Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is push.
Other times, the strongest thing you can do is pull back.
The key is knowing the difference.
Right now, pregnancy has taught me that this is a season where my body needs something different from me. Instead of chasing PBs or constantly asking, “What’s next?”, I’m learning to slow down, recover and give myself permission to simply show up as consistently as I can.
If you know me, you’ll know that’s not easy.
I’m still getting my daily steps in, training three times a week, aiming to hit my protein target and prioritising the habits that make me feel good.
But I’m also listening.
This isn’t about making excuses.
There’s a huge difference between making a decision because your priorities or circumstances have changed and making an excuse because you’re avoiding the work.
When I was in prep or in a fat loss phase chasing a specific goal, I knew exactly what was required. Tracking was part of the process. Cardio was non-negotiable. Training intensity mattered. Structure was essential because that was the level of commitment needed to achieve the result I wanted.
The same applies to any fat loss journey. There will be periods where you need to be more disciplined, track your food, gather data and accept that it won’t always feel easy. That’s often the price of achieving a goal that truly matters to you.
But fitness isn’t just about knowing when to push.
It’s also about recognising when life calls for a different approach.
Sometimes progress looks like flexibility.
Sometimes it looks like recovery.
Sometimes it looks like protecting your energy so you can continue showing up for the long term.
Neither approach is wrong they’re just appropriate for different seasons of life.
If you’re working towards a specific goal, be honest about the level of effort it requires and commit to it fully.
But if you’re in a season where slowing down is the right decision, don’t confuse that with failure.
Know the difference between an excuse and a decision.
One avoids growth.
The other supports it.
