First game back
***Match Report***
After a long hot summer with seemingly endless holidays, an almost full house attended training. It seemed like an eternity since weve had everyone together. The training session was superb, the girls looked sharpe and the break had everyone raring to go. We looked ready for the new season.
It was an early start and any hopes of a lie in after the first few days back at school were dashed. The girls were peeled from their pits, dressed accordingly and arrived promptly for warmup. The sun was blazing down on a lush green pitch. The scene was set.
The Ravens were on the front foot from the off. After winning the toss the ball was launched into the opposing half where it pretty much stayed the entire half. The opposition today were a well established division 1 side but they struggled to contain The Ravens as we pressed, probed and pushed our way around the pitch. Shots were peppering in early on from Libby, Sienna and Lucy but the opposition keeper stood strong.
It looked like it was going to take something special to beat this keeper. Well we have that in our toolbox and she goes by the name Sienna! A loose ball was picked up by Sienna on the halfway after some solid defensive work. She strode forwards past the midfield and as she approached the box, and coaches about to shout ‘don’t shoot from there’, she did! The ball whistled beyond the keeper who barely moved as that nice, crisp nestling of the net was heard for the first time this season. What a strike!! Sienna asked at the end of the game ‘where did it go in, I blinked’!! Top corner, Sienna, top corner!! 1-0 and we probably deserved more. A very good first half performance and a well deserved 1-0 lead at half time.
Not much to improve really from the first half. Maybe just a little more belief.
The midfield and strikers were being rotated a bit more than usual. This will happen more as girls are learning and adapting to extra versatility.
The Ravens continued to dominate the game. The opposition tightened things up and their work rate had stepped up a level from the first half. The girls continued to work hard with Lucy leading from the front. Mid way through the first half Lucy picked up a loose ball on the halfway line and set off on another Haaland like breakaway. Lucy doesn’t need skill, she used brute force, aggression and sheer determination to get past the midfield and defence before slotting past a helpless keeper. 2-0 and Lucy thoroughly deserved that goal.
The third followed quickly after. Libby whipped in a lovely corner which somehow eluded everyone. Niamh was waiting at the back stick and recovered the ball. After winning her battle Niamh laid off Sienna who had now repositioned herself on the edge of the box. A couple of touches inside and another bullet fired, ‘top bins’ from outside the area!! She’s started her own goal of the season campaign again!! 3-0.
To be fair, that was the game won but the opponents didn’t give up. They pressed forward and in a rare attack forced Scarlett into an excellent full length save. The striker was quickest to react and tapped into an empty net. 3-1. A consolidation goal as The Ravens professionally saw out the game as 3-1 victors.
An excellent start to the season, and for now, top of the league!! Girl of the game today was Lucy. She won trainer of the week on Wednesday and carried that new found enthusiasm into today’s game. She was first to arrive, 15 minutes before the meeting time and was clearly up for this from the off. Her enthusiasm spread through the team and is showing real leadership at the start of this season. Her performance today was on another level. She looks fit, strong, determined and a couple of inches taller!! Her level of aggression was perfect. Not too much for the ref to intervene but too much for the opposition team to handle. At times she single-handedly carried the team forward and scored a well deserved goal. Lucy inspired everyone this week from training, pre game and throughout the game. A real leader’s performance all week and epitomised what we want this season, Fitter, Faster, Stronger!
