For some riders, MOTM is just the latest of numerous long rides through Wales, but for Jake Cullen it was likely the first of many.

Having moved to Bristol earlier this year, Jake has had Wales on his radar from the outset. But rather than begin with a day ride across the Severn Bridge, he threw himself in at the deep end with a 700km lap of the country.

Less than a week until MOTM26 gets under way. With another heatwave building, it's looking likely to be the driest and dustiest edition on record.

This changing British climate brings with it new challenges and unfamiliar risks. For the first time ever, we will be monitoring wildfire reports and have encouraged riders to do the same.

However, as dry as Wales might be right now, we still challenge any rider to finish with dry feet.

*Looking for a commentator*

MOTM26 is now just over a couple of weeks away. We're excited to watch a fresh bunch of riders take on this beautiful and bumpy loop around Wales.

If you want to be a part of the adventure without getting your feet wet (literally in some places on the route) then we're looking for a volunteer to take on the .cc commentary. If you're interested in this then please drop us a message.

Equally, if you've left it late but would still like to sign up to ride, we have a few spots left. Entries will close on Sunday evening.

Last weekend, recced sections of the MOTM route, including the crossing of Hay Bluff - the final climb on the route. This section has always been tricky, as the bridleway diverts from the Offa's D**e path close to the top, disappearing into a maze of sheep tracks.

The aim of re-riding this was to try and produce a GPX track that matches the ever-changing trails more closely for this tricky section. The verdict is out on whether that was a success; the advice remains don't drift left and you'll eventually find your way through.

However, tackling this beautiful traverse certainly reinforced its positioning as a literal and metaphorical high point on the route. In daylight, the views are some of the best in southern Wales, with the landscape falling away below you. And it remains surprisingly rideable with good legs.

Of course, with tired legs and in pitch black, your verdict on this section might be quite different. But isn't that the same with any section of an off road ultra?

The sun is out and the trails are drying. Even the bogs of Wales may lose some of their squelch over the next few days of heat.

MOTM26 is less than two months away now. We're already looking forward to escaping to the quiet valleys and remote hilltops.

Looking for your next challenge?

Memories of WWC26 are starting to fade now, with bikes and bodies recovered from the effort. If that ultra itch is already back and needs scratching, MOTM26 still has spaces.

Over 700 kilometres of mixed surface riding through the heart of Wales - with a few hills along the way - the route takes riders from the Black Mountains to Eryri (Snowdonia) and back.

Mixing quiet lanes and gravel tracks with bumpier bridleways and forgotten byways, it puts beauty ahead of speed.

Ella Brown, like many of our riders loved the checkpoint in Dartmoor. The team, as ever, were great hosts and you know they make a mean coffee when riders can remember it 400km later! ☕
