SOUTH BRENT V DARTINGTON
25 July 2026
On another hot dry day skipper Chris Roud in his final game as skipper won the toss and opted to bat first on a very dry wicket.
Skipper Roud and soon to be skipper Joy opened the batting and made a steady start despite the variable bounce. They soon brought up a 50 partnership with Joy getting into his stride and Roud mixing obdurate defence with the occasional ambitious waft. Once the opening bowlers were seen off Joy went into overdrive, helped out a little by ex Brent player Hamish Johnson spilling a number of chances. Joy soon had his 50 with a couple of particularly pleasing cover drives and as drinks approached Brent appeared in complete control at 132-0 before Roud was adjudged lbw on the stroke of drinks. Joy was joined by JJ Bryant who settled in nicely but Joy soon followed Roud back to the pavilion for an entertaining 71. In form Fitzpatrick came and went which brought the elegant Dave Lee to the crease and he reminded us all of what we’ve been missing with a couple of beautiful strokes including a fine 6 over long on. When Lee departed Brent were 189-4 which immediately became 190-5 as club talisman Nick”tubs”Bryant came and went. Wyatt came in to join Bryant jnr and looked to be in good touch. Bryant went for a well made 26 and Brent eventually posted an impressive 223-7 with Wyatt 18*.
Bryant jnr and Bryant snr opened the bowling for Brent and Bryant snr immediately struck to leave Dartington 9-1 and it was soon 15-2 as Bryant jnr struck. He however struggled a little with his line and flirted a little too much with the no ball line so he was withdrawn from the attack while the wily club talisman wheeled away at the other end. On came in form Fitzpatrick and he immediately hit the perfect line and length but Dartington started to build a partnership and the score reached 77 before Bryant snr struck again. Soon it was 93-4 as Fitzpatrick got the wicket he deserved and he soon struck again with a fine caught and bowled to make it 105-5, then it was 118-6 as evergreen Chris O’Hare struck. Dartington skipper Lloyd then departed for a well made 59 adjudged lbw off the bowling of O’Hare again and with Dartington 135-7 Brent were well on their way. There was some l***y hitting down the order from Dartington but Cook, Pittaway, Lee and Bryant jnr held their nerve to see Brent home. 2 great wins in a row for Brent and departing skipper Roud leaves with them out of the relegation zone.
Speaking after the game skipper Roud said “it felt like a good toss to win and 223 felt like a good score on that surface. I was really impressed with Joy’s innings and was pleased we didn’t fall away after the opening stand. Everyone contributed with the ball and in the field and I’m confident the team will stay up although I’m obviously frustrated my season is over. Good luck to the incoming captain Kieran Joy”

SOUTH BRENT v ASHBURTON
18th July 2026
Bottom of the table Brent arrived at table topping Ashburton with low expectations after a dreadful recent run and considerable upheaval behind the scenes. On a hot and humid afternoon skipper Roud won the toss and opted to bat first on a dry pitch.
Openers Havard and Joy were reunited but an excellent opening salvo from Ashburton’s bowlers saw Havard depart to one that kept low and Joy remaining watchful early on. Roud joined Joy and saw the opening pair off before a careless stroke saw him caught behind which brought Fitzpatrick in to join the now swashbuckling Joy. The pair came together at 54-2 and what followed was a blossoming partnership initially dominated by Joy but increasingly contributed to by Fitzpatrick. Joy eventually departed for an excellently compiled 92 after the pair had added exactly 100 to move the score to 154-3. Fitzpatrick was then joined by club talisman Nick”tubs”Bryant who played some pleasing nurdles as he saw Fitzpatrick through to his 50. Once Fitzpatrick reached 50 he went into overdrive hitting 4 consecutive boundaries before eventually departing for 71. JJ Bryant and Wyatt saw the innings out with Bryant finding a couple of impressive boundaries and Wyatt running willingly to see Brent to a competitive 231/5.
Bryant jnr and O’Hare opened the bowling for Brent and it wasn’t long before Bryant produced an inswinging Jaffa for the first wicket and with O’Hare bowling superbly at the other end Bryant soon struck again to make it 22-2. Bryant snr came on and kept things tight but as Ashburton started to threaten Roud turned to club legend Havard who struck with his first ball to make it 105-3. Fitzpatrick was causing trouble at one end while Havard got into his work at the other, both striking in quick succession to make it 130-3 then 131-4. Havard eventually finished with 4-31 off his 8 overs as Brent chipped away and the required rate crept up. Bryant snr came back to mop up the tail and Brent had a famous victory with Ashburton all out for 194.
Speaking after the game skipper Roud said “I’ve known for some time there was a good performance in us and I can’t fault anyone today. Joy and Fitzpatrick were magnificent with the bat and everybody contributed in the field while Havard in particular was great with the ball. Hopefully we can build on this and begin to climb the table.”
Next Saturday Brent are at home to Dartington.

