๐Ÿ“‹ ๐Ÿป Match report ๐Ÿป๐Ÿ“‹

Sherburn travelled away, yet again, for their 6th league game of this season, to Keighley Albion A. Despite their position in the league, Keighley teams are generally a much tougher proposition at home than they are away, and with this in mind a tough afternoon was expected.

The first half saw the Bears coming up the substantial slope at Albions Crossflats ground, the opening salvos fairly even with Sherburn scoring through scrum half Kyle Dutson, conversion added from Ste Hayes, before Albion equalled with a converted try of their own with 20 minutes gone, the game would continue to be an arm wrestle for another 15 minutes until substitute prop Lewis Vickers would show some deft footwork in Keighley's ten to crash over, again Hayes converted for the Bears to take a 6-12 lead into half time.

As the second half got underway Keighley continued to be a handful and made light of the slope as they capitalised on a cheeky ball steal with the Bears exiting their own half, surging over the line against the run of general play whilst the visitors were still protesting the decision, no conversion but the hosts were back in the game at 10-12 with 5 minutes of the half gone.

This though would prove to be the closest Albion A would get to the visitors, as Sherburn showed a degree of maturity as a team, coming up with a couple of big defensive sets to pin the home team in their own half, lead by second row pairing of Sam Booth and Danny Gill who were in the thick of the action, strong downfield carries from Dom Romans, Matty Burke and Luke Ford set up the field position for winger Euan Mill-Hughes to cross, no conversion but the Bears took control of the scoreboard again at 10-16 with 10 minutes of the half gone.

Sherburn started to hit their straps now and increased their lead when dangerous centre Lucas Ketteridge broke through from 30 out to cross for the Bears next score hot on the heals of the last, again no conversion as Sherburn pushed their lead out to 10-20. A second try for Mill-Hughs soon followed following a deft grubber kick behind the defence from scum half Dutson, still no conversion meant 10-24 with 20 minutes of the half gone as the Bears benefitted from coming down the slope. A brief spell of indiscipline from the home side followed where they attempted to wrestle the momentum away from the visitors and force their way back into the game through some 'old school' bring back the biff style tactics, the referee though to his credit wasnโ€™t having any of it and a couple of the Keighley players went for a 10 minute breather. From the resulting penalties and possession Sherburn put the game to bed with scores from lively young ho**er Tom Best and Rangi Chase style half back trapped in a middles body Ethan Potts pulling off some of his usual crowd pleasing antics, Dutson added a 3rd conversion of the day to take the score to 10-34, where it would stay until the final whistle.

Whilst Sherburn barely got out of bottom gear for the most part, credit must go to a game Albion A who never gave in and ultimately gave a good account for themselves in a game that was often tighter than the scoreline suggested at the finish. Best on the day for the Bears was in 3rd place ho**er come loose forward Keanu Beane, despite having a quiet first half, he put in a monumental shift in the second half when the Bears were reduced to 12 men for 10 minutes, his work rate in defence ensuring that the home team didnโ€™t get chance to capitalise on their numerical advantage. Second place went to winger Mills-Hughs, enjoying his best season of open age rugby, he played his best game of the season to date, with a high work rate with the ball creating important time for the hard tackling middles to recover, he looked constantly dangerous on the edge of Keighley's defence and took both of his scores with some style. Frist place went to young ho**er Best, coming onto the field from the bench he was outstanding, his probing from dummy half caused constant problems for the home team and his distribution was excellent as was the aggressive defence in the middle often against much bigger opponents looking to single him out, a fine individual score capped what was an excellent performance.

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ“‹ Match Report ๐Ÿ“‹๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ”ด

The quarter finals of the YML Shield for Divisions 4 & 5 was the fixture and Thanet Road in York was the venue against York Acorns A team on Saturday gone. As expected with Acorns first team having no fixture it was a stronger A team than the one that faced the Bears in their first match of the season when a very strong Acorn A defeated the Bears 42-10 at Eversley Park in a pre-season friendly.

On a blisteringly hot afternoon Acorn came out of the traps at a 1000 mph looking to win the game in the opening stages, super fast and aggressive line speed saw Sherburn struggling to make meters out of their own half, whilst strong carries from across the park from a confident home team saw the first 15 minutes of the game played almost exclusively in the Bears half of the field. York capitalised on every bit of possession won in the Bears half, forcing repeat sets and errors to score some well worked tries out wide to build up a commanding 14-0 lead with 3 x tries under 20 minutes in. Sherburn though to their credit refused to buckle and continued to tackle their hearts out to keep Acorn out on numerous occasions with big defensive stints from Layton Orford, Dec Lewis, Dom Romans, Danny Gill, Kyle Dutson and Ste Hayes, otherwise the score could easily have been more during this period.

