A wonderful review from yesterday’s course:

“On Sunday I attended the course 'Moving onto Moorland' navigation course.

I would like to say that I had a thoroughly brilliant day with Linda, Claire and Cornelia.

Linda is an excellent tutor. Patient, extremely knowledgeable and it was a pleasure to spend the day with her and the others. The course was fun, thorough and Linda was very supportive. I learnt so much and now feel more confident about going on hikes and using these skills and knowledge.

I would recommend your courses to anyone wishing to gain knowledge regarding map reading, etc.

Many thanks to Linda Moran and to your team for giving me and people like me the opportunity to learn such vital and useful skills.”

Interesting to compare old and current maps.

Ordnance and Survey celebrates its birthday this weekend on 21 June, turning 235 years old.

These stamps were produced in 1991 and show snippets of a map of the village of Hamstreet in Kent from 1816, 1906, 1959 and 1991. Chosen because the very first map produced by Ordnance Survey was of the county of Kent.

A rare map moment is moving on. 🧭

This Saturday, 13 December, England says goodbye to a phenomenon centuries in the making. The rare alignment of the three norths - true north, magnetic north and grid north - leaves England at Berwick-upon-Tweed after three historic years together.

Events like this haven’t been recorded since the 1600s - and once it departs, the alignment won’t return for hundreds of years. Next stop? Scotland in 2026, before disappearing back into the North Sea.

Will this change how you navigate? No. Good map and compass users already account for the differences between magnetic and grid north.

But as rare moments go, this one’s worth marking on the map.

Where will you be following the three norths from? 📍

Did you know that we offer lots of “hidden extra’s” for people who join one of our courses? These include pre-course videos to watch at your leisure, explaining the basics of map reading. Post course videos about keeping safe in the hills and mountains, a What’s App group where you can ask questions and keep in contact and twice yearly free “Nav and Natter” guided walk where you can meet up with others to talk hill walking, map reading and navigation and the outdoor environment.
