We had a lovely afternoon for bowling yesterday at Lesbury in a friendly match. Both clubs had 2 rinks and 2 triples out with all the games finishing fairly close with the green bowling very well, Seahouses narrowly taking the overall score 64-60. Afterwards retiring to the clubhouse for a spot of tea, a pooled buffet provided by our hosts and plenty of conversation.
We look forward to welcoming them to Seahouses in July for the return fixture, they’ve promised to bring the sunshine with them!

A picture sent in by Phil of a club badges that belonged to his Grandad George Hayes. George and Norah Hayes were members in the 90’s and are well remembered by the people who we’re playing at the time. John told me George played at lead in his rink in the North Northumberland league and he was “bloody good”.

Season update NNL and Triples League:

With the top 2 positions already decided in the NNL we traveled to Wooler with a chance of overtaking them to finish 3rd. Despite a spirited performance from our bowlers the home side took the maximum 8 points winning the match 70-50, we ended the season 4th.
Amble won 6-2 at home to Alnwick (51-45) and Lesbury won 6-2 away at Rothbury (56-49) a result that saw them jump above Alnwick into 5th place in the final table.

Tuesday 19th of July saw the start of the Triples League and we had a home match against Lesbury. Every game was close across the green wit 5 ends to play with Seahouses ahead in 2 games, down in 1 and level in 1. We managed to hold on to win 3 games to 1 and take the match 72-68 overall collecting 8 points from the 10.
Alnwick lost 4-6 at home to Wooler (67-70)
Amble lost 0-10 at home to Rothbury (55-104)

Tuesday 26th of July we had a trip to Rothbury which ended 9-1 in Rothbury’s favour 71-55 overall but could have been so different.
Our triple on rink 1 had a slow start and were never able to catch back losing 12-22.
On rink 2 we picked up a 4 count on the 15th end to draw level at 12 each but Rothbury picked up 4 shots to our 2 in the next 5 ends on the final end we dropped a 3 losing 15-19.
On rink 3 another tight match played out trailing 11-12 on 15 ends we went into the final end leading 15-14 but Rothbury picked up a 2 to take the game 15-16.
On rink 4 we trailed 8-14 with 5 to play but won each of those ends picking up 6 shots to draw 14 each.
Lesbury won 6-4 at home to Alnwick (69-61)
Wooler won 6-4 at home to Amble despite the visitors taking the overall match score (64-66)

Tuesday 2nd August we were at home to Wooler taking 8 points and the match 80-62.
On rink 1 Seahouses had a strong lead at halfway 17-5 but a superb fight back saw Wooler take the game 19-23.
On rink 2 another strong start for Seahouses leading 17-4 at halfway and maintaining that to win 26-14.
On rink 3 we held a slender lead 7-5 at halfway and were able to get a run of ends between the 16th-19th picking up 8 shots taking the game 18-10.
On rink 4 we trailed 8-9 at halfway in a tight match that went into the last end 15 each and went down to the final bowl with the Wooler skip hitting the jack into the ditch but her bowl traveled a bit too far away in the ditch leaving Seahouses with a 2 count on the green to win 17-15.
Amble won 8-2 at home to Alnwick (59-57)
Rothbury won 10-0 at home to Lesbury (94-54)

Final update from this busy week of bowling. On Thursday our friends from Lesbury visited with 16 players for a friendly match, the weather stayed nice and the wind dropped and a lovely night of bowling was had. Afterwards we retired to the hall to partake in the pooled supper provided by the Seahouses bowlers.

After the spider 15 players for each team took to green in triples to play 18 ends. After 10 ends the HVP’s held a 9 shot lead across the green, the visitors experience showed over the remaining 8 ends with them adding to their lead to win the match, also winning 4 of the 5 games.
Afterwards the players and spectators retired to the hall for refreshments and presentation of top rink prizes. (HVP’s top rink Nick Grifton, Michael Grant and Kevin Wylie, Seahouses top rink Stephen Copeland, Jim Monksfield and Stephen Keay.)
It’s great to be able to hold these big social games again and we look forward to the HVP’s visit next season.the

A busy week at the bowling green started with the visit of the Northumberland Honorary Vice President’s Association. The game started with a spider, each player spreads out around the green and they all bowl a single bowl at the same time towards the jack in the centre of the green. HVP member Jeff Armstrong finished closest when all bowls came to rest and collected a bottle of whiskey as a prize, £30 was raised for the HVP’s charity The Great North East Air Ambulance. (My bowl ran about 5 yards past the jack without ever hitting any other bowl 🤣)
