Raiders Vrs Durham Utd Tigers
Next up we were against Durham Tigers. With a head to head of 1 win each we were confident but cautious that we were capable of getting the win. Our first competitive game was against the tigers which we won 2-0 and our defeat from the Tigers finished 4-2.
This game started with both teams having spells in each other's final third. The deadlock was broken with some quick thinking from Archie Mc who took a quick throw into the box which Robbie got his head to before the Tigers keeper could react. It's was super smart play with the throw and a predatory finish to open the scoring.
Robbie then doubled our lead with another instinctive finish and minutes later was unfortunate not to add a third!
In the second half we continued to put on the pressure with a good amount of possession in the final third. However the Tigers used this to their advantage to counter attack and pull a goal back.
Possibly a game defining moment came down to another counter attack with James saving from a 1 on 1, making himself big in the goal to keep the game at 2-1!
Jak was moved up front for the final quarter of the game and he soon got his goal! A confident finish which he celebrated with his Mam on the sidelines 💕
Archie Mc put the game out of reach when he won and scored a penalty after being brought down in the box, smashing it past the keeper.
The Tigers pulled a goal back but it was too late to take the game away from us.
It was a team performance with everyone working hard but it was Robbie that picked up the Man of the match award for his dominant display and constant danger up front.
The Tigers man of the match for us went to Jenson with a textbook defensive display.

Catch up from last weekend....
The Raiders were up against new opponents, Whitburn Panthers.
The game started fairly slow from both teams with neither team taking control in the early stages. The deadlock was broken when we took the lead with a great run into the box from Frazer who finished in style.
The game fired into life with end to end attacking. It was whitburn who scored next and then luckily added another as the ball trickled over the line after a great save from James, although goal line technology might have saved us on this occasion.
The second half was a tightly fought contest but it was the Raiders that found the back of the net next with Jak beating the whitburn keeper. We were having plenty of possession at this point but struggling to break down our opponents in the final third. And unfortunately it was Whitburn that got the winning goal with the ball finding it's way over the line.
A bit of an unlucky result from another great performance.
Man of the match went to Archie G who was like a rock at the back.

On Saturday we were back in competitive action against familiar opponents, Whickham Fellside Warriors. Our head to head was a win each in league games and a friendly win for the Raiders.
Our boys started on the front foot, spending the first 2 or 3 minutes up the field only for the game to flip seeing us pressed back into our own half. We conceded twice with 2 great great finishes. Jack got us back into the match with his first goal putting the ball nicely past the keeper.
We were then caught out twice going forward giving Whickham a 4-1 lead going into half time.
In the second half we were denied twice by the wood work including a penalty that came back off the crossbar and a chance from Robbie that went agonisingly wide of the post.
The game finished 4-1 to Whickham although the game seemed a lot closer in possession and chances.
Man of the match went to Harrison (Haz) for his magic down the left of midfield and fearless battling.
Well done to all the boys, it just wasn't our day. great effort as always though and never gave up.

Yesterday we were back in action, this time against Seaham United. Our head to head is a win a piece so we anticipated a close game. The Raiders got off to a great start, Jaks low shot looked to be going in but Seahams goalkeeper managed to get a hand to it however the ball fell to the feet of Harrison (Harra) who got enough on the ball to get it over the line.
The Raiders were looking good for the lead but were being put under pressure from a couple of corners and it was here Seaham pulled level. Again we were playing some great football and through Robbie we took the lead once again to give us a 2-1 lead into half time.
The Raiders started the 2nd half at a fast pace continuing to link up well in the final third but were unable to get the ball over the line. There were chances from both sides but it was a quick 2 goal turnaround from Seaham which gave them the lead for the first time in the game. The boys didn't let their heads drop and kept playing great football and with our opponents creating chances James was called into action between the sticks with some great saves which kept us in the game. We were soon level again, this time Archie Mc getting in on the action. It didn't stay level for long before we were again a goal down. It felt like a harsh scoreline given all the positive play and possession but our boys again didn't want to accept defeat even with just a minute or 2 left to play! With one last throw of the dice and again some great link up play in the final third Archie Mc found himself put through on goal and with only the goalkeeper to beat he did just that!
What an entertaining game from both teams, the commitment and determination was second to none and both teams gave it their all.
It was a difficult call for man of the match and we ended up sharing it between James and Jack. Well done to both teams for a game to remember!

After a bit of a break over Easter the boys were back in action again on Saturday. This was the first game of the Spring Cup, in which we have 4 new teams in our group taking the places of the 4 which have moved up. But it was a familiar opponent in Belmont United, which we ended the league against with a fabulous 2-1 victory.
The Raiders started the match well, however it was Belmont that took the lead against the run of play. The scoreline incredibly stayed at 0-1 with first Jak firing a shot past the keeper but unfortunately against the post, and then with the rebound, Harrison Y (Harra) chested the ball down and struck a volleyed shot against the other post!
It was a new face for the Raiders, Archie Mc, playing in his first competitive match with us that got us on level terms tucking in a neat finish beyond the keeper before running off to celebrate with his new team mates 🤫
The second half started in similar fashion with the Raiders playing some great football but unable to add a second. That was until Archie Mc stepped up to take a free kick, 30 yards out at the side line firing it into the top corner with the goal keeper unable to do anything about it!! And with the scoreline the same as our previous meeting this is how the game ended!
A top class performance from all the boys and it was a dream debut for Archie Mc which earned him the man of the match award!!

