Things I love about teaching yoga

🔻The privilege of sharing an ancient lifestyle philosophy that is still just as relevant today as it was during its conception over 5000 years ago. I wonder how the OG Yogis coped without blocks, straps and Lululemon pants?

🔺 I care about people a lot, and teaching yoga is a very enjoyable means of expressing this care. Really, it makes my heart swell seeing everyone resting in savasana at peace with themselves, with the world. It’s a beautiful thing.

🔻 Teaching yoga stimulates my creativity. I love reflecting on different class themes working with the seasons, lunar cycles, planetary influences and nature. Mother Nature is the best teacher of all and I’m very grateful for her inspiration. Some students have told me that my classes have helped them to reconnect with nature again and that makes me very happy.

🔺Teaching Yoga means being an eternal student of yoga. I am very grateful to be a student and have immense gratitude and love for my teachers who inspire me daily. I’ve had a personal practice for 20+ years now and the practice still keeps evolving.. Different insights land differently like the way light moves through the trees, sometimes it flashes across your nose and sometimes it shimmers in your heart.

🔻 Meeting new people. Teaching has really helped me to get to know my local community better and I feel more woven into the tapestry of our lovely town, Shaftesbury. I’ve met some wonderful new people through teaching and many of them, well all of them have become wonderful friends! Someone said once “If you want to make new friends and get to know your local community better, teach yoga- it’s a great way of getting to know likeminded people” and it’s true, I feel very fortunate to have experienced this..

Debating whether or not to share the things I find challenging about teaching yoga?! Pls comment if you want the dirt too lol!

Jokes apart I really feel so grateful for the teaching, for the students, for the space, for the inspiration.. Even when flickers of self doubt bubble up kind reviews like this one from Roberta mean more than words could ever say 🫶

Sometimes, when life feels overwhelming and we have too much on our plate we can wind up feeling unsupported and undervalued. This week in the yoga shed we will be practicing our yoga as a means of fully participating in the multiple means of support within us and around us. To feel the limbs supporting the trunk, the movement of the arms supporting the inhale, how our forward bend supports the exhale, how the spine supports all our movement, how the body feels entirely supported by the breath.. As we deepen into the body and start to recognise the body as a self sustaining system of support we can feel the support of the earth beneath us, the vast expanse of the sky above us, the support of the sun, the trees.. Everything around us, giving, giving… We can then rest the body in the awareness that it is residing in a system of complete support.. That there is no “me against the world.” There is only everything arising as one.

Sweet sweet breath 🌬️

I was feeling overwhelmed with my personal practice last week, the medical recommendation of not practicing inversions literally turned my personal and professional relationship with yoga on its head. I can’t remember if I came up with this line or someone else did but sometimes we need to see things from upside down to see them the right way up.. The clarity and insight that has descended has revealed to me and reminded me of the simplicity and potent beauty of the breath and its ability to completely change the colour of our internal landscape, bringing such coherence to the heart, body and mind. This morning Andy gave the most exquisite teaching of the ujaii breath, I sat with my eyes closed enjoying waves of bliss rolling in and out of my body.. How the slight constriction in the throat massages and soothes all the little branches of the vagus nerve that gather around the throat.. How it leads us to such a peaceful place within…

So this week, we are dedicating our yoga to the ujaii breath and really feeling into it with depth.

Can’t wait to see you here and have a good breathe together.

Such a beautiful evening of yoga, sound + sauna in the stunning gardens at Pythouse last night.. Celebrating a fresh new week and a fresh new month as the fresh rain fell.. Afterwards we warmed up in the sauna complete with rosemary oil diffusing in the steam- absolute paradise.. Can’t wait to get back and do it again in a month!

Thanks for having us Sophia 🌸🌸🌸

Hi friends

Ganesh here with a friendly message just to say that even though the full blue moon felt a bit intense please trust that everything is okay.. Trust the strong, steady feet of the elephants clearing the way forwards…

Ganesh would also like to remind me regs to please book your yoga classes if you haven’t managed to do so yet.. I believe there are lots of spaces open tomorrow at 10am (please come if you can 🙏) and Friday morning at 11am too… May our yoga, like the strong, steady feet of the elephants be a means to smoothing and clearing the path forwards..

“It should not be forgotten that in the deep wisdom of yoga it is well understood that the transmission / activation and realisation of the state of kundalini comes from no technique or effort. But comes from being with and loving the company of a friend who is in the state of yoga. This asana is called ‘Upasana” which means sitting closely to the one who is shining-in relationship with- no more than a friend no less than a friend. In this relationship all techniques spontaneously happen, all pranas flow in their own intelligence, movement and beauty that is freely given”

~

Wishing my dear friend and teacher Mark a very happy birthday. Thank you for everything ♥️
