Tonight marks the final fixture of a long and demanding season as Pomona welcome last season’s champions to the Jubilee.

Pomona still have an opportunity to secure their targeted top-four finish, with victory tonight and other results potentially going in their favour.

Kiveton claimed a 3–1 win in the reverse, although the scoreline did not truly reflect Pomona’s performance. Pomona controlled large periods of the match and will be hoping to take confidence from that display into tonight’s encounter.

Kick-off at the Jubilee is at 6:30pm.

Kiveton Park 3 - 1 Pomona FC

Pomona made a slow start to the match, showing Kiveton too much respect in the opening stages. They stood off their opponents, failed to compete strongly enough for first and second balls, and were punished by conceding two disappointing headers inside the box. The first came from a set-piece, where a player was left unmarked, while the second followed a handling error from the goalkeeper.

However, Pomona gradually grew into the game. Their challenges became stronger, their passing sharper, and the overall intensity of their play noticeably improved. Joe Hackworthy produced an excellent clipped pass over the Kiveton defence to find Andy Thompson, who finished confidently past the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner. From that moment, Pomona settled well and began to play some outstanding football.

For large periods of the second half, Pomona had last season’s champions pinned back and under pressure. Frustratingly, as has been the case too often this season, they struggled to find the decisive final ball in key moments.

Despite that, Pomona remained competitive throughout. Although Kiveton continued to look dangerous at times, Pomona’s defence handled their threat well while also carrying an attacking threat of their own. Andy Thompson worked tirelessly up front, while Simon Bonnett linked play effectively after coming on as a substitute. Pomona created enough opportunities to feel they could still find an equaliser right until the closing moments.

Unfortunately, with virtually the last kick of the game, a stray Pomona pass led to a Kiveton breakaway, and the home side added a third goal to seal the result.

It was a harsh outcome for Pomona, who deserved at least a share of the points, but they can take plenty of encouragement from a strong overall performance against quality opposition.

Sheffield FC 5–1 Pomona FC

A frustrating afternoon for Pomona, with the final scoreline failing to reflect the balance of play or the number of chances created throughout the match
Credit must go to Sheffield FC, who were well organised and clinical when it mattered most, taking their opportunities effectively to secure the win
Pomona started brightly, moving the ball well and causing problems out wide. Their positive approach was rewarded with the opening goal following a well-worked corner routine. Simon Hawley delivered an inviting cross which evaded everyone — including the goalkeeper — before finding the top corner to give Pomona a deserved 1–0 lead
Unfortunately, Sheffield responded almost immediately with a speculative effort that found the net and shifted the momentum in their favour.

Despite the setback, Pomona continued to create opportunities during the first half. Simon Yeadon was a constant threat down the right, dangerous balls were delivered into the box, Stephen Logan forced a save and Adam Littlewood produced an impressive driving run through midfield.

However, Pomona gradually lost their shape and allowed Sheffield back into the game. Had Pomona managed to reach halftime still ahead the mentality and momentum heading into the second half may have looked very different. Instead, the game swung decisively early after the restart.

A controversial goal combined with a couple of costly mistakes, saw Sheffield punish Pomona quickly and take control of the contest.

Even then, Pomona continued to create enough chances to stay in the game. Simon Bonnett and Jason Allsebrook both saw efforts saved, while Pete Hoult, Michael Hayes, and Adam Littlewood all fired over the bar from promising positions. James Illingworth also missed a clear opportunity when through on goal, while several dangerous deliveries flashed across the face of goal without a finishing touch.
Ultimately, Pomona were left to rue missed opportunities, while Sheffield proved ruthless in front of goal
Attention now turns to the final two matches of the season, both against last season’s champions, Kiveton Park.

POMONA FC 2 - 3 OUGHTIBRIDGE W.M.

Pomona suffered their first home defeat of the season, conceding a last-minute goal in a closely contested encounter against rivals Oughtibridge War Memorial.

The hosts made a strong start and took an early lead when Simon Bonnett reacted quickest inside the penalty area, finishing via the crossbar. However, the advantage was short-lived, as Oughtibridge responded within five minutes, breaking through Pomona’s defence and levelling the score with a composed finish.

Pomona struggled to create clear opportunities thereafter, particularly lacking precision in the final third. Oughtibridge began to assert control in midfield, generating several chances through well-timed through balls for their forwards, though both sides went into the interval level at 1–1.

The second half saw Pomona dominate possession and territory, but their attacking play continued to be undermined by poor delivery in key moments. They were made to pay when Oughtibridge took the lead, converting a well-struck free kick awarded following a contentious foul on the edge of the area.