With encouragement from the dug out to keep slowing the play the ball as much as possible and keep completing sets and getting to a kick to turn the hosts around, Sherburn gradually started to turn the tide, excellent work from fullback Mikey Hayward carrying the ball repeatedly got the Bears on the front foot in possession, strong carries from Orford, Gill, Matty Burke, Keanu Beane, Dom Romans and the introduction of young ho**er Tom Best darting out of dummy half saw Sherburn start to see some ball in the homes teams 40 as the half wore on, forcing an error Sherburn capitalised with a well worked score from Orford from close range, Ste Hayes, Mr Reliable with the boot stepped up to make it 14-6 on the stroke of half time.

The score just before half time seemed to rattle the home side, whilst at the same time seeing the visitors grow in confidence, unlike previous weeks Sherburn stuck to the game plan completing sets and playing for territory whilst Acorn kept forcing the pass and coughing up errors that gifted the Bears possession in their half, Sherburn took their opportunities with first Hayward diving over, and then new recruit Henry Livsey scoring a lovely try after the Bears jammed Acorn into the opposite corner on their own goal line before beautifully spreading the ball to their left for a well executed team score, expertly finished off by Livsey who showed impressive speed balance and composure to round his opposite centre for the try. Both scores were duly converted by that man Hayes for the Bears to take the lead, deservedly for the first time at 14-18 with 70 minutes gone.

In true Sherburn style though, back to back penalties with some โ€˜over exuberantโ€™ defending saw York on the Bears goal line for 2 x sets of 6, which was duly upped to 3 sets when the ref decided this was the time to give the games only 6 again for offside, the weight of possession finally told and York dived over out wide to level the score 18-18. The 3rd missed conversion from Acorn meant the scores were locked at 18 all with less than 10 mins to go in a game that would go to extra time if the match was still tied at full time. Sherburn though refused to let Yorks score change the momentum and a short kick off from Hayes saw the Bears gain possession in Acorns half, showing enormous patience and not forcing anything the Bears camped in the home teams half before slotting over a drop goal from yes, you guessed it, Ste Hayes to take an 18-19 lead with just minutes of the game left. Acorn immediately replied gathering their own short kick off from the restart and pressed on Sherburnโ€™s 40 looking for a winning score, a wide ball though was gratefully intercepted from Hayes who raced away looking for all the world like this once thoroughbred race horse was going to relive his glory years and romp home, alas even he cant escape father time and was pulled down by a last ditch tackle from a rather more youthful Acorn player just yards short from the try line, quick thinking from winger Liam Brown however saw him dart out of dummy half following Hayes quick play the ball, to round the only Acorn defender and dive over to score. No conversion this time but it didnโ€™t matter as the referee called this pulsating fixture to an end with a final score of 18-23 to the Bears.

Credit must go to both sides for a top quality game of amateur rugby league played to a standard well above division 4 or 5 in blisteringly hot conditions, the game really could have gone either way with both teams deserving of the win. It was an incredibly tough pick for the man of the match, a mammoth second half stint from Addy Mac saw him play the entire second half and come agonisingly close to a couple of scores in desert heat conditions, along with incredible contributions in attack and defence from Orford, Dutson, Lewis, Gill, Dom Romans and many more made this a memorable team performance, especially with a completion rate of over 70%, certainly the best the team has managed this season and more than likely a number of season before this one.

