Final Score:

Shillingstone 2-3 Wyke Regis

On Saturday, Shillingstone welcomed Weymouth outfit, Wyke Regis, to Hine Town Lane it what was hoping to be the potential start of a late outside title charge for the hosts. However, in true Icarus fashion, Shilly flew too close to the sun and were subsequently brought crashing back down to Earth by a gritty Wyke display.

The opening exchanges saw Shillingstone look to utilise Sam Watson leading the line, and there were early signs that havoc would be caused, forcing the Wyke defence into a few minor errors. Despite this though, the hosts started to stutter, and at times were sluggish both in and out of possession. With Shillingstone's foot slowly coming off the pedal, the visitors pounced on this and started to apply some pressure on the back line. After having to weather a few Wyke set pieces, the visitors deservedly took the lead as a tidy cut back from the left back ran through the area for the left midfielder to lash his effort into the bottom corner. Shillingstone did respond positively to this though, and soon drew level as a trademark Ben Martin defence splitting pass saw Sam Watson beat the keeper to the ball, rounding him in the process to stroke into an empty net, a captain's contribution. The remainder of the first half petered out with a couple of half chances from Watson but nothing to get the neutrals out of their seat.

HT 1-1

A big improvement was required from Shillingstone if they were to continue their fine form, and after a second Wyke goal was ruled out for an offside from a Shillingstone sleeper agent, there were some encouraging signs. The hosts had set up camp in the final third, however the end product was very much lacking, with the visitors soaking up pressure comfortably. Shilly could have felt a bit hard done by as a penalty appeal was waved away after Sam Watson wasn't judged to have been fouled in the penalty, but this wasn't the worst part for the clinical forward, as he was subsequently forced off with an ankle injury which likely keeps him out for the rest of the season. This also forced Shilly into a change of positions, with the Ben Edmunds engine now having to be moved into centre forward. Despite the setback, Shillingstone did come again, this time Jack Soden was denied by a good block at the near post, and moments later, Nat Thorne was whiskers away with a fierce whipped effort just outside of the area. As the clock was ticking down, some angst started to creep among the ranks, and the visitors came back with their own threats. With 12 minutes left on the clock, some promising Wyke pressure paid off, as another cut back was tucked neatly into the bottom right corner. Alarm bells now really ringing for Shillingstone, they kept trying to find a way back in, but were shut out with ease, and in turn these offensive legs started to tire, with the visitors able to keep the ball in the final third. As the game entered the last couple of minutes, the hosts did draw level as Jack Soden fired a bullet header from a superb Shane Royal corner, another captain's contribution. With a point not good enough for Shillingstone, they looked to find a winner, but after conceding a corner seconds later, it was the visitors who snagged all three points with a powerful close range header in the last kick of the game. The final whistle sounded, and Shillingstone were deservedly put in their place by a determined Wyke. With the winning streak coming to an end, it was fitting that it was from quite a vibes display.

Man of the Match went to Ben Edmunds, who was an ever present warrior in the middle, fighting for every ball and always looking to try and conjure up some magic, even though it wasn't to be.

Next up for Shillingstone is the return fixture against their Weymouthian counterparts, looking to avenge themselves as the focus shifts to a top four position. More details to follow in the week.

Mid Season Friendly

Final Score:

Shillingstone 7-2 Child Okeford

Yesterday, Shillingstone welcomed Child Okeford to Hine Town Lane to keep legs fresh for both sides as they find themselves towards the conclusion of their respective seasons. With Shilly carrying a lot of momentum, people would have expected the game to be fairly one way traffic, however it didn't transpire to be the case for portions of this match.

