🏇 POSSIBLE SHOWDOWN WITH THE MALES

Plans have changed for Nitrogen, with the leading American filly set to skip the G2 Locust Grove Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Mark Casse cited concerns over the expected extreme heat in Louisville and the conditions surrounding her transportation. Nitrogen will instead head to Belmont Park, with several major targets now under consideration.

Most intriguing is the possibility of taking on the males in the $1 million G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup on September 18. The G2 Beldame Stakes and G1 Spinster Stakes are also among her options.

If connections choose the Gold Cup route, it would represent a fascinating new challenge for one of America’s leading fillies.

Would you like to see Nitrogen take on the males at Group 1 level?

CONSTITUTION HILL BEATEN AT KEMPTON - MELBOURNE CUP AMBITION HITS A ROADBLOCK

The remarkable Flat experiment with Constitution Hill has encountered a major obstacle after the former Champion Hurdle star finished fourth in today’s Group 3 September Stakes at Kempton.

Pride Of Arras took the victory, while Constitution Hill could manage only fourth — crucially missing the top-three finish required to satisfy the qualifying criteria for the Melbourne Cup through this race.

The result leaves serious questions over the next step for one of the most celebrated National Hunt horses of his generation and his ambitious switch to the Flat.

From Champion Hurdle glory to a Melbourne Cup dream, it was always going to be an extraordinary challenge. Today, that journey became considerably more complicated.

What should connections do next, continue the Flat campaign or return Constitution Hill to jumping?

Rocket Boy finished second, but First Law was firmly in command at the finish, another promising young talent emerging from the Godolphin operation.

SOVEREIGNTY SETBACK — GOLD CUP PARTICIPATION IN DOUBT

Reigning U.S. Horse of the Year Sovereignty has suffered a setback after developing an abscess in a hind foot, forcing him to miss his scheduled weekend workout.

Trainer Bill Mott confirmed that the issue has interrupted Sovereignty’s preparation, placing his participation in the upcoming Gold Cup in doubt.

The situation will now depend on how quickly the foot responds to treatment and whether Sovereignty can return to training in time.

A significant development surrounding one of the biggest names in American racing, and one TheWinningPost will continue to follow.

🩵 ROMANTIC WARRIOR RETIRES

One of the greatest international racehorses of the modern era has run his final race.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced that Romantic Warrior’s connections, after consultation with Club veterinarians, have decided to retire the eight-year-old following further diagnostic imaging and assessment of his front leg.

Trained by Danny Shum for owner Peter Lau, the Hong Kong champion retires with an extraordinary record:

🏆 24 victories from 31 starts
⭐ 15 Group 1 triumphs
💰 HK$288,745,697 in prize money
🌍 Major victories across Hong Kong, Australia, Japan and Dubai

His remarkable achievements included a record four Hong Kong Cups, four QEII Cups, the 2023 Cox Plate, the 2024 Yasuda Kinen and the 2025 Jebel Hatta. He also completed the Hong Kong Triple Crown during his unbeaten final season.

Romantic Warrior will remain at Conghua Racecourse for the next three months under veterinary supervision before moving to his retirement home through the HKJC’s RESTART Racehorse Aftercare Programme.

A farewell ceremony will be held at Sha Tin later this season—an appropriate goodbye for a horse whose courage, consistency and international achievements made him a true global superstar.

Happy retirement, Romantic Warrior. Racing will not forget you. 🩵

For some, this is preparation. For others, it is the final chance to prove they belong on Europe’s greatest stage.

The road to the Arc is entering its decisive phase. Who will emerge as the horse to follow?

RACING ABANDONED TWICE

Serious safety concerns disrupted Bellewstown on 25–26 August, with racing abandoned on two consecutive days after horses repeatedly lost their footing around a section of the track.

Despite inspection and remedial work before racing resumed on the second day, another horse slipped and officials again called a halt to proceedings.

Bellewstown and the IHRB subsequently brought in an agronomist to investigate the affected area and establish the cause.

A stark reminder that horse and rider safety must always come first.
