it being on no one’s bingo card, Jenks came out and bowled 9 straight through. He was excellent and after the rain he came out and took a wicket in each of his last 4 overs. Meanwhile James “Rodders” Hutchinson took one as well after taking over from Vohra up the hill. This took Hylton to 23-8. With Shields desperate to finish the innings off Hylton batters Devine and Roberts began to build a frustrating 9th wicket stand of 22 before the latter spooned one to Rodders bringing his knock to an end on 12. The final domino of the Hylton innings to fall was Devine as he got caught at gully on 20 bringing the Hylton innings to an end as they finished on 52 all out.

Shields run chase was to follow and with rain around the skipper decided to bump Ewan Jenkins up the order to open with himself.
This looked a good decision after Jenks smashed his first ball through the covers four four. It then proceeded to look like a terrible decision as he tried to put the next 3 balls onto Sunderland Road with his bat being in a different post code on the first 2 then on the 3rd he nicked off to the Hylton 1st slip.
Then came K Satishkumar (1) who never really settled in the middle before falling in a similar fashion to Jenks being caught at first slip. K Satishkumar’s demise brought Shields score to 12-2, Connor Bryden Joined BWP in the middle but did not last long as he played it onto his own stumps falling for 7. Shields were 19-3 and Hylton were thinking there could be turn in the tale… but alas, the pair of double barrels BWP and OBC then knocked it about and hit a few boundaries which is all the 2s needed when chasing a small target and this brought them to 50 with BWP on 31 and OBC on a solid 7. Then BWP decided not to lead by example by giving Hylton a 3rd chance at his wicket (what a clown) as their 1st slip swallowed his 3rd catch of the game, bringing Shields to 50-4 losing an all important batting point in the promotion race. Then boy wonder S Bradbury joined OBC in the middle where he launched the winning runs over mid off for 4 securing the lads 23 points and bumping them up to 2nd in the table… for now.

Special Mentions.

Jake Hutchinson - stepped in really well as Wicket keeper these past two games. Today he only let one bye through and took an excellent catch diving forward to his right (plus he’s sexy)
R Vohra - Excellent opening spell
Oliver Blevins-Clarke 2-13 and brought real calmness to the middle with his chance-less 7*

Now I know it’s beginning to look a bit biased at this point but he’s been a joke these last couple weeks, so this Bank holiday Mondays Temporary Match Report Secretary Man of the Match once again goes to Ewan “The Whiteleas Wizard” Jenkins and despite letting down the team with the bat he just about made up for it with the ball bowling 9 overs 8 maidens 4 wickets for just 4 runs; what a spell big fella. He also took a canny grab in the slips, well done.

All of us in the 2s wish Hylton the best of luck in their final game of the season. Whilst we look towards our massive game away at Easington next week.

2nd XI Match Report
SSCC 2nd XI vs South Hetton CC 1st XI
Saturday 29th August 2026

This Saturday, Monty’s merry men hosted South Hetton 1st XI at the theatre of dreams in a massive game in the promotion race.

As usual Oliver did a good bit of tossing as Shields won the toss and as usual elected to bat first.

Shields got off to a shaky start finding themselves at 26-2 with BWP and Skipper O Appleby falling for single figures. Opener K Satishkumar was joined by seasoned veteran Connor Bryden, Shields required a partnership and the two in the middle delivered with Satishkumar taking his time on a hard fought 35, before running past one. Shields found themselves at 76-3. At the other end Bryders played his typical game scoring an easy on the eye 37 including 7 fours, however all good things come to an end with Bryders throwing his wicket away shortly after Satishkumar departed. With Shields losing two key wickets at key times Keelan Clements then “faced the ball of the century” departing for a quack quack barely worth the walk to the crease.
That left Oliver Blevins-Clarke and Oliver Hall in the middle. OBC provided the Wood Terrace faithful an absolutely dreadful watch somehow slogging a painful 14 runs off 37 balls before South Hetton finally put the fans out of their misery getting him to chip one to mid on. O Hall continued his good form from last week scoring 35 before getting bowled around his legs. R Vohra was the last standout of the Shields innings finishing on an unbeaten 21 and with that the innings came to a close, Shields finishing on 183-9.

