WHO REALLY GETS ANXIOUS OR DEPRESSED?
When we hear the words anxiety or depression, it can be easy to think this only happens to other people who are struggling, or those who have been diagnosed by a GP. The truth is that everyone experiences anxiety or depression at some point in their life, because it is a natural part of our human emotions. (e.g. we are not always happy, we are not always sad, but a mixture of many varied emotions in daily life)
Anxiety or depression only becomes a problem if it prevents someone from doing things they want to do, or they feel undervalued or incapable of dealing with a problem in life themselves. It also is a problem if anxiety or depression carries on after a situation that caused it has stopped or changed.
I'm sharing this because this is something I have experienced personally, as well as seen it play out in many people, young or old, and from all walks of life long before I became a counsellor, as well as during many hours of working with people going through this in counselling. The trick is to understand how it works in our body (nervous system), mind and emotions, as well as what is the underlying cause of it (it surprises some people where it comes from!)
When you no longer feel in the dark about anxiety or depression, it makes it feel more manageable, and then the realisation of your inner strength can begin. After that point, there can be no stopping you!