The hosts started on the front foot and nearly found themselves a goal to the good in the first five minutes, but Nat Thorne could only put a dangerous Ben Martin delivery wide of the mark. In response to this, the visitors broke the deadlock as Jack Goddard cut out a loose back pass, rounding Wes Cupples to slot into an empty net. With the Okeford tails up, Shillingstone looked to draw level quickly, which they soon did as Sam Watson lashed a quick fire equaliser in at the near post. This response didn't deter the visitors, who soon found themselves ahead again, this time Kamil got the better of Mark Bealing at the back, squeezing a tight effort in at the far post. With the hosts a bit shellshocked by falling behind twice, they drew level once more through Sam Watson, who received a sublime reverse pass from Jack Soden, cutting open the defence and allowing Watson to tuck his effort into the bottom corner. Nat Thorne then had an opportunity to establish a lead for the hosts, but his close range volley was well kept out by a strong leg from Callum Lowe. Shillingstone did eventually take the lead right before the break, as a long pass from Charlie Alford saw Sam Watson get the better of his man and dispatch for his hat trick. Watson nearly turned provider as his inventive flick over his head saw Jack Soden volley narrowly wide.

HT 3-2

After a lackadaisical first half, Shillingstone came flying out of the blocks in the second, and once again Nat Thorne was teed up by Ben Martin, only to fire a half volley narrowly wide of the mark. The lead was doubled soon after as Ben Martin was at the back post to fire in a close range volley. Whilst a cushion was now in place, Child Okeford came back again looking to halve the deficit, and nearly did just that. Charlie Alford midjudged a deep kick from Callum Lowe, which saw Jack Goddard race onto the loose ball, round Wes Cupples as similar to before, but this time Alford recovered and cleared for the corner kick. The visitors came firing again, forcing Cupples into a smart stop at the near post. After taking a breather for five minutes, Sam Watson was reintroduced to the field of play, where he instantly bagged his fourth with a precise finish into the bottom right hand corner. Following the withdrawal from his fight, the man in form, Cain Ayres came close to bagging his first goal for the club, but his powerful header from a Ben Martin set piece was well tipped over the crossbar by Callum Lowe. With the visitors' legs starting to tire, Shilly looked to pile on a bit more, and they soon had their sixth as Harley McIntyre latched onto a crisp Nat Thorne through ball, rifling in his effort at the near post for his first goal for the club. Thorne then sealed his name in the Ben Martin revenge list, as once again he was put through on goal by the tricky left winger, only to fire yet another effort wide of the mark, a chorus of boos lingering around the ground for the makeshift right midfielder. In the dying embers of the game, the hosts rounded their scoring off as Ben Davies marked his return from a lenghty spell on the sidelines with a delightful dinked effort over Lowe's head and in.

Despite the scoreline, and the gap in divisions between the two sides, Child Okeford made a good account of themselves against a Shillingstone side who have sleepwalked themselves into an outside chance of the league title.

Man of the Match went to Sam Watson, who rolled back the years with a vintage display of pinpoint precision in his finishing, bringing back memories of the days of old when he would score hat tricks for fun. Needless to Ben Martin would have been a close second if his beloved teammates and manager decided they wanted to take the chances he put on a plate.

Next up for Shillingstone is a battle at Hine Town Lane for our penultimate home fixture, welcoming Wyke Regis in the first of a double header against the Weymouth outfit. More details to follow in the week.

Dorset Division Four

Final Score:

Chickerell United 0-3 Shillingstone

Yesterday, Shillingstone made the trip to the sunny south coast to do battle with Chickerell United on the finest pitch Redlands have ever kept. The Shilly were looking to keep up their momentum which they subsequently did, albeit not in the prettiest of fashions against a much changed and youthful Chickens outfit.