Never the less man of the matches must be awarded and 3rd place went to young Sherburn ho**er Tom Best, playing his first game for the club following his Lock Lane transfer, and what a debut it was, changing the speed of the ruck upwards for the visitors from the minute he took to the field, tenacious in defence and full of energy in attack he proved a constant thorn in Acorns side from the moment he was introduced into the fray 20 minutes into the game. Second place went to ho**er come loose forward Keanu Bean, another home grown player, he switched from ho**er to Loose with the introduction of Best and played his best rugby at 13, an absolute machine in the defensive line and a deceptively strong carrier of the ball constantly making extra meters on the attack, his contribution was vital in keeping the Bears bigger middles going in 30 degree heat playing all 80 minutes of the game. First place went to fullback Mikey Hayward, with the best part of 2 x carries per set, every set, he took an enormous workload of the forwards and constantly probed and tested the home sides defensive line being the start of the majority of the visitors line breaks, on top of this his composure and organisation at the back of the Bears defensive line was absolutely top notch and helped the team hold it together from first minute to last. A special mention must go to Sherburn stand off Hayes, who again rolled back the years with a vintage display in the halves, whether it be with hand or foot as the Bears ball carriers started to create the space he duly started to pull the strings on what was a memorable win for this season so far, but having weighed up all the proโ€™s and conโ€™s he was denied a spot in the man of the matches because he missed a goal kick, some standards just have to be maintained regardless!

Sherburn will now look forward to the semi-final against another tough opponent in Stanningley A on Sat the 18th of July, as the other semi-final will be played between Hull Wyke the current leaders of Div 5 against either Methley or Crigglestone, a match due to be played this Saturday at Methley, best of luck to both teams in this quarter final. The Bears will return to league action at 2.30pm on Saturday 6th of June at Kings Cross Park A at Eversley Park, this will see the lads sporting this years new kit, and the taking of the team photos for the 2026 season as well as thanking the sponsors.

๐Ÿ”ด๐Ÿ”ต๐Ÿ“‹ Match Report ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿป

Sherburn travelled to Stanningley A on Saturday for their 4th away game from the first 5 matches played, some of the players are starting to forget what Eversley Park looks like! Stanningley have enjoyed some strong results in the early rounds of Division 4 in the Yorkshire Menโ€™s League and the Bears expected a tough game.

With a few bodies missing through work, injury and holiday it was all Sherburn could do to field a 17 man team, Stanningley boasted a young but athletic and well drilled side and were up for knocking off the league leaders. The game started slowly for the Bears and their slow start gave Stanningley the chance to grow into the game, Sherburn were guilty of wasting possession on a number of occasions forcing a last pass that went to ground on far too many occasions. Back to back penalties from the back of a Bears error gifted Stanningley possession and a well worked move saw them swiftly shift the ball to the edge where their fleet footed winger rounded Kyle Dutson who claims that he was playing with a broken ankle and running through a boggy part of the pitch, as the Stanningley winger rounded him with ease to score on their edge, no conversion but the hosts took the lead 10 minutes in at 4-0.

The Bears ignored all calls from the side lines to settle down and complete some sets and continued to turn over the ball set after set and inviting the home team to attack in their half, and Stanningley duly delivered with a second well worked move to open up the Bears defence and score to make it 10-0 on the 25 minute mark. Sherburn continued to gift the ball back to the hosts as we can only assume as a team they were enjoying defending in their own half. Mentions must go to Danny Gill, Dec Lewis, Ben Pugh and Lucas Ketteridge who worked overtime in defence to keep the home side at bay.

The talk at half time was all about completing sets with the ball as the first half had seen a measly 2 x sets actually get to a kick. Sherburn kicked off the second half and immediately forced an error from the hosts, from the resulting turn over Ethan Potts dived over from close range for a try converted from kicking maestro Ste Hayes to put the Bears back in the hunt at 10-6 with just a couple of minutes of the half gone. It seemed though that this score inspired the Bears to once again adopt a Harlem Globetrotters style of play and yet again a cheap turn over of possession gifted Stanningley possession in the Bears 20, proving that the first 2 x scores werenโ€™t a fluke Stanningley expertly crafted some space from a lovely move to score their 3rd try and added the conversion taking their lead back out to 2 x scores at 16-6 with 30 minutes of the game left.

Credit must go to the Bears for finally listening to the calls from the dug out, and a series of completed sets turned Stanningley around with deep kicks and gradually Sherburn started to take control of the game, a 10 minute period of arm wrestle saw the Bears start to dominate field position and a well worked move saw Kyle Dutson crash over out wide, up stepped Hayes to nail the conversion and take the game to 16-12, with 10 minutes left. Sherburn continued to turn the screw, completing sets and kicking deep to pin Stanningley in their own half, an error from the home side gifted the Bears possession in their 20, and Sherburn duly delivered their 3rd score with playmaker Ste Hayes diving over after some strong carries from the forwards got the Bears to the home teams line, Hayes stepped up to convert his own score and give the Bears the lead for the first time in the game at 16-18 with just 5 minutes left.

