Great Britain Students Ice Hockey

Great Britain Students Ice Hockey Teams compete across a variety of UK venues to support match experience and compete against NIHL and WNIHL teams in addition to international teams.

Great Britain Students is the national programme for university students to compete against other national university sides, including competing at the bi-annual FISU World University Games. Supporting the development of the best athletes through a dual career pathway, we deliver bi monthly training camps all year round alongside university studies for both our mens and womens teams. Camps operate from our base at Ice Sheffield delivering on and off ice sessions alongside other services through an experienced multi-disciplinary team of support staff.

Great Britain Students, alongside the BUIHA, are excited to announce that the GBS mens ice hockey team have qualified for the FISU Winter Universiade in Changchun, China in January 2027 as part of the BUCS delegation 🇬🇧

Our womens team has unfortunately missed out on qualification, currently provisionally placed on reserve.

We’re delighted to share the appointment of Michael Szollosy as Head Coach of the Great Britain Students Women’s Team

Michael has been a long-standing member of university ice hockey and GBS, most recently leading the Men’s Team as Head Coach and working with players at Sheffield Bears. His experience and passion for developing the women’s game with Sheffield Shadows brings valuable perspective, energy, and ambition for a future full of potential.

We’re excited to welcome Michael back to GBS as he takes on this new role in the women’s programme🇬🇧

We’re delighted to share the appointment of Lewis Jones as Head Coach of the Great Britain Students Men’s Team.

Lewis is a familiar face to many, having previously supported the men’s team as Assistant Coach and currently serving as an Assistant Coach with the Sheffield Steeldogs. His passion for the game and dedication to supporting players make him a valuable asset to the programme, and we’re excited to welcome him back to GBS in his new role.

GB Students and the BUIHA wish to share that Ryan Rathbone will be departing his post within the programme.

On behalf of the GBS Students staff and players past and present, we wish to take this time to thank Ryan for all of his dedication and contributions over the several years of service both as Programme Lead and Women’s Head Coach.

Ryan led the GB Students delegation to three FISU Winter World University Games in; Almaty Kazakhstan in 2017, Lake Placid USA 2023 and Torino Italy in 2025.

We appreciate the time and efforts Ryan contributed during their tenure and wish them the best in their future endeavours within the sport and the wider hockey community.

As GBS move forward, our focus remains on supporting our team and continuing to deliver the best programme possible developing both a pathway within the sport for development of student athletes as well as delivering a high performance programme.

GB Students will have further staffing announcements later this week.