The opening exchanges were very lacklustre, with the usual high energy in the Shillingstone side lacking. Passing lacked conviction and the hosts were winning a lot more initial 50/50 challenges. The first clear cut chance did fall to the visitors, however Jack Soden was denied from close range after toeing a fizzing Ben Martin cutback. At the other end, Rich Munday was called upon to making a flying save out of the top right corner to deny a sensationally hit free kick from hitting the stanchion. Chickerell did come away with a couple of other half chances through sloppy Shillingstone play, however this wasn't rued as Munday collected tame efforts. After enduring these warning signs, Shilly did break the deadlock, arguably against the run of play. On the 23rd minute, Shillingstone won their first corner, and in true fashion which has been typical of this season, Ben Martin's curled delivery towards the back post ricocheted off the back of Mark Bealing and into the left corner for his first goal in three seasons. This opener alleviated some pressure, and the visitors started to look a bit more dangerous in the attack. Ten minutes later, Mark Bealing came close to a second as he nodded wide from another Ben Martin corner. The hosts did fire off the odd chance effort from distance in response, however this was nothing to trouble the Shillingstone back line.

HT 0-1

Shillingstone did start this half brightly, with a couple of early chances carved out down the left hand side. It was the hosts who were given a golden opportunity to level though, as Brad Hill's long throw in was cleared, and the Chickens forward burst through on goal from the halfway line, only to balloon their one on one effort over the crossbar. The forward was made to rue this missed opportunity as Shillingstone doubled their lead moments later. Owen Glenister burst down the right hand side and drove towards the byline, his subsequent cross was met by Ben Edmunds at the back post who could only head it into the palms of the keeper. With the ball still live, the loose ball was prodded into the path of Jack Soden by Ben Martin, who fired a mish*t effort into the bottom left corner, continuing his fine goalscoring record against Chickerell spanning across nine seasons. Despite the two goal set back, Chickerell were gifted another superb opportunity to halve the deficit, as Shane Royal played a back pass back to Rich Munday which was latched onto by the forward, only for their effort to be placed wide of the mark. Royal came close to redeeming himself moments later though as he saw a ferocious low volley from 30 yards whip half an inch around the wrong side of the post. As Chickerell were reduced to half chances which were consistently off target, Shillingstone grabbed their third to kill the game. A ball into the area from Owen Glenister saw Ben Edmunds and Ben Martin take a couple of bites of the cherry as they had close ranged efforts blocked in quick succession. After some goal mouth scrambling, Ben Edmunds lightly prodded the ball into the path of Ben Martin who tackled the ball into the bottom left corner. This may not join the list of goal of the season contenders, but it was vital in killing off any hopes of a Chickerell fightback. Owen Glenister came close to piling on the misery, as his low full stretch effort from a Ben Martin delivery crashed off the outside of the post. Although the game was signed, sealed, and delivered, the hosts did persevere in their efforts to get on the scoresheet. These efforts were met by a determined Rich Munday and Shillingstone back line that were craving their first clean sheet since October. The game petered out in the dying embers and that clean sheet was secured.

Shillingstone were their own worst enemies for big spells of this game, but ultimately they didn't suffer any repercussions for one of the most lacklustre displays this season. This also makes it five wins on the bounce for the first time in over three years, a true testament to the progress and development that has been made at the club.

Man of the Match this week went to Mark Bealing, who once again put in a hardy display at the back, winning absolutely everything thrown at him, and adding his name to the scoresheet for the first time in three years.

Next week Shillingstone enjoy a weekend off as they support loveable target man, Cain Ayres, in his charity boxing match at the BIC. The following week, Hine Town Lane will see action for the first time since November as we welcome Wyke Regis for our first encounter with them this season.

Dorset Division Four

Final Score:

Shillingstone 2-1 Wool United

On Saturday, Shillingstone welcomed Wool United to the 3G at Blandford. The hosts came out as narrow victors in the away fixture back in January, and they were looking looking to do the double over a side they had struggled against in previous seasons.

The opening exchanges were comfortable but fairly balanced between the two sides. Shillingstone's first big chance fell to Charlie Alford, who couldn't find the back of the net after Cain Ayres had split the defence with a delightful pass. At the other end, the visitors had two good chances which were both denied by the strong hands of Rich Munday. It was Shillingstone who broke the deadlock, continuing their trend of set piece goals against the visitors. With the ball bouncing around in the area from the corner, the ball fell loose to Cain Ayres who prodded the ball into the path of Jack Soden to smash home from close range.