Today we played our last league game of the season. Our final opponents were Belmont United Falcons.
The boys were in high spirits for this game and keen to finish the season on a high.
We kicked off with the wind against us but not to let it spoil our spirits the lads immediately got stuck into things.
Zac opened the scoring for the Raiders with a lovely finish from just outside the box. The first half saw a very satisfying display of passing with a strong defensive display which put us 1 - 0 up at the half way mark.
We went into the second half with the wind now in our favour. Robbie turned on the style with great ball technique and his magic eventually had us 2 goals up. There were further chances for both teams but it was Belmont that found the net next. The closing minutes were a bit tense without the 2 goal cushion but we were able to see out the game just as it was starting to get a bit fiesty.
Man of the match went to Jenson for a solid display, however it was a great team performance to end the league season on a high! Well done to all the boys in the team today and over the whole season, they've been amazing through all the challenges we've faced.

The boys were back in action on Saturday and we'd also like to welcome Archie into the team and making his first appearance.
Our opponents were Seaham United. Having lost earlier in the season to Seaham the boys were keen to get even and started the game with a fast pace. Our midfield linked up brilliantly with Robbie up front, Jack in the middle battling hard and Harrison and Frazer adding pace in the wide positions. The pressure paid off with Robbie opening the scoring leaving Seaham keeper unable to get near his blistering shot. Zac and Jak also added some wizardry in midfield. The Raiders then added a second goal with Jak breaking into the box with some amazing footwork before firing an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net.
The third came with the goalkeeper spilling the ball and Robbie instinctively pressuring to collect the ball and put it into the empty net!
Seaham's keeper then saved from the spot denying Robbie his hat trick. Our opponents pulled a goal back and looked like they were getting back into the game but Finley, Jenson and Archie stood solid before Harrison calmly slotted in a fourth to wrap up the game.
Throw in some top quality saves from James and this was such a complete performance from all the boys and a real pleasure to watch!
Man of the match was a tough one and went to Robbie for his brace and fantastic link up play.

The boys were back in action again today after missing last weekends fixture due to the snow.
Our opponents for this fixture were Whickham Reds and this was our third game against them. Previously we'd drawn 6-6 in a thrilling friendly and then went down 4-2 in another entertaining game earlier in the season.
This game followed on where the last meeting left off and didn't disappoint with end to end action and plenty of chances resulting in another 6 goal thriller!
Zac opened the scoring with a 'bend it like Beckham' corner kick which nestled into the far corner!
The Reds got back on level terms not long after with an unfortunate deflection from a clearance which put the Reds through on goal.
The Raiders again took the lead with a lobbed shot from Robbie catching out the Whickham goalkeeper.
Just before half time the game was level again at 2-2. And that's how it stayed for much of the second half with both teams creating plenty of chances. The next team to score would take the spoils and unfortunately that was to be Whickham with a great solo goal good enough to win any game!
The boys dug in trying to get an equaliser but we're caught short at the back with Whickham sealing the game, hitting on the break and putting the game out of reach at 4-2.
The score could have been a lot higher with both goalkeepers making a string of top quality saves.
Man of the match was given to Jaden for a solid performance at the back.
Whickham chose a joint man of the match of James and Zac for the Raiders.
A great performance from all involved.

Today's game was a repeat fixture of last week's match against Whickham Fellside Warriors.
After last week's win the boys were full of confidence and raring to go. However they were quickly brought back down to earth conceding a goal from the opening attack from Whickham. The Raiders quickly put the set back to one side and got on with the game creating a number of great chances but incredibly none of them finding the back of the net. It looked like we'd be going into half time a goal down but then up stepped Robbie, adding another goal to his seasons tally.
The second half saw Whickham take the lead again with a peach of a shot from distance that nestled into the top of the net with James getting his hands to it but unable to keep it out. Only a minute later Frazer pulled us level again with a near identical goal!
Whickham again took the lead from a corner which caught out Whiteleas who were still setting up to defend the incoming set piece.
The Raiders had plenty of possession and played most of the last 10 minutes in the opponents half but we just couldn't find the space to create another goal.
A thrilling game to say the least and the score not what we'd hoped for but a great performance from both sides on a cold Saturday morning.
Man of the match was awarded to Frazer for his tenacious performance on the right side of midfield.

Our next game had us more evenly matched and up against Whickham Fellside Warriors. After a tough run of games the boys were determined to get back into winning ways.
The Raiders set about the game from the start, pressuring their opponents on and off the ball. Whickham however took the lead in the first half. Not letting the set back distract us, the boys persisted and found the back of the net with Robbie sliding it past the Whickham keeper. However it was quickly ruled out by the referee.
One down at half time but still in good spirits, the second half got off to a great start. Goals from Robbie and Jak saw us take a well deserved lead. The game was on a knife edge until Jak slotted in his second goal of the game! This put the game out of reach for Whickham and the Raiders could finally put an end to a difficult run of games.
The team spirit was always there but this was a reminder of why we live for the game. Two sides evenly matched battling for glory. A well deserved victory for us. Man of the match went to Jak for his superb play and 2 goals.
