To mark 100 years of tennis on the grass courts at South Creake, the club organised a costume exhibition tournament on Saturday 17th August.

A high standard of period attire was matched by enthusiastic play. Unfortunately, there was an incident in the second semi-final leading to a heated dispute with the guest umpire, Colonel Kitbag of the Tandoori Rifles. This resulted in all four players being shown the red card and sent off court. Happily, five of the local village urchins, who had been pressganged as ball boys and girls, took up the wooden rackets and white balls and entertained the spectators while the grown-ups cooled off. Eventually peace was restored and the final was played, resulting in a narrow victory for Sebastian and Fran Brunt.

The tournament was a centrepiece of South Creake’s fete to celebrate the Centenary of tennis and bowls on grass in the village. The bowls club also presented a vintage exhibition match using wooden bowls. After the tournaments, visitors were encouraged to have a go at both sports with fun games laid on, and more traditional sports such as Wellie Wanging and Apple Bobbing were also on offer elsewhere on the playing field.

The Club's summer tournament on 20th July attracted an entry of 16 competitive players. Three round robins were followed by a closely-fought final, with Kevin Wick and Debbie Hill-Brookes taking Damian Hill-Brookes and Vanessa Spring to a tie-break. Damian and Vanessa triumphed and were awarded the Wheatley Mixed Doubles Challenge Cup by club chair Cat Knight.

Meanwhile the top four lady runners-up played a doubles final, with Ann Howard (in orange) and Deidre Miller the victors.

Afterwards all made for the Pavilion to enjoy a well-deserved spread of refreshments with Pimms provided by members of the committee.

It's our 100th birthday so we're throwing a party! Help us celebrate 100 years of grass court tennis and the start of our Centenary season. Please let us know in advance if you plan to come.

Goodbye Sara (for now at least!).

At the club's recent AGM, Chair Elect Cat Knight (second from left) praised retiring Chair Sara Freakley for her outstanding service to the club over six years - including two years as Secretary and two as Chair. A vote of thanks was proposed which all members present warmly endorsed.

On behalf of the club the Committee presented Sara with a Certificate of Appreciation awarding her Honorary Life Membership.

Sara and husband Bob are moving out of the area - though not too far away, so we hope to see them back at the club during 2024, our Centenary Year.
