The 2025/26 Shropshire chess league has started this week with 5 club teams playing.

In division 1, the adult A team beat the junior A 4/1, well done Krish scoring the win for the juniors.

In division 3, Newport B beat Newport Knights 3/1 with P Attada scoring for the Knights, while the Junior C team lost 4-0 to Telford C.

Another fantastic evening of chess.

Congratulations to Steve Szwajkun and Arthur who shared first place in the U1300 section with 7.5/9 pts.

No Nat cleared the field for another winner in the open this week. Congratulations to Chris who scored 8/9 to come 2nd. This wasn't enough though as the one and only Muhammad was undefeated on 8.5/9pts to take top place.

Rating prizes were won by Logan and Aarian in the U1300, and by Richard and Graham in the Open.

Tonight we tried something different. Our very first cake match! A friendly against Wolverhampton - 2 rounds 25min+5sec increment on the clock with an interval for cake 🍰between rounds.

The match itself was incredibly close but Waylon's conversion in the final game means Newport just inched over the line to win the match 7.5-6.5 😀.
As is increasingly common ⭐Muhammad⭐ was our star player being the only player on our team to win both matches.

3 of our players were playing some of their first ever over-the-board matches and managed to notch some crucial victories. Well done guys!
