Fished at Peatling Pools today on a club match. Drew peg 11 on Silvers Pool. There were only 8 on the match so plenty of room being on an end peg.

At the all in the fish were showing themselves high in the water close in the edges so I tried shallow with maggot, pushing the rig tight to the bank.

At the all out I weighed 198lbs for the win. 2nd weighed 109lbs.

Fished the Easter Sunday open at Tunnel Barn Farm with Andy Walker. Top, House and Club were in. Drew peg 1 on Club which looked like it would fish well with the wind coming in. Andy drew peg 1 on Top.

I fished meat short over several lines to weigh 97lbs 7oz for 2nd on the pool and 5th overall. Rich Kings beat me with 112lb 4oz from peg 3. Andy finished 6th on his lake.

At least we both won our sections and I also came second by default in the super pool.

4th overall

Fished the Thursday open at Map Marston fields fishery today. Drew peg 22 on Oak. The match was split across lakes Elm and Oak with 15 fishing.

Both sides of the pool were in so there was no option to Chuck across. I had one on the maggot feeder from the middle, one on corn on a short line and the rest from the left edge on maggots.

Weighed in 52lb for 3rd on the pool and 4th overall.

Section Win

Visited Map Marston fields fishery today to fish the Wednesday Open for my first ever visit. I drew peg 16 on Oak, a lake that hasn’t been fished in matches before. The match was split across lakes Elm and Oak with 16 fishing.

I set up everything to be fair as I wasn’t too sure how the pool would fish but guessed the maggot feeder would be a good start as it does well on the other pools.

I spent the first 2 hours without a sign. Most of my time was spent on the feeder but did try the pole lines without any bites. My first fish came on the maggot feeder from about 3/4 quarters across. A nice looking 6lb mirror was welcomed. I then spent another hour or so searching the far side, edging closer to the bank before I caught my 2nd fish, a similar sized carp. Another came but on pellets on the method.

In the last hour, the area where I had been chucking the maggot feeder seemed to switch on, either that or the fish had moved down pool.

I finished with 26lb 12oz to win my section and finish 3rd on Oak pool. Nice to get some money for a decent days fishing.

I will definitely be going back in the near future to fish the opens again. It’s a lovely venue and the fish were immaculate. The owners were very welcoming and good to share info on the pools. Also the grub from the cafe was spot on.

I used my 10ft Free Spirit CTX feeder rod, with the 1oz tip. Shimano Aero BB 4000 reel with 8lb Drennan mainline, a 20g Drennan maggot feeder and a pre-tide Guru 12” hook length of 0.16 to to size 16 hook.

MATCH WIN

Fished a club match at Lower Park Fisheries on the Pebble Pool on 10th Feb with WMP Maver.

The match was split over two pools; Pebble and Highland.

I’ve drawn peg 17 on Pebble Pool. I can’t say that knew anything about the peg other than it has a good head of silvers so my plan of attack was to catch anything and everything.

It was a cold day, around 3 Celsius to begin with but by midday it had risen to 8. The pools were frozen over so I broke out a 16m area. It was an overcast day with a light SW breeze.

I set up two Pole rigs. A maggot line in 5ft of water which was good for my 2+2 line and all the way out to 16m should I need to chase the fish out. I also set up a margin rig in 3.5ft which doubled up as a dobbing rig. I also set up a a maggot feeder for the when the ice fully cleared. For bait I had live and dead red maggots, 4mm expanders, F1 dark groundbait and some left over 2mms.

At the all in, I caught a nice sized roach followed by a 1lb perch almost straight away on my 2+2 line with a single dead red on the hook and feeding about 8 maggots each time. I stayed on this line catching small fish and eventually caught a few F1’s to 3lb.

The bites were finicky so I had to dot the float right down so it was just visible. I remained on this line for about 2 hours until I stopped getting indications and so pushed out about a metre and the bites came good again. I repeated this until the last 1 hour and eventually chucked a light maggot feeder about 20m in front to a pipe. From there I caught 3 further F1’s but that soon went quiet. I finished at 13m on maggots to end the match with 38lb 12oz to take the win on Pebble pool and come 1st overall.

2nd weighed 28lb from peg 8 and 3rd weighed 24lb from peg 12.

The rig used was a 0.4G DS XL Carbon Slim, on 0.15 Preston Power to a pre-tied Drennan Maggot 6“ hook length of 0.13 size 18 hook.

I have five big qualifier matches booked in for this year. 🏆

It’ll be the first year to have a go at these so I’ve tried to keep them to the venues I know to hopefully do okay.

Wish me luck 🤞🏻

MATCH WIN

Went back to Alvechurch Fisheries to fish the open on the Colmic Canal pool today. Wanted to see if the weight from my last match there was a fluke.

So I’ve drawn peg 24, again. It was an unbelievable draw given that I won my last match from the same peg. Only difference is that I was fishing against the venue regulars.

I’ve got to my peg and plumbed up 2 two dobbing rigs and a maggot line in 5.5ft. I wanted to keep it simple so had only maggots and bread on the side tray.

So the match went very well. I’ve had to search the peg for bites but found a ball of fish to my far left. The truth is I copied Lee Davis on the peg next to me and I’ve caught steady from there for a while until the fish moved to my right and into the next peg. At the all out I’ve weight 206lb 13oz which won me the match.

2nd was Lee Davis with 140lb on peg 26

Best rig for dobbing was a 0.4g Guru Wilkinson float on 0.17 mainline to 6” hook length of 0.15 to a size 16 Drennan Maggot hook.
