🏏 TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT | PRESIDENT’S XI 🏏

It’s time for one of our favourite end-of-season traditions!

Each year, our President Sir George Cave puts together his very own President’s XI to take on Sidbury CC, and this year is no different!

We’re looking forward to another great afternoon of cricket, with the game getting underway tomorrow at 1pm at The Millfield. 🌳🏏

We’d love to see lots of you down at the ground to support us, enjoy some cricket and help us round off the season in style!

🏏 MATCH REPORT | Sidbury CC vs Feniton CC

Sidbury finish the league season with a 7-wicket victory over Feniton

A fantastic way to round off the league campaign at The Millfield, as Sidbury chased down Feniton’s 148/6 with three wickets down, reaching 149/3 in just 26 overs.

After the toss Feniton headed into bat, the Sidbury bowlers kept things under control throughout. Ed Chester led the way with wickets with an excellent 3/19 from 5 overs, while Alex Paget picked up 1/8 from his 7 overs and Simon Rowe claimed 1/19. Feniton’s Nigel Blackmore top-scored with an unbeaten 38, with Alfie Gibbins adding a quick 32 from 18 balls.

In reply, Sidbury got off to a steady start before Simon Rowe took control of the chase, finishing unbeaten on a superb 58 from 60 balls. He was well supported by Jonathan Whitfield (27) and Alex Paget (25) as Sidbury reached the target with few overs to spare. Feniton’s Francis Perryman was their pick of the bowlers with 2/33.

The victory brings the curtain down on a brilliant 2026 Devon Cricket League E Division East campaign, with Sidbury finishing 3rd in the table with 232 points from 18 games, including 9 victories. 🥉

A massive thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout the season — players, supporters, scorers, umpires, teas, grounds team and everyone behind the scenes. ❤️

🏏 THE DENTIST’S DECANTER IS BACK! 🍻

Today marks the 9th year of our annual tournament in memory of Sidbury Cricket Club legend Chris Bishop — a former player, groundsman, secretary, scorer, fixture secretary and, quite simply, one of the biggest reasons the club exists today.

Three sides will battle it out in 10-over matches:
🔴 The Boffins – longstanding tourists & friends of the club
⚪ Bish’s All Stars – Sidbury players past & present
🔴 Old Sid Brocks – Old Brocks tourists with a sprinkling of Sidmouth CC

There’ll be a bar, BBQ and raffle for the famous Barrow of Booze all day. 🍺🍔

🌧️ The weather might have other ideas, but fingers crossed the rain stays away and we can squeeze some cricket in!

After a brilliant crowd last year, we’re hoping to see another great turnout today. Whether you knew Chris, have played for Sidbury, live locally or just fancy a Sunday pint and a burger — everyone is welcome.

Come down, enjoy the day and help us raise funds for the club in Chris’ memory.

A fantastic 28-run victory for Sidbury CC away at Clyst St George!

Batting first, Sidbury posted 246/10 from 45 overs, with Simon Rowe (56), Alex Paget (52) and Billy Collin (42) leading the way with the bat.

In reply, Clyst St George battled hard but were restricted to 218/9, with Soren Hall taking 3, Ed Chester and Damien Armes claiming 2 wickets each, Simon Rowe taking 1 and a good run out from Alex Paget to round off our wickets

A strong all-round performance to secure the win! 💪🏏

15th August 2026. Chardstock v Sidbury

It was tempting to lose oneself to sentimentality as the guilty sun finally melted into the hill front and West of Chardstock’s cricket ground after a day’s play. Michael Atherton certainly ladled on the nostalgia in his piece in The Times* in the lead up to our cricketing Saturday and so the cynics amongst us hardened our hearts to tales of homemade lemonade, rusty old rollers and the unchanging hills of Devon and made the trip out to this most eastern outpost of Devon league cricket to see who’d score more runs, us or them.
There was some doubt the game would go ahead at all of course. Our newly coronated Nanny had sent out a fearsome alarm siren just hours earlier. Some made for the hills, others to the cracked earth where our reservoirs used to be** and Cricky’s unprecedented absence has yet to be explained but 11 of us ceased from running circles in wild-haired, mud-streaked confusion to pitch up dressed and in good time.
Everyone had a look at the wicket – hard, dry, some beak holes – before skipper Ed Chester decided we’d do what we always do when it’s hot and the coin is friendly: bat. Out went the returning Jon Whitfield and the (unusually) continuing Ryan Trawford to open the innings. Cutting a medium story short, most of us chipped it about a bit and then came back in but there was one notable, and mostly chanceless, partnership between Syam Manakkad (39) and Damien Armes (24) who topped ‘n’ tailed for 69 runs which hauled us from the depths of 67 for 5 towards a bashfully proud 180 all out in 43.4.
After a season’s hiatus, Chardstock have resumed their provision of a cricket tea and I’m happy to report it’s as good as it ever was. The highlights here were deliciously moist ham Caesar salad sandwiches, individual flans, lemon drizzle cupcakes and, of course, the loyal scone.*** Bowlers tried and failed to be abstemious, batters did not try.
Our games with Chardstock usually pivot upon the amount of time Rob (Bobby to soppy Athers) Hutchings spends at the crease and this was the archetype. Chardstock’s top order were brushed aside like unwanted amuse-bouches as Sidbury’s bowlers demanded the Chateaubriand immédiatement. It arrived on its silver platter at 21 for 4 and was left to rest in the very able company of James Hayden as the score climbed rapidly to 111. The home side were strong favourites by now but then Simon Rowe started spinning the ball up the hill. Hayden (23) fell to a sharp stumping by Lewis Hodder and then the coup de grâce as Hutchings (67) faintly nicked through to Hodder who went up like a firework. Rowe barely appealed and the umpire shook her head before Hutchings honourably walked. The target was still within reach but Rowe ran through to his 5-fer, and man of the match Hodder to 5 victims (fully 3 out of 4 catches standing up to the stumps) as Chardstock fell 16 runs short.
We will miss our trip to relegated Chardstock greatly next year. The pitch is on a huge slope and it is merely village cricket which is played there but Athers was right; there is something about the place and the way the club is run which echoes through the ages and reminds us all of the simpler times from which our nostalgia springs. As the sun set and we sipped our cider the groundsman of 60 years tidied the pitch and set up the sprinkler, backed by the still-green hills and trees of lovely Devon. We hope they’ll be back in 2028 and there’s talk of a friendly in the interim.