2 weeks of turmoil at Brent have seen the chairman step down and the captain set out a timetable for his departure. Brent return to the field today looking to upset the odds and turn over high flying Ashburton.
Skipper Roud says “it’s been a tough couple of weeks but hopefully the guys can relax and play with a smile on their face knowing change is afoot.”

Game day for Brent and they welcome back Kidney, Pittaway and Fitzpatrick while there’s a long awaited debut for Heimann.
Skipper Roud said “we’ve been on the wrong end of a couple of results recently so a few fresh faces will hopefully add some energy. We’re looking forward to playing on what is generally a very good batting track.”

SOUTH BRENT V KINGSBRIDGE 27th June 2026
Brent arrived at Kingsbridge looking to regroup after a couple of harrowing losses. Skipper Roud lost the toss and Kingsbridge chose to bat first on a good looking track.
JJ Bryant and Dave Lewis opened the bowling but Kingsbridge got off to something of a flyer as Roud appeared to have his bowlers operating from the wrong ends. Needing to make a change with Kingsbridge 41-0 in no time Roud turned to record wicket taker Cook and club talisman Nick”tubs”Bryant. Bryant immediately dried the runs up and had the batters in all sorts of trouble soon removing the dangerous Chandler to make it 41-1 while Cook struck twice making it 53-2 then 53-3. After a mini recovery tubs was back in the wickets to make it 79-4 then 85-5 courtesy of a comical stumping by wicket keeper Wyatt. Bryant finishing with excellent figures of 3/18 off his 8 overs. Nick Roud on loan from Cheriton Fitzpaine bowled 5 tidy overs and Lewis returned with more rhythm from the other end. With things in the balance skipper Roud turned back to Bryant jnr and he showed what he was about with a lively spell taking 3 wickets to confirm the Bryant household provided a double threat. Evergreen Chris O’Hare initially struggled to find his length but soon picked up a wicket which left Kingsbridge 128-9 and seemingly well short of a competitive total but with both the Bryant’s and Lewis bowled out Roud joined O’Hare to finish the innings and despite a promising first over that went for just a single some poor fielding, particularly an awful dropped catch from Roud and a poor last over also from Roud meant Kingsbridge took 25 runs off the last 8 balls of their innings and finished with a competitive 175-9.
Brent had a new opening pair in Down and Wyatt but Down was soon gone for a duck shortly followed by Wyatt for 4. Club legend Lewis who was stroking the ball beautifully was joined by Nick Roud and Brent were looking good until Roud was controversially adjudged lbw making it 62-3. Nick Bryant joined Lewis but also appeared to get the wrong end of the benefit as he too went lbw reducing Brent to 68-4. JJ Bryant joined Lewis who soon completed his 50 and Brent once again looked in control until Bryant was run out by a direct hit attempting a second and Brent were 113-5 before Bowden perished for a duck to make it 113-6. In came skipper Roud to join Lewis and things seemed to be back under control until Lewis ran past one and was stumped to leave Brent 121-7, Howells came and went to make it 127-8 and when Roud went with the score on 134-9 the writing was on the wall. Despite some pleasing strokes from Cook and some enthusiastic swinging from O’Hare Brent were all out for 146 and left to ponder what might have been.
Speaking after the game skipper Roud said “unfortunately this one’s on me, I dropped a crucial catch, bowled a poor final over and failed to bring it home with the bat. I’m not afraid to make changes and no one is beyond dropping including myself. That said it was really encouraging to see both the Bryant’s back in form and another excellent knock from Lewis.”
Brent are on the road again next Saturday with a trip to Brixham

SOUTH BRENT v KINGSBRIDGE
28th June 2026

Brent ring the changes ….
Ahead of today’s visit to Kingsbridge and on the back of 2 disappointing performances South Brent have rung the changes in a bid to turn their form around. Nick Roud comes in on loan from Cheriton Fitzpaine, Mick”tusky”Howells gets an opportunity, W***y Wyatt returns behind the stumps and the ever reliable Chris O’Hare returns.
Skipper Chris Roud said after a couple of tough weeks he’s looking forward to welcoming some fresh faces and expecting a reaction from his team.
Your match report correspondent has missed the last couple of weeks but rest assured there will be a report tomorrow regardless of result.