HT 1-0

With the second half underway, Wool were looking for a leveller, however their efforts to break down the Shillingstone defence were fruitless. With the visitors chasing, pockets of space opened up for attempted break aways, however there wasn't much in the way of clear cut chances. Around the 75th minute, the hosts doubled their lead in sensational fashion. James Acott was fouled 30 yards outside of the penalty area, with Owen Glenister unleashing a fierce strike into the top left corner, opening his account for the season. With some breathing room established, Shillingstone saw out the rest of the game comfortably, with the only succumbing of pressure coming with the last kick of the game as Wool netted a consolation goal from a corner, the final whistle sounding immediately after.

With another three points secured, this makes it four wins out of four in 2026 in what has been a significantly improved season. Man of the Match went to Cain Ayres with a menacing display up top, capping the display with an assist.

Next up for Shillingstone is a trip to Weymouth to take on Chickerell United. More details to follow later in the week!

Final Score:

Shillingstone 2-1 Tisbury United Reserves

Today, Shillingstone hosted title chasing Wiltshirians, Tisbury United Reserves, at the temporary home on Blandford's 3G pitch. When the sides faced each other earlier in the season, it was the today's visitors that claimed all three points in a narrow victory. However, today it was Shilly's time to turn the tables.

As was to be expected, The Sharks enjoyed early spells of possession, attempting to prod and probe their way through an organised Shillingstone back line. Despite retaining a lot of possession, they found themselves restricted from carving out any real clear cut opportunities. On occasion, the hosts did break away to try and create an opening, but they failed to really threaten the Tisbury back line. Whilst the opening exchanges were nothing to sing home about, the game was turned on its head as Alfie Jennings was given his marching orders 25 minutes into the game for needless retaliation to a cynical foul. As has been the case for much of this season though, this setback did not deter Shillingstone as they proceeded to take the lead moments later with a stunning effort from Captain James Acott. Harley McIntyre drove forward from right back, and proceeded to fire a pass into the path of James Acott. In turn, Acott took two neat touches past the centre back, setting himself up for a sweetly hit volley straight into the top left corner. The offensive response from Tisbury was once again to be expected, but despite their efforts, they could not find away to break down the defence.

HT 1-0

After managing to get in at half time one up, Shillingstone had to overcome a shape change from the visitors, as Tisbury looked to overload the hosts. It appeared as though Shillingstone would eventually succumb to this pressure, but again they remained robust and organised as they sat everyone behind the ball. Whilst Tisbury were overloading, they did leave themselves vulnerable to the occasional counter attack which caused a few nervy moments from their centre backs. Jack Soden came closest to doubling the lead but his close range volley was mis-hit over the crossbar. Disaster did nearly strike again for Shillingstone, as makeshift centre back James Goddard was penalised inside the penalty area. However, the daunting prospect of netting against the experienced Rich Munday was too much for the Tisbury forward as they nervously sent their spot kick wide of the mark. As the clock ticked down, Owen Glenister found himself in a good position to get an effort off outside of the area, however a smart block killed the pace from the shot and was comfortably collected. This looked as though it was an opportunity to be rued, as with ten minutes left on the clock, the visitors did draw level as the centre back rose highest to power a fierce header in at the back post. At this point, Shillingstone would have been happy to try and see out the game for a point, considering all of the game's events thus far. However, this ragtag bunch of misfits, who had been running tirelessly for the whole game, were simply not done. Jack Soden fired an effort from distance with five minutes left to play, which ultimately transpired to be foreshadowing for the moments to come. Owen Glenister drove through the middle, playing a quick pass into the feet of debutant, Jordan Taylor, who in turn prodded the ball through for Soden to latch onto and dispatch with clinical precision into the bottom left corner. A typically Shilly entrance for a debutant who hasn't graced 11 a side football for many years. With this sucker punch well and truly delivered, Shillingstone saw out the final couple of minutes weathering the kitchen sink and held onto to secure three of their biggest points this season.

