My 3 birthday wishes: ( fitness for everyone)
It was my 36th birthday last week so I'm using it to make 3 wishes; related to health and fitness. But not my own. For people in general, so we can all move forward and live better lives.
1. Please just move- I may enjoy and mainly coach people in resistance training based in gyms but if you aren't doing any exercise or physical activity doing anything regular is going to have a positive impact on your long term health. Whether that be a sport, dancing, exercise classes or even just walking more - any physical activity and exercise is associated with a long list of health improvements and physiological changes. Find something you enjoy and keep at it.
2. Stop worrying about advice you don't need till later- With so much information and opinions around fitness, health and nutrition available along with a need to make it stand out (usually by hyperbole) many people become frozen by things they don't need to worry about now. I'd like more people to understand where they are now and what is a higher priority. If you only train once a week don't worry about too much volume. If you do get enough fibre in you diet you shouldn't panic about whether fresh or canned vegetables are better. Don't listen to what is optimal or what top athletes do (and ignore the plethora of misinformation), focus on being better where you currently are.
3. Realise the human body is resilient and adaptable- Too many times I hear that individuals have been told never to do X exercise or use Y equipment, or have simply picked up a fear of it. Human bodies are quite resilient and will adapt with enough time and steady progression. So instead of fear or avoidance simply give things a go; starting light, doing a few reps and sets and then seeing how your body respsonds over the next few days. Whilst there will always be exceptions most exercises just require the right entry level or modification.