South Hetton began there run chase with the leagues leading run scorer A Hall at the crease. They got off to a reasonable start finding themselves on 31 before Rashed Mehmood got the huge wicket of A Hall with a nice diving catch off his own bowling. After that wicket Shields began to take control of the game with the top 4 of Hetton all falling at the hand of Rash who bowled 9 overs straight through taking 4 wickets for 28 runs. The game was looking firmly in Shields grasp despite some resilience from Tarum Namballa scoring 38 who fell to James “Rodders” Hutchinson. After that Monty’s merry men cruised to victory bowling South Hetton out for 135.

1st XI Match Report
Brandon CC 1st XI vs SSCC 1st XI
Saturday 29th August 2026

Appo’s entertainers faced the trip to Brandon, hoping to do the double over one of the leagues top sides. Brandon captain Gordon Muchall won the toss and put the smugglers into bat.

Opening up Luke ‘baloo’ Elliot and the little man Appo. Appo was the first to go when Goundry dismissed him caught behind for 1. Luke was then dismissed by his best mate Chris Stewart, who still hasn’t had laser removal on his South Shields tattoo.
At 15-2 things looked gloomy however, Lasith and Awan managed to get the lads to 102-3 before Awan was trapped lbw by ‘G’ Muchall for a solid 41. Lasith was then joined by the Boro delboy Nasar who unfortunately was unable to add to the score and was dismissed by Walker. Lasith and ‘the legend’ Ul Haq then put on a 76 partnership before the pro was dismissed by his Brandon counterpart Rollo for 83. Ul Haq went on to get 50 before being bowled and with this followed a flurry of wickets seeing Carr(3), Leslie (10), Stephenson(5). Muchall added a ‘cultured’ 11 off 5 before being runout (shock) with Thompson getting 1 not out.

Shields 235 all out.

A good score by Appo’s entertainers however, the lads knew they would have to bowl well against some of the leagues top batsmen to secure the double.

Opening up for the smugs was redbull athlete Josh Leslie and Muchall, rocking his new size 15 baby blue boots (which I forgot to mention last week). Opening up for Brandon was Peareth and Rutherford who got off to a quick start before Leslie got Rutherford (10) caught behind by Warwick Davis. Leslie then struck again with Walker (6) his latest victim caught by Lasith. Thompson and Stephenson grafted hard with no fortune. Peareth and Brandon’s Aussie pro Rollo put on a 55 partnership before Muchall re-entered the attack and dismissed Peareth (55), Carrsy (off the back of his first ever date) took what was most likely catch of the season, one handed in the slips. Ex Durham and Shields player Muchall then joined Rollo at the crease and they put on 64 before Rollo (59) was dismissed by Thompson who took a lot from his bowling master Muchall by burgling this one. At 185-4 it looked like Brandon were going to cruise to victory but the smugglers made it interesting. Stephenson, who was the pick of the bowlers on the day, got two identical wickets Goundry (13) and Gill (0), both were caught second slip by the redbull athlete. Thompson from the other end dismissing Burnham (0) caught by the Hobbit. Despite a flurry of wickets , the game finished with 13 shields lads on the pitch with Muchall (54*) and Stewart (9*) seeing the game out for Brandon.

Well done to our Under 12’s who defeated a good Whickham Cricket Club Under 12 team in the Red Sky Foundation County Cup Final this morning. This means they have qualified for the national rounds as Under 13s next season, this is the first time we have done so since 2018. The team really showed their strength in depth today and good character to recover from seemingly losing positions. Huge thanks to Uzair Afaq for all his hard work over the winter and the season to get the team to this level.

Thanks so much to Joanna at Nourish for leading the sessions, providing amazing prizes and certificates to her Cooking award winners at our end of camps party day yesterday.