Sherburn saw the game out completing their sets and finished off with a drop goal from that man Hayes again for good measure to round the match out at 16-19. There were some big performances in the second half in what was a tough game on the road for the lads, Kyle Dutson was excellent, as was substitute Paul Robinson rolling back the years. Man of the matches went to 3rd place Mikey Haywood, not his best performance in a Bears shirt but always composed and a constant thorn in the home teams side with his kick returns. Second place went to forward Ethan Potts, starting in the centres before moving into the pack he caused constant problems for the home team in both attack and defence. Frist place went to Sherburn talisman Ste Hayes, taking control of the second half he directed the team around the park and had a hand in all Sherburnโ€™s best play, as well as kicking all the goals and scoring the winning try.

Another tough away fixture awaits Sherburn this Saturday as they travel down the A64 to face a York Acorn A team that will no doubt be boyed by their first team not having a game as they square off in the Yorkshire Menโ€™s League Shield Cup for teams in Division 4 & 5. Kick off 2.30pm at York Acorn.

๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ“‹ Match Report ๐Ÿ“‹๐Ÿ‰

Sherburn travelled away to bottom of the league Ossett Trinity A on a Thursday night for their fourth match in the Yorkshire Mens League Division 4, looking to make it four wins on the bounce and maintain their position as the early pace setters at the top of the table.

A big Ossett pack came at the visitors all guns blazing in the first 5 minutes and aided with some penalties from the man in the middle as well as some inventive play with the ball they camped on the Bears line for the first 3 x sets of the game. Sherburn though showed resilience in defence with a series of excellent tackles and big hits from Sam Booth and Dec Lewis amongst others to repel the home side . As soon as the Bears regathered the ball they promptly broke down the field from their own half and scored under the posts with new centre Lucas Ketteridge scoring the try from an excellent team move. Ste Hayes added the extras to make it 6-0 with 7 minutes gone.

Ossett continued to carry hard and tackle hard but the class of the Bears started to tell, with full back Kyle Dutson, Ho**er Keanu Bean and pivots Ste Hayes and Ben Pugh starting to pull the strings and dominating the game. A second score soon followed again from great team build up for Kyle Dutson to finsh a sweeping move, again Ste Hayes added the extras to make it 12-0 with 20 mins gone. Sherburn now started to hit their straps and despite a couple of golden chances going begging with the ball going to ground, 2 more scores were quickly added, first Dec Lewis powered his way over from 40 yards out, although this figure is somewhat disputed with many claiming it was in fact 4 yards out! Next up saw centre Tom Romans crash over out wide following a cut out wonder pass from stand off maestro Ste Hayes, Hayes converted both to see the Bears take a 24-0 lead into half time.

The start of the second half saw a reinvigorated Ossett come out of the blocks firing yet again and the first 10 mins of the half was a physical affair with both teams trying to win the middle of the field, Sherburn though weathered the storm and asserted their dominance when back rower Danny Gill broke the line from 40 out and galloped over the line, Hayes again added the conversion to make it 30-0. Sherburn bombed another 2 or 3 chances with the line begging, with the chief culprit Ben Pugh raining in his desire to throw wonder passes and instead concentrating on his other main skill set of impossible offloads! Still Sherburn found a way over with Dom Romans rampaging over the line after a great ball from Ho**er Bean put him through a gap behind the ruck, again Hayes added the conversion to make it 36-0.

Unfortunately Ossett by now were running out of bodies so the ref was forced to call the game a result with a little over 60 minutes gone. Best on the day for the Bears in what was an excellent all round performance against a team where the scoreline doesnโ€™t really give Ossett the credit they deserve for putting in such a tough performance, was, in third place Mikey McHugh, coming off the bench the no nonsense middle put in a brilliant shift proving a real handful with the ball and a tackling machine in defence. Second place went to returning forward Ethan Potts, who once again proved his class causing nothing but problems for Ossett and their supporters with a cheeky grin and pure grit with and without the ball. First place went to mercurial pivot and Sherburn talisman Ste Hayes, despite playing with busted ribs, he glided around the field displaying his silky skills be that with hand or boot, all of the Bears best rugby had his finger prints on them, at times as he often looks he was on a different level to everyone else on the pitch.

Another good win on the road as the Bears look forward to playing away at Stanningley next Saturday, if you get the chance this year get down and watch some of the excellent rugby that this years Sherburn side is dishing up, its very easy on the eye. ๐Ÿป
