This week, South Petherton’s first team got off to an absolute flyer as we arrived and the skipper went ahead and won the toss, which ticked off our first objective of the afternoon. The skipper decided for us to bat on yet another surprisingly hot day at the recreational ground. Openers Sam Palmer and Dom Rowe brought us to the beginning of our innings. Rowe was the first to fall, despite destroying an over for 12 in the early stages. His tape on the bat got him into a pickle as he slapped one straight to mid-wicket. That brought the powerhouse Adam Young into the equation as he didn’t show any sign of slowing down the scoring rate as he raced to 31. During this period, Palmer fell for a steady 19 as the main man Joel Harris entered the game. He earned himself a very impressive 76, which was welcomed with relief and joy to everyone involved, building a score for the boys to protect in the latter hours of the day. After the top four, the lads ticked the runs on and scored at a good rate, with Alex Davy hitting a quick 28 toward the back end of the innings; it seemed as though the boys had made their total ready to defend with the ball.
After putting together a score of 232, the Pethy boys had to make something happen in the field. With the opening batsmen getting off to a great start, the skipper wasn’t best pleased as he demanded more from the team. The skipper pleaded with Pethy to up their game in the field and create an atmosphere in search of a much-needed wicket. Queue Mr Adam ‘Top flight’ Young (1/49), who managed to get the opener to spoon one up for Sam Holder to grab with comfort. Shortly after that, Lucas Young (2/43) came on to bowl following his 4-wicket triumph from the previous week as he swooped in and took the other opener with him. This left 2 new batsmen at the crease. Playing steady didn’t work for the batsmen as the senior Kevin Harris made them frustrated, as he was fuelled with fire after hearing comments about his beloved wicket, eventually teasing the batsman to bring Sam Palmer back into action with a great grab. The lads ploughed on throughout the innings, working as a team to try and limit the opposition, as wickets fell, the team had more chances with a dropped catch and a missed run out opportunity, which was a head in hands moment, Huntspill dragged runs with them, which eventually would lead to them needing 6 off the penultimate over as the opposition skipper saw them over the line. This completed a fantastic ending to the match with the crowd on the edge of their seats! Heading into the final game of the season, we travel over to Curry Rival to face Taunton Indians who are seeking promotion as we look to end this season on a high. All support is much appreciated.
The 2s travelled to Milborne Port this week looking to get a much-awaited win. The skipper managed to win the toss, which meant the boys were going to bat first. After a few early lost wickets for the boys, it brought the returning Ed Clarkson to the crease; he put on a classy knock and a first career 50 for himself, ending the innings on our top score of 69 not out. He received supporting runs from Ryan Wills (29) and some quick late runs from Felix Kollmeier (18*). After what looked like it was going to be a low total after some high-quality batting from seniors and juniors, we ended on 192/9.
With a strong total on the board, the lads were eager to get back out onto the field to try and defend it. After a second-ball wicket from Connor Whiting and young Felix tying down the other end, the boys were optimistic for the rest of the innings. 2 big wickets from Ed Clarkson and Harry Purdy, keeping the run rate low, meant pressure was building on the opposition batsmen. As the innings was coming to an end, the game was getting tight, but the high-quality fielding from the lads meant Milborne Port fell 8 runs short, with a massive result for the boys.
A special mention to all the youngsters who stepped up for the 2s on Saturday; the squad we brought to the game had an average age of 16, and for most of them they’ve only played a handful of senior cricket. A few special mentions: Ed Clarkson with an outstanding knock with a career-high score, Ollie Dore with outstanding work in the field, Felix Kollmeier with a great opening spell and death bowling to deny Milborne from hitting the required runs.
