119/8 v 123/4 – Stingers suffer their first loss in a long time

The Stingers fell to a narrow defeat against Binfield yesterday, losing by four runs in a well-contested match played in great spirit throughout. As always, it was an enjoyable fixture against familiar opponents, with both sides competing well.

Binfield posted 123/4, anchored by a composed innings from Jackson, who carried the bat for 64*. The Stingers kept themselves in the game with disciplined spells and regular breakthroughs, with wickets shared between Michaela, Gee, Grace and Kira, leaving a manageable target of 124.

In reply, Rita gave the chase a strong foundation with 55 opening the batting. However, despite that start, the innings never fully settled. A combination of missed opportunities, accurate straight bowling and changes of pace made run-scoring difficult at key moments, and as wickets fell the required rate began to creep up. The Stingers closed on 119/8, falling just short of the target.

While there were one or two decisions that did not go our way, the outcome reflects the need to be more clinical in converting chances and maximising scoring opportunities.

Attention now turns to Super 8s finals day, with a clear focus on improving run accumulation and capitalising on key periods of play.

Match report from the Stinger's game against Wokingham on Sunday:

Great start to the season – HCWCL Division 3a – Sonning Stingers

After a very soggy Saturday, the Stingers were able to get play on Sunday at our second ground, Knowl Hill. Conditions were far from ideal: a clarty outfield and a sticky wicket meant runs were hard-earned for both sides. Winning the toss, Wokingham chose to field first and Sonning posted a competitive 128/5.

Rita Green led the way with an excellent 49 (just one short of a well-deserved half-century), supported by a solid 40 from Sophie Parker to give Sonning a steady platform. Extras played a big part too, finishing as Sonning’s third-highest “scorer” with 27. Wokingham’s captain was the pick of their attack, as Keeper, claiming 3 wickets. The track didn’t offer much help to batters—balls stayed low with little bounce, and the heavy, slow outfield kept boundaries to a minimum.

In reply, Sonning took a little time to adjust to the ground and slope (and to not being on the track at KGF), but soon found their rhythm. Credit to Wokingham’s promising young batters Iris and Pari, who faced the lion’s share of the deliveries and made 24 and 17 respectively with great determination.

Once the bowlers settled, Sonning produced a strong all-round display: a standout 5/8 from Sophie Smith, 2/11 from Belle Myers, and a wicket apiece for Rita Green and captain Katie Barrows. Add in a confident catch from Hannah Brooks, and Wokingham were bowled out for 81 (with extras again proving the top contributor).

A brilliant start to the season and a really solid team performance in unusual conditions—especially after the weather we’ve had lately (who expected muddy trousers this early?).

A big thank you to James Robertson for umpiring what was also a landmark game for Wokingham: their first time playing a women’s XI in 10 years. They were a lovely side to play against—we look forward to meeting them again, and wish them the very best for the season ahead.

A tribute to David Phillips 1956 – 2026

Sonning Cricket Club are very sad to announce the passing of David Phillips on Tuesday 2nd June.

The eldest son of former club stalwarts David ‘DG’ and Valerie Phillips, David (or ‘Young’ Dave as he was referred to) first played for Sonning Cricket Club in the mid 1970’s. At that time the Club were playing in the East Berks League and one of the earliest recordings of ‘Young’ Dave’s long association with the Club was depicted in a cartoon article for the Reading Evening Post. The cartoon features the East Berks League fixture against Mapledurham in which Dave scored an undefeated 50 as well as sharing a match winning partnership of 72 with his dad ‘DG’.

This pretty much marks the beginning of 50 years’ association with the Club as a player, captain and supporter. Dave was a talented left handed batter who, as a youngster, played for Berkshire Schools and very quickly made his mark in senior league cricket which, at that time, was in it’s formative years. Invariably opening the batting Dave featured regularly in the 1st XI that won a hat-trick of Berkshire Premier League titles between 1978 and 1980, a golden time for the Club. Dave continued playing through the 1980’s and in to the 1990’s, skippering the 1st XI for 2 seasons in 1992 and 1993.

It was during the 1990’s, when the Club’s fortunes dipped, that Dave’s commitment to Sonning CC was most critical and, in combination with DG and younger brother Gary, they stepped up to help keep the Club afloat during that difficult time.

Dave was always a committed and invaluable tourist back in the 1970’s and 80’s, firstly to Devon and then on tours to Somerset. A reliable run getter (even when in recovery from the night before!), tales and anecdotes from those trips live long in the memory and have been fondly recounted down the years over a few beers in the Pavilion by Dave and his fellow tourists!

Dave hung up his bat far too young in the eyes of many but he remained a committed supporter of the Club, initially enjoying watching his son Paul playing for the club. In more recent years he had been able to follow the fortunes of his nieces Charley and Ella as they have progressed through the ranks at Sonning to secure professional contracts with Nottinghamshire and Northants respectively as well as Grace’s performances for our ladies team ‘The Stingers’. Spectating as recently as last summer, he was even being served a pint at the bar by his loving and loyal partner Ann Marie – safe to say Dave’s legacy at Sonning CC is safe and secure.

But it is on the field, playing cricket, where Dave will be best remembered. Never phased by the quality or speed of the opposition bowling, the abiding images of his flourishing off drives to anything slightly over pitched, or a pull to the leg side to anything dropped a bit short will remain long in the memory of all those who had the pleasure of playing with, and watching, ‘Young’ Dave in full flow.

Match report from the Stinger's games on Sunday:

Sonning Stingers Seal Top Spot and Book Super 8s Finals Place

Sonning Stingers have stormed to the top of Group 4—unbeaten across the full five-week tournament—to secure their place in the Home Counties Women’s Cricket League Super 8s regional finals.

The final takes place on 21 June, hosted by Sulhamstead, and with maximum points on the board the Stingers are well placed for a direct route into the semi-finals.

Sunday showdown vs Crowthorne

Facing Crowthorne on Sunday, Sonning made a strong statement in the first game, winning convincingly with 117/2 against 66/5. Despite Crowthorne’s availability challenges—and a loan player who proved to be their top run-scorer across both matches—Sonning’s bowling and fielding stayed sharp throughout. Sophie Parker starred with two wickets and a run out, while Kira Knight and Belle Myers chipped in with a wicket apiece to keep Crowthorne pinned back.

The second game was a far tighter contest, with Sonning edging it on totals: 278/6 to 264/4. A special mention goes to De Bromhead (on loan from Emmbrook), who blasted 27 from 13 balls, sending the ball to all parts. While Sonning did lose six wickets—caught out by the loopy ball at times—the scoreboard doesn’t fully reflect the all-round effort and energy they put in on the field. Boundaries found by Elinor Longridge, Rits Rana and Sophie Parker. The wickets taken by Belle Myers, Grace Phillips, Katie Barrows and Hannah Brooks.

What’s next

All eyes now turn to the final on 21 June, but there’s no time to coast: the Stingers’ promotion push begins on Sunday 6 June, when the First XI open their Division 3 campaign against Wokingham.

Thanks must also go to the officials and leadership across the Super 8s tournament—umpires James Robertson and Andrew Herrett for keeping play running smoothly, on-field captains Katie Barrows and Michaela Herrett for their calm direction throughout, and Women’s Captain (and ever-reliable scorer) Sharon Fleming for keeping everything organised on and off the pitch.