Man of the Match went to James Acott this week, who was narrowly followed by Jack Soden. Both players' efforts in the midfield epitomised digging deep, heart on sleeve, and many other football clichés. Of course, both players capped their performance with well taken goals.

Next week, Shillingstone welcome Wool United to Hine Town Lane. This will be another tough test but one to relish as we enter the latter stages of the season. More details to follow later in the week!

Final Score:

Mere Town Reserves 1-5 Shillingstone

Today, Shillingstone travelled north of the border to take on Mere Town Reserves after being deprived of the beautiful game for over a month. The last time the sides met, Shillingstone came away as narrow victors in a feisty affair, however today was a stark contrast to the reverse fixture.

With 12 players unavailable for today, Shillingstone had to make some changes to the shape to accommodate the resources available. After weathering a couple of early chances from the hosts, including a tame one on one save from Rich Munday, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock inside ten minutes. With the ball up in the air, Ben Martin was bundled over inside for the first of three spot kicks. Sam Watson stepped to comfortably slot into the bottom left corner. Five minutes later, it was Watson's turn to be brought down in the penalty area, this time Jack Soden stepped up to place his spot kick to the bottom right corner. Mere responded to this early two goal setback, but Rich Munday was on hand to deny a point blank effort at the near post. The next period played out as a battle between the midfield, with neither side carving out much of an opportunity. The Mere centre forward came close with a long range effort, and Munday was called into action for another routine stop. Around the half hour mark though, the visitors conjured up a goal of pure quality and flair. Charlie Ashton received the ball out to the right, playing a reversed scoop chip pass into the path of Jack Soden. In turn, Soden flicked a well weighted volleyed pass over the shoulder of James Goddard, who dispatched a thunderous volley from 25 yards out, clattering off the crossbar and in. Whilst the goal of the season decision is a democratic one come the end of the year, you'll be hard pushed to find someone score a better goal this season. The delirium that had set in took a while to clear, and during this lapse of concentration, the hosts nicked a goal back before half time with a glancing header from a deep free kick.

HT 1-3

With Mere's hope reignited after their late goal in the first half, they proceeded to take control of the opening exchanges of the second period. The robust back line were on the receiving end of a peppering of crosses and set pieces, and it looked inevitable that the hosts were going to find a way back in. However, whilst this pressure was being applied, it was not capitalised on, and subsequently punished against the run of play by the visitors. Charlie Ashton once again kickstarting the move as he won the ball down the right, feeding into Jack Soden who swivelled and played into Sam Watson. Watson cut the defence open with a crisp pass which saw Shillingstone's answer to Jermain Defoe, Ben Edmunds, latch on and knock a heavy touch through the keeper's legs and smash the ball into an empty net to kill the game. The belly fire within the hosts was extinguished with this sucker punch of a fourth goal, and the visitors were gunning for me. Nat Thorne, freshly introduced for the first time since November, came close to adding a fifth as his header sailed narrowly over the bar. The fifth did come though moments later as Ben Martin was brought down in the area again, this time taking the spot kick himself which he placed into the bottom left corner. At the other end, the hosts were still carving out some chances, and came close by hitting the crossbar. Rich Munday was called upon to do what he does best, which is making fine saves for all to appreciate. With the game done and dusted, Nat Thorne was given a golden opportunity to add a sixth at the death, but his curling and partially dinked effort rattled off the crossbar and away. The final whistle sounded, securing Shillingstone an emphatic win away from home against the side sitting third in the table prior to kick off.

Man of the Match went to Mark Bealing this week, who was once again solid at centre back, winning every aerial dual and winning every challenge. An imposing force in the back four.

Next week we welcome title chasing Tisbury United Reserves to Hine Town Lane in what should be another tight battle. More details to follow later in the week!
