Sometime “getting forward” isn’t actually getting forward.

I had an enjoyable coaching session with

At first, he felt like he was pressing forwards well…but the video showed a small movement across his stumps with his front foot. The movement also took him too close to the ball and made contact less effective.

So we stripped things back:

1. Bobble feeds hitting straight in the ‘V’
2. “No foot movement drill” to feel weight transfer instead of stepping across.
3. Front pad removed to exaggerate staying balanced and letting the ball come to him.
4. Small tweaks to his back lift and separation to help the hands work freely through the ball.

Sometimes the biggest improvements come from doing less, not more.

Small change, big difference.

Lucy was over striding slightly, which meant she was reaching for the ball and losing some control on contact.

By waiting a fraction longer, she was able to stay balanced and hit through the ball with much more power.

Really good progress!

I’ve been working with for about a year now.

A quick session before the season starts. Nothing fancy, just getting a feel for the ball again and building rhythm through the ‘v’

Nice to see things click into place quickly.

Simple work, done well.

A few weeks of hard work paying off for

More balanced, better decisions and starting to access different scoring areas.

Quality finish with the sweep!

Different players. Same principles.

Working with Bob here on generating power to hit through the leg side. Not by forcing it, but by creating a stable base and rotating around it.

Side-on work then straight into game scenarios:
New to the crease
Increasing tempo
Spin
Left-arm over

Adapting skill, not just repeating drills.

Amelia naturally wants to hit the ball hard.
That’s not something to coach out of her. It just needs organising.

We focused on balance, a more effective contact point and letting the ball come to her.

Same intent.
Very different outcome.

The benefit of 1-2-1 coaching means you can work on small technical changes. I’ve been working with a player who wanted to build more consistency into her bowling. She much prefers batting over bowling, but wanted to work hard on improving this area of her game.

Working with 10 year old Amelia. She loves to hit the ball but, after the first session it was clear to see she wasn’t as balanced as she could be at point of contact. This also affects her bat path and rotating her hips too early.

Our latest session focussed on balance. We did lots of catching and balance games before she picked up the bat. Learning to understand how her body works is just as important as being able to hit lots of shots.

Amelia was more successful in hitting the ball hard and along the ground, keeping more balanced at point of contact. Well done Amelia!

An enjoyable session with a young player.

We started with a focus on technical skills and tactical awareness against spin bowling.

We finished the session with some scenarios. Could he score boundaries and choose effective options when put under pressure?

How do you design batting practice so it actually transfers to the game?

In a recent session with a small group of Year 8 boys, I explored how we might develop tactical precision under pressure, particularly around boundary hitting and strike rotation.

Using an idea I’d observed in a women’s pathway session at Surrey County Cricket Club, we introduced a simple “scenario wheel”.

Players rolled a dice to determine the situation they faced.
For example:
• find a boundary option on the off side
• access a short leg-side boundary
• rotate strike with leg-side fielders back
• manage a field with mid-on and mid-off back

The aim wasn’t just ex*****on, it was decision-making.

We spent time discussing:
• individual high-percentage scoring options
• how players could use the crease to change angles
• when wrist work allowed access to different areas

What stood out was how quickly players began to connect field, option, and intent.

It reinforced a simple idea:
constraints don’t just challenge players, they help reveal their thinking.

Still plenty to refine, but an interesting way of moving practice a little closer to the demands of the game.

How are others designing practice to develop decision-making rather than just technique?