GAME DAY 13th June 2026

It’s game day for South Brent, a local derby away to Ivybridge 3’s. Some tough selection decisions this week with 9 potential first teamers away. Skipper Roud said he’s delighted to welcome back Josh Fitzpatrick and he’s hoping his team can build on their epic one run victory over Babbacombe. Roud said “the pressure’s on the eleven of us to produce today as club talisman Nick”tubs”Bryant didn’t make the cut. To be able to leave such a totemic figure out shows how far we’ve come as a club.

SOUTH BRENT v BABBACOMBE 30 May 2026
After 2 chastening defeats Brent rocked up at Babbacombe hoping to stop the rot. Roud won the toss and opted to bat on a good looking pitch and Joy and Wyatt got Brent off to a flyer, Wyatt departing in the 5th over with the score already on 36. Enter Dave Lewis who having missed a couple of games was in no mood to hang around. As Joy took a back seat Lewis smashed 5 4’s and 2 enormous 6’s including one that bounced in the road and disappeared in the direction of Teignmouth. He perished showing the same intent to a fine catch on the boundary for a quick fire 43, leaving Brent 104/2. Unfortunately Joy soon followed and the unfortunate Malpas was adjudged lbw first ball. Meanwhile Down was settling in at the other end and Stubbs came in and played some l***y blows before he departed for a breezy 26. Down continued to hold the innings together as skipper Roud came and went to another lbw and some useful contributions from club talisman Bryant and founding father Cook saw Brent to 197 all out.
Stubbs and Lewis opened the bowling for Brent with Stubbs booking in on an excellent line and length and Lewis bowling at a lively pace but occasionally too short. Babbacombe were going well but never really getting ahead of the run rate. Lewis was replaced by Cook who probed away with no luck and Stubbs had no luck as he completed his 8 overs wicket less for a miserly 26 runs. On came evergreen O’Hare and although he was a little wayward in his first spell he found a good one to get the breakthrough and break a century opening stand. Brent were looking second favourites so skipper Roud turned to debutant Dowler who showed excellent flight and guile and courtesy of a magnificent running diving and sliding catch by Lewis soon struck. He was at it again shortly afterwards as Cook took an excellent catch above his head and Babbacombe were 146/3. Club talisman Bryant came on and despite numerous injuries some of which were to limbs none of us had ever heard of he kept the pressure on. Babbacombe looked to have weathered the storm so in a final throw of the dice Roud threw the ball to club legend Dave Lewis. He was soon into his work picking up 2 wickets with the score now on 173/5 and the potential to get interesting, then came a dramatic over which reminded your correspondent of Flintoff in 2005. Lewis struck 3 more times in this incredible over to complete his 5 wicket haul and have Brent dreaming. O’Hare came back and found a much better line and length and in a surprise move Roud brought himself on to bowl some loopy guff in a pressure situation. O’Hare struck to make it 194/9 and in a dramatic finish Roud conjured up images of a blind pig finding an acorn as he took the final wicket to see Brent win an epic encounter by just 1 run.
Speaking after the game skipper Roud said he was proud of every one of the 11 and he was especially delighted for Dowler on debut.
Next week it’s Paignton 4’s at home.

SOUTH BRENT v DARTINGTON AND TOTNES
23 May 2026
Brent arrived at Dartington in good spirits as the sun shone and skipper Roud won the toss and put Dartington in on a surprisingly green track.
Stubbs and Bryant opened the bowling and while Bryant soon found some swing and settled into a good rhythm Stubbs couldn’t find his length. Dartington got off to a bit of a flyer before Roud turned to Mr reliable Havard who quickly struck leaving Dartington 44-1. Veteran wicket keeper Paul Taylor came in at number 3 for D & T but was soon run out after a cunningly slow chase by Wyatt convinced him there was a second run, 54-2. It was then a long wait for a third wicket as some wayward bowling and sloppy fielding allowed D&T to accelerate and they reached 185 before the 3rd wicket fell to record wicket taker Cook. Brent fought back well at the end with Havard picking up 4 wickets and Kidney impressing in his second spell. D&T eventually posting 215/8 when they had looked set to pass 250.
Openers Havard and Joy were reunited and Brent were expecting great things but sadly Joy was soon on his way back for a duck. Down joined Havard and they both looked in good touch with Down in particular playing some sumptuous strokes. Sadly though it wasn’t to last as Down went to make it 22/2 shortly followed by Havard 30/3 and Wyatt 30/4. Stubbs and Roud briefly looked like they might launch a counterattack but Stubbs chased a wide one and holed out. Bowden came and went and when Roud followed with the score on 66/7 the writing was on the wall. Pittaway played a couple of pleasing strokes and some fine strokes from Kidney showed what might have been but Brent were all out for 115 and soundly beaten for the second week running.
After the game skipper Roud said it was a disappointing performance and he would be reflecting on what he could do better before next week’s fixture away to Babbacombe.