There was further frustration for the home side as an Oughtibridge player, already booked, avoided additional punishment for subsequent fouls and a handball incident.

Pomona pressed relentlessly in search of an equaliser, with Jason Allsebrook coming close on two occasions, striking the crossbar with long-range efforts. Their persistence was rewarded seven minutes from time when Andrew Thompson met an Allsebrook cross with a glancing header to bring the scores level.

Despite their second-half dominance, Pomona were ultimately undone in the final minute. Pushing forward in search of a winner, they were caught on the counterattack. A cross-field pass found the previously cautioned midfielder, who calmly finished one-on-one with the goalkeeper to secure victory for the visitors.

Pomona will look to respond next Saturday when they travel to face Sheffield FC.

Pomona FC 3–0 Dronfield Town

Pomona FC strengthened their push for a top-four finish with an assured 3–0 victory over Dronfield Town at the Jubilee.

The home side controlled large periods of the contest, and it always felt as though the opening goal would be pivotal. Despite their dominance in the first half, Pomona were repeatedly denied by a lack of precision in the final third. An early opportunity saw Simon Bonnett combine effectively with winger Simon Yeadon, who broke through on goal, only to be denied by an excellent save from the Dronfield goalkeeper.

Pomona continued to press and came close again just before the interval. Yeadon turned provider on this occasion, delivering a cross into the penalty area that found Stephen Logan, whose effort across goal narrowly missed the target.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Pomona applying sustained pressure in search of the breakthrough. Their well-organised defence, marshalled superbly by captain and man of the match Mark Tyler, ensured that Dronfield’s attacking efforts were quickly neutralised and frequently turned into counter-attacks.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 64th minute in somewhat fortunate circumstances. A ricochet off a Dronfield defender fell kindly to Yeadon on the right, and he made no mistake, driving into the area before finishing confidently one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Just two minutes later, Pomona doubled their lead, with Andy Thompson both initiating and finishing a well-worked move following a goalmouth scramble.

Pomona sealed the victory ten minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty after Pete Hoult was fouled in the area. With the regular penalty takers no longer on the pitch, a midfielder Robert Gandy stepped up and calmly converted to make it 3–0.

Pomona return to action in two weeks time, when they host Oughtibridge War Memorial at the Jubilee on Saturday 2nd May.

This afternoon, Pomona host Dronfield Town at the Jubilee as they look to strengthen their push for a top-four finish.

The hosts will be keen to avoid a repeat of the reverse fixture, which saw them suffer a 4–2 defeat. However, Pomona can draw confidence from their dominant 5–1 victory over Dronfield in the cup back in December.

Kick-off at the Jubilee is scheduled for 3:00pm.

Pomona FC 1–1 Elsecar

Pomona FC were held to a 1–1 draw at the Jubilee in what proved to be a stern test against an Elsecar side also pushing for a top-four finish. Nevertheless, it was a performance full of positives that the home side can take encouragement from.

Pomona began the match brightly, immediately asserting themselves and applying early pressure on the visitors. Their proactive start paid dividends in the 15th minute with a well-worked goal that epitomised their approach. Simon Bonnett’s relentless work rate forced a defensive error, allowing Simon Yeadon to capitalise. The winger reacted quickest to his own header, drove into the penalty area, and finished confidently at the near post to give Pomona a deserved lead.

Buoyed by the opener, Pomona continued to control proceedings and created further opportunities to extend their advantage. However, as in the reverse fixture, they were undone by a set piece. A free kick conceded in their own half wasn’t dealt with, and after failing to clear the second ball, it fell kindly to an Elsecar attacker who converted to bring the visitors level.

The second half developed into a scrappy and stop-start contest, punctuated by frequent fouls and a growing physical edge. While Pomona’s rhythm suffered, they still fashioned chances to regain the lead. James Illingworth and Pete Hoult both came close, while Illingworth also saw a strong penalty appeal waved away late in the game.

Defensively, Pomona showed resilience under pressure. Despite carrying knocks, the back line stood firm. Joe Hackworthy produced a crucial goal-line clearance that proved as valuable as a goal, while left-back Stephen Logan made an outstanding last-ditch tackle to deny Elsecar’s main attacking threat. Goalkeeper Brad Swift delivered an excellent performance, making several important saves to ensure the scores remained level.

Pomona will look to build on this result next Saturday when they return to the Jubilee to host Dronfield Town.
