Velo Vintage

Velo Vintage Friends of Albert "Time to cycle, take tea, converse and dress with style." We have returned to pastimes. Further details on our website at www.velovintage.co.uk

A period that allow us to reflect, laugh and enjoy the gentle art of conversation with friends and to take time to enjoy the delights of a Devon cream tea in the afternoon or perhaps a locally brewed ale in the evening. Dressed comfortably in our tweeds or vintage attire we travel along the lanes and cycle paths on works of art with two wheels that we affectionately call bicycles. Our first 'occas

We haven't posted for some considerable time, however small gatherings of Albert do occasionally take place and Christmas is one that we always try and get together. Yesterday was a top day out and somehow we managed to dodge the showers.

Merry Christmas one and all.

The Friends of Albert had a truly outstanding time on Saturday. We gathered at The Bicton Inn, a truly magnificent hostelry in the heart of the resort. Hot mince pies topped with Devon clotted cream and nourishment for the adventure that awaited us. Conversations extended, Dutch courage consumed, it was time to set off in gale force winds to the Jurassic Coast. Many of our steeds were quite ancient, although it has to be said, not Jurassic.

Our progress to Orcombe Point, was more akin to an elaborate fleet of sailing vessels as we enjoyed stupendous progress on the downwind leg. Once the sandstone cliffs had been reached, it was very clear that little progress would be possible without some level of refuelling. This was amply achieved by imbibing in a fine mulled cider of Albert's, circa 2022 vintage.

We braced ourselves, for the inevitable and unavoidable challenge of cycling into a Westerly wind, charged with sand. Locals exclaimed that the likes of such a wind have not been seen or felt for many a generation.

Leading the reluctant peloton was Sebastian Cope on his penny farthing (not the most aerodynamic), followed by a variety of vintage bicycles including trikes, tandems and a butchers bike, all mounted by white knuckled, yet determined riders.. After what seemed like weeks, we all eventually made it to the safety of Spoken in the Strand. I am pleased to report that all survived.

Rather Short Notice, however ………
Ladies and Gentlemen, here are the details, such as they are, for a little festive gathering on Saturday 9th December in the year of our Lord 2023. It is all very informal, nothing really organised as such, except for a time to meet, followed by a gentle cycle along the seafront, perhaps stopping from time to time to converse and imbibe in a refreshment or two to sustain us. Albert will be present.
We will be gathering at the fine hostelry of The Bicton Inn, which is located in Bicton Street, Exmouth. Some of you may well have been here before in a previous life, and indeed, in considerable numbers. The following postcode may help you to locate this splendid watering hole, if this is your first time – EX8 2RU. It will be a frustrating task if you decide to drive and park your motorised transportation adjacent to the Bicton Inn. If we may advise, we would strongly encourage you to park elsewhere and cycle to said establishment.
Please be good enough to arrive for about 11.00 o’clock, just after might be good, as we believe the doors open at 11:00 am. We shall then take some time to converse, catch up with past friends, greet new riders and discuss the days options available to us, depending on the meteorological conditions that prevail at the time.
You may find it useful to bring with you a receptacle for consuming a warm beverage for later on in the ride. We shall say no more at this stage and let your imagination run riot with the endless possibilities that demand the requirement of said vessel.
We trust that you will all dress in a style that befits such a gathering, and it is with unrestrained excitement that Albert and his close friends, find ourselves on a winter ride that encourages the donning of tweed. Festive enhancements of a tasteful manner will of course be encouraged.
As mentioned, nothing is organised as such, however we will delight in your company and the conversation that inevitably will be stimulated by such a gathering.
Albert very much looks forward to seeing you all at this festive time of year.
Toodle Pip!
