It is my last and final day of dancing at Ilam park today. This one is special... Look who I'm learning from today!...

Angelina Abel is the Angolan-born, Portugal-raised choreographer and artistic director behind Mulembas d’Africa, a Sheffield-based African movement dance classes that offers weekly classes, and cross-cultural workshops. She is also the creator/founder of MAMAWE Afro-Pean dance festival.

Her work draws on Angolan Bantu spiritual movement traditions and prioritises the primal power of movement for personal growth and community bonding.

As a choreographer, Angelina believes in the power of dance as a healing tool, as a point of unity, and on its use to promote social cohesion.

We will be starting sessions at 10am, 11.15, 1pm and 2.30. you can just turn up as bookings are closed. Bring your body, your nan, your mate or your kids... Some of you might join in while others picnic in the sunshine! ..enjoy!!!

A final day of dance and movement sessions at Ilam Park with the brilliant Angelina Abel of Mulembas D'Africa, who draws from her Portuguese and Angolan roots to create movement and dance sessions for the soul. I am so excited to be working alongside Angelina for these special collaborative sessions and I hope you can join us.

Monday 18th & Tuesday 19th August - Seeds of Imagination Summer Camp

In our 'Seeds of Imagination' summer camp days at the Botanical Gardens next week, we will be dipping into the stories of Giraffe's Can't Dance (my absolute favourite!) and Alice in Wonderland. we'll be making costumes or props, creating drama and dance pieces in and amongst the faun and flora of the gardens, with no pressure to perform and lots of fun games and memory-making to be done!

Peak District, National Trust Fun Drum BBC Derby ShakeOut - movement and dance

Well that was fun!!! I just had the most wonderful two days of hosting and creating music, movement and dance at Longshaw for the Peak District, National Trust with Lucy Huzzard (thank you for connecting us Rosie Huzzard!). Lucy is so, so talented and I really hope we work together again. The kids were totally enchanted by her beautiful melodian and all the melodies!

For our second ShakeOut! Sunday at Ilam Park I worked with Ruth from Fun Drum and Kind Yoga. It was such a brilliant day of movement, drumming, play and ideas sharing, in a stunning, evocative landscape. Thanks to everyone who came along, joined in the silliness and created the magic, especially to Ruth - it was loads of fun working together!

A week on Sunday (August 17th) I will be back with Angelina Abel of Mulebas D'Africa who will bring her energy and passion for movement and dance, rooted in her Portuguese/ Angolan heritage. I've been so inspired by talking with Angelina about movement and dance, I cannot wait to work with her too. It's a free event, funded but the Peak District, National Trust's summer of Play, and there are loads of things happening in the landscape too. You could easily spend a day playing/ picnicking/exploring (and of course join us for a dance!)!

What a week! We ran our 'Natural Rhythms' summer camps at the Sheffield Botanical Gardens and were in awe of the wild imaginations, creativity and teamwork on both days.

The camps were structured but also responsive to the children, the landscape and the stories we delved into. We learned about Bruin, the Botanical Gardens bear who didn't want to be an entertainer.

We were inspired by the protagonist Little Red in The Last Wolf (by Mini Grey) to make a protest and perform poems for wildlife and the planet. Fairies and tree spirits fought off witchy villains in a battle between good and evil.

We played, danced, explored and plotted. We ate our packed lunches, blew giant bubbles and made new friendships and memories!

Thank you so much to the children for making it so brilliant. We have our next holiday camp installment 'Seeds of Imagination' coming up on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th August, again at the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, and open to children aged 6-13. We would love your child/ren to join us!

Welcome to my ShakeOut! page, I'm Jenny. ShakeOut! started with an after-school dance club at the school I was teaching at, and still work at. I loved the club and could see the benefits for the children - from exercise to exploring music and developing teamwork skills and confidence. I began another club at my daughter's school. And then another, which I co-teach with my first trainee, Ruby.
I'm curious about the benefits of movement and dance for children and have completed an introductory Dance and Movement Therapy course with Roehampton University, which I loved. I have woven some of this learning into how I run my clubs. I aim to create fun sessions, and all feelings are welcome. We've danced through the ages, from swing to hip hop and even had a break-dancing guest teacher. We do ceilidh dancing (think freestyle hokey-cokey!) and partner dancing, and we experiment with new games and ideas. I like dancing outside and within different spaces and contexts, and we might devise pieces but there's no pressure to perform.
I'm beginning to organise some events and camps during the summer and will use this page to share information about these, as well as videos of people doing excellent dance moves that I wish I could do too!
