It is with great sadness that we share the news that Glen Swain, a long-standing and much-loved member of Seething Flying Club, has passed away.
While we don’t know the exact year Glen first joined the club, what is beyond doubt is that he was a truly treasured member for many decades. In recognition of his contribution and long association with the airfield, Glen was made an Honorary Social Member earlier this year, an honour that was richly deserved.
Glen was instrumental in the refurbishment of the flight simulator and spent countless happy hours in the sim room, patiently showing members how it worked and enjoying it himself. Until quite recently, he was still able to climb the stairs to the sim room, watching on and soaking up the atmosphere that he loved so much.
Aviation was at the heart of Glen’s life. He loved flying with many club members and, even at the age of 86, still happily went flying in the back seat of my Long-EZ. A true aviation enthusiast and pilot, his passion for flying never left him. The fact that Glen had once held a PPL was always evident when he flew, the instincts and understanding were still very much there.
Glen celebrated his 93rd birthday in September, surrounded by members of the SAGA Club. With the help and kindness of fellow members, he was still able to join us on Wednesdays, and his sons, Andy and Matt, regularly brought him along on Sundays, something that meant a great deal to him.
Glen will be especially missed by Greg and Dianne, with whom he had grown very close over the years. In earlier times, Glen particularly enjoyed flying with Greg in his Jodel, creating memories that will be fondly remembered.
Very sadly, Glen’s declining health has taken him from us. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him at Seething, not just for his knowledge and love of aviation, but for his warmth, enthusiasm, and presence around the airfield.
A club member has kindly placed a wreath at the memorial in his honour.
Rest in peace, Glen. You will be greatly missed
