Based at the Blackmore in the heart of Sidmouth and with over 130 years of rugby under our belt we are truly an amateur community club.We have three senior teams plus a Colts team. Our 1st team is in Western Counties West and most of the players have progressed from junior teams. The junior section of our club has an ethos of fair play, inclusivity and enjoyment. There are junior teams at every age group from under 7`s to under 16`s with some 270 members - both boys and girls. We hope to soon have our first girls team.We also run an annual charity sevens tournament in May and the occasional veterans game! Sidmouth Rugby Football Club Limited is a company limited by guarantee. The club has an enthusiastic board of directors dedicated to taking the club forward in the same spirit as that laid down by the countless committee volunteers over previous years. Current projects include improving membership benefits and communication and the upgrading and extending our facilities and infrastructure at Sidford, our second home. The pitch refurbishment is not complete but we shall need to wait until next Season use them. We now have a superb new pavilion and car park there to supplement the existing facilities of changing rooms, two senior and two junior pitches. At the Blackmore our clubhouse has two bars and is an excellent venue for our Match Day Experiences. Work is planned to upgrade and refurbish these facilities in the near future to make it an even more attractive facility for local community and business use. We cater for both sponsors and supporters offering excellent hospitality and an opportunity to watch some exciting rugby. We are proud of our strong connections with the local business community and offer a range of advertising and sponsorship opportunities. Glenn Channing, Head of Rugby gave his thoughts ahead of the game:

"This Saturday we welcome Teignmouth RFC to The Blackmore for a home pre-season fixture. It’s a great opportunity to put our hard work into action, with our wider squad getting valuable game time. We have a few more opportunities to get much-needed match minutes and continue building towards our opening league fixture on the 26th September."

TAUNTON 42 – 14 SIDMOUTH

Last night was a real test of character for Sidmouth, taking a depleted squad to National League 2 side Taunton with around a dozen senior players unavailable through injury or other commitments.

Taunton fielded a very strong side, with their first league fixture coming up next weekend, so we knew we were in for a tough evening.

The first half was made even more challenging by facing into the setting sun and a hellish wind. We found ourselves 35–0 down at half time, but the scoreline probably didn’t reflect the overall performance. Take away a number of isolated and avoidable mistakes and the first half would have been a much closer contest.

There were some really positive aspects. Our defensive effort was solid in parts, while our attacking structure was creating opportunities and space. We showed that we can attack as a team, but also cause enough problems to make the opposition tighten up and create opportunities on the edges.

It was particularly pleasing to see some of our 1st XV fringe players take their chances and show that they are more than capable of stepping up when called upon. We also fielded a number of last season’s Colts, which was fantastic to see and an important part of the club’s progression.

The biggest frustration was our basic skill ex*****on, which has been good so far this season. Too many of the opportunities Taunton created came from our own mistakes, and you simply cannot afford to gift chances to quality opposition.

The reaction after half time was another big positive. Taunton were undoubtedly not at their best in the second half, but we still had to take advantage of that, and we did. We created pressure, put them under stress and played with much more intent. It was pleasing to see the players respond and, importantly, Sidmouth won the second half 7–14.

There are some clear areas to work on — particularly clarity of communication in attack, understanding when and where to use the different parts of our game to ‘unlock the door’, and individual defensive work, as well as tightening up our scrum.

Overall, following tough tests against Barnstaple and Taunton, we genuinely feel we are in a good place. There is plenty to work on, but there are also plenty of positives to take.

The character shown by a depleted squad, the opportunities created in attack, the emergence of some fringe players and last year’s Colts, and the response after half time are all things we can build on.

Taunton 42–14 Sidmouth

We move on. 💚🤍💚🤍

🏉 This Friday 🏉

Pre-season fixture – Taunton RFC vs Sidmouth RFC.

Glenn Channing, Head of Rugby gave his thoughts ahead of the game:

"We head into our toughest planned pre-season test this week as we travel to Taunton to face National 2 opposition.

The boys had a really good couple of sessions last week, building on a positive run-out against Barnstaple, and we’ve set ourselves some clear targets to go after.

Playing against quality opposition gives us a great opportunity to test our game under pressure. Taunton will provide a big challenge, particularly around their set piece, so we’ll be looking closely at how we respond defensively, how connected we can stay without the ball and whether we can put them under pressure ourselves.

We’re travelling with an extended squad, which gives a number of players the opportunity to get valuable match minutes and continue putting their hand up ahead of the season.

The lads have worked extremely hard over the last few weeks, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how they respond to the challenge and where we can continue to improve."

Good luck lads!

✉️ Letter from the Chairman - Monday 24th August 2026 ✉️

Dear Member

I am writing to make you aware of an important opportunity that has recently arisen for Sidmouth Rugby Football Club.

Heydon’s Hall, which sits immediately adjacent to our main clubhouse, has historically been used by Sidmouth International School. The building is now on the open market, presenting the Club with an
opportunity that, quite simply, is unlikely ever to arise again.

The proximity of Heydon’s Hall to our existing facilities makes it particularly significant. There are numerous ways in which the building and the land could potentially support the future development of the Club. These could include providing much-needed additional parking, extending or improving our existing clubhouse facilities, creating additional changing facilities, kitchen provision, gym facilities and further social space. There may also be other opportunities for the site that we have not yet considered.

The important point is that once the building and land are sold, the opportunity will be lost
permanently. Given its location immediately alongside our existing facilities, if the property is ultimately acquired for development, there is very unlikely to be any future opportunity for the Club to acquire it.

It is therefore, in my view, a genuinely once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Sidmouth Rugby Football Club.

There is, however, a significant challenge. The Club does not currently have the funds required to purchase Heydon’s Hall. We are therefore exploring what, if anything, might be possible to enable the Club to secure this unique asset for the long-term benefit of its members and future generations; including approaching local charitable trusts etc.

I am sharing this with the membership because the Club belongs to all of us, and because it is possible that within our wider membership and supporter network there may be individuals, families or businesses who could help make this possible.

That support could take many different forms. It might be a substantial donation, a contribution towards the purchase, a legacy to the Club, or potentially a loan or other form of financial support that would allow the Club to acquire the property. We are not, at this stage, asking anyone to make a commitment; rather, we want to make people aware of the opportunity and invite anyone who may have the means or inclination to help to come forward for a confidential conversation.

A contribution towards acquiring Heydon’s Hall would not simply be an investment in a building. It could be an investment in the future of Sidmouth Rugby Football Club and in the generations of players, families and members who will use the Club in the years ahead.

As a Club, we have achieved an enormous amount through the commitment and generosity of our members, volunteers and supporters. This is another moment where we have the opportunity to think ambitiously about what we can leave for those who come after us.

If you feel that you, your family, your business or perhaps someone you know may be able to help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me directly and in confidence. Equally, if you simply have
an idea about how we might be able to make the purchase possible, I would be very pleased to hear from you.

There is no expectation whatsoever, but I felt it was important that the membership was aware of this opportunity before it is too late.
Heydon’s Hall may never come onto the market again. If there is a way for Sidmouth Rugby Football Club to secure it, we owe it to the Club and to future generations to at least explore every possibility.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the Club.

SRFC Chairman
