Four Borders players entered the Edinburgh Congress last weekend: Kelso’s Keith Aitchison entered the Major, while three Selkirk players (John Moore, Maurice Richards and Sam Cornwell) entered the Bishops section. All four played well, with Keith in particular scoring above his grading.

The event was held in the Hibs Supporters Club, and we will also post three photos from the weekend (taken by John Moore).

It's not quite the end of the season, but nonetheless we've been looking at the live grades. If things stay the same (and it could be a big IF) this is how we'll be lining up next season. Some good performances... and some disappointments. Here goes:

Firstly, last week there was two games were Nick Dunne defeated Tam Wylie and John Moore beat Steve Carter.

Last night, there was a huge result, where one of the favourites to win the Championship this year Nick Dunne was sensationally beaten by Alex Brown. An excellent result for Alex against Nick, who's record since joining the club speaks volumes of his ability.

This now gives Mark Gardiner the slight edge in retaining the title.

Chess keeps you going!

Meet ‘the Doctor,’ a centenarian chess hustler who turned 103 last December. He claims to have been born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, though that may be stretching things a little, considering the monarchy disappeared in 1918 😅

For decades, he has been one of the familiar faces at the chess tables in the southwest corner of Washington Square Park. He still plays every day, from mid-morning until late in the evening. ‘I am always up for a game, but I can’t play rapid chess,’ he says with disarming humility.

The chess world is full of characters so extraordinary that, if you encountered them in fiction, you would probably think the author had gone too far.
