Fitkids Forest Skills After School Club on Thursday night, was all about our the flora! We were a little wet but once more, our beautiful tribe got stuck in making mocktails and natural energy balls- not to mention sampling their gooey delights!
We tried home made elderflower cordial; cleaver (sticky w**d ); and apple juice mocktails and oat, syrup and dates energy balls.

We identified so many plants on our site and learnt all about useful and tasty plants, as well as the more hazardous ones. Our children are amazing at always checking with the instructor before nibbling on them- especially our regular Sorell munchers!!

Well done, everyone. As always, your enthusiasm knew no bounds and your creativity was just wonderful!

A busy, creative and wonderful session tonight, after a 2 week break with my enthusiastic Y3/4 Forest Skills tribe!

We began by retelling Danny English’ story from Webekids - ‘How colour came into the world.’ It was a belated nod to ‘butterfly awareness day’ at the weekend. It also highlights nature items such as bluebells, kingfishers, acorns, dandelions and many more words that have disappeared from the Junior Oxford Dictionary. There is a beautiful book called The Lost Words that focuses on this.

The craft table was none stop tonight with happazome butterflies (hammering petals and leaves onto material) and safely using hammers and knives to split wood cookies to make butterflies. So much creativity and lots of questions!

As always, hammock relaxing was going on and a wonderful child-led initiated technology project, which involved problem solving, inquiry, team work and lots of communication skills.

We rounded off the session around the campfire with hot chocolate, and butterfly decorated toast. No two ‘butterflies’ were the same but chocolate spread and jam faces definitely were!

Well done, everyone. It was good to have you all back.

Rachel xx

Well, the downpours didn’t dampen our spirits at Forest Skills After School club on Thursday at Totley Primary School. We learnt all about butterflies, in readiness for Butterfly awareness day on Saturday 6th June. Some of us made ‘seed bombs’ with flour and compost containing cornflowers to entice butterflies into our area and gardens at home.

There were so many cooperative skills and meaningful conversations going on, which included magic tricks, taking turns on our swings, as well as avoiding and embracing the showers!

We rounded off the session with hot chocolate and toast - decorated as our own butterflies.

We were so proud of the children for their resilience. They really are a fabulous bunch!

What a brilliant day we had at Forest Skills Camp yesterday 🌿🔥

The children threw themselves into every activity with such enthusiasm, curiosity and confidence. We foraged nettles and cooked our own nettle crisps over the fire, with so many children showing incredible resilience by trying new foods and stepping outside of their comfort zones.

We practised knot tying skills whilst creating beautiful nature photo frames, and went on the hunt for sticky w**d which we turned into our very own sticky w**d mocktails — these definitely went down a treat! 🍃🥤

The children also had the chance to make their own energy bars, choosing from natural ingredients including nettle seeds and plantain seeds collected from the site. It was wonderful seeing everyone so engaged and adventurous.

Fire lighting was another highlight, with the children helping to build and start the fire safely and confidently 🔥

The DIY zip lines were a huge success too, with lots of teamwork, problem solving and determination involved.

We finished the day venturing deeper into the woods to find shade, where the children created their own imaginative games including hide and seek zombie tag — lots of laughter, teamwork and happy faces all round 🌳

We are so proud of every child for embracing challenges, supporting one another and making the most of a fantastic day outdoors.

If you would like to have your children outside in nature tomorrow- think about booking them on our Forest Skills camp.
Activities we will be doing are:
Hapa zome/ weaving with natural materials and making wood frames for our masterpieces by using knot techniques & tools, whilst exploring the plants and flowers around us; prepping the fire by wood chopping & cooking nettle crisps and making cleaver mocktails.
We will be making natural energy bars using oats, dates, syrup and toasting anything we’ve foraged such as fresh Hawthorne leaves, nettle seeds etc.
We will be utilizing the beautiful, cooling woods for games; crafts such as Nordic braiding & water colour paints and den building.
Throughout the day we will be led by the children’s interests.

We had a brilliant time at Dronfield Juniors Year 5/6 Forest Skills club this term!

From campfire doughnuts to getting covered in flour, building showers to wild garlic doughballs. Here are some of the other things we've been up to over the last few weeks: turning the water run into a jenga slide, making clay hedgehogs, toasting crumpets and drizzling them with homemade dandelion syrup, chilling in the hammock, making pizza wraps and creating wax rubbings of leaves. We also celebrated World Bee Day with a bee quiz and decorating tasty bumblebee biscuits!

Looking forward to welcoming everyone back after the holiday for more fun.

We also celebrated World Bee Day with a bee quiz and making tasty bumblebee biscuits! 🐝

Looking forward to more adventures next term!
