I had my eye on the wrong measure of success.

And it cost me without me even realising.

The distraction doesn’t look like distraction. It looks like progress. It looks like building something. It keeps you busy enough that you don’t notice what’s slipping.

But the experience suffered. The thing that actually matters what someone feels when they’re in the room with you that took a back seat.

The shift came when I stopped measuring the wrong things and got back to the only thing that’s ever actually made a difference.

I thought becoming a dad would mean having less time.

What I didn’t expect was that it would make me better at almost everything else.

It forced me to become intentional with where I put my energy. I stopped trying to give everything equal attention and started focusing on the things that create the biggest impact.

The biggest lesson?

The quality of your presence will always matter more than the quantity of your time.

Whether that’s in the gym, at work, with your partner, your kids or your mates, people don’t need more of your time they need more of you.

This is one of the biggest lessons fatherhood has taught me, and it’s changed the way I train, lead and live.

I don’t believe in work-life balance.

Balance implies the two are competing. That time given to one is time stolen from the other. That I’m supposed to keep them neatly separated, equal weight on a scale that never quite levels out.

Knowing which moment needs me and showing up fully when it does. Some days that’s an early morning on the gym floor, completely locked in. Some days it’s being home before dinner, phone down, actually present with my family.

The measure isn’t hours. It’s attention. It’s intention.

The people I coach and the people I love don’t need a version of me that’s been carefully rationed between two worlds.

They need me when I’m there to actually be there.

Presence isn’t something you split evenly. It’s something you direct.

So that’s what I work on every day. Not balance. Not separation.

Just the discipline to know where I’m needed and the focus to give that moment everything it’s got.

This Men’s Health Week, I asked three mates one simple question:

“What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in each other?”

The answers weren’t about six packs, PBs or bigger arms.

They spoke about confidence. About becoming a better dad. A better partner, better friend and man who carries himself differently.

What struck me most wasn’t what they said…

It was how rarely they’d actually said it to each other.

As men, we notice the growth. We see when someone is standing taller, handling life better, smiling more, or carrying less weight on their shoulders.

But we rarely tell them.

Training gives you more than a stronger body.

It gives you structure when life feels chaotic.

Discipline when motivation disappears.

Confidence that spills into every area of your life.

A community that reminds you you’re not doing it alone.

The strongest men I know aren’t just stronger in the gym.

Maybe this Men’s Health Week, don’t just think it.

Tell your mate. He probably needs to hear it more than you realise.

Most people wait until they have the perfect goal before they start.

But what if having no goal is actually your biggest advantage?

When you walk in with zero expectations you become open to everything. No tunnel vision. No disappointment. No measuring every session against some fixed destination.
Just presence. Just progress.

Jamie joined the club with no plan, no target, no idea what he was getting himself into. He just knew one thing, he needed to do something.

The goals? They found him. Once he was in the building, in the culture, around the right people everything else took care of itself.

Action is the catalyst. Not the plan.

Most people are waiting for clarity before they commit. But clarity comes after you move not before.

You don’t need a goal to start. You just need to know that the environment you’re about to step into is going to change you.

The rest? That’s just what happens when you show up.

He spent years doing it alone.

Independent. Closed off. Keeping things to himself.

But growth starts when you stop asking “what if this isn’t for me?” and start asking “what happens if I give this a real chance?”

He wasn’t sure this would be the right fit.

But he tried first.

And that decision changed more than his training.

He started pushing harder. Getting uncomfortable. Trying things he’d normally avoid. Opening up and leaning into the process.

Now he understands something many men miss…

Community matters.

Connection matters.

And sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes from stepping into something you never thought you needed.
