The North Yorkshire Cup.
Round Three. Saturday the 18th of April 2026.
Scarborough Squash Academy:
What a weekend!

A packed house, a fabulous atmosphere, some fantastic Squash from every age group from start to finish. What an amazing day in which the budding young stars of the future were on display. And what an outstanding display it was!

The whole day was played in the true spirit of the game. Friendship, friendly rivalry, sportsmanship, fun and pure entertainment.
The fact that there were no arguments, disputes, incidents, and the day ran so smoothly was a testament and credit to the players, the referees, the organisers, the spectators, and the parents.

There were no winners and losers on the day as everyone was a winner, and all of the players should be exceptionally proud of what they are achieving.

There are lots of photos. Please feel free to download and share. They are reminders of an absolutely brilliant day!

And so on to Stillington Squash Club on the 13th of June for round four. Which undoubtedly will be as successful as the previous three!

What a week! Scarborough Squash Academy is reaching new heights for so many different reasons and the future is bright!

After a fantastic fund raising event for the Veterans' Foundation which was amazingly well attended, and supported by the club members, Barons Fitness, Scarborough Rugby Union Football Club, and clubs from around the region. The focus shifted to the leagues, and in particular to Scarborough third team, who made their debut in the York and District Squash league this season.

The team was assembled with a view to combining youth and experience, seasoned players with our young guns from the junior academy, who have done some amazing work and shown incredible improvement over the past year or two.

The team have been nothing short of sensational over their first season in county competition, and put in some outstanding performances against some strong opposition.
The team were never out of the top spots from beginning to end this season, and went into a crunch, winner takes all, deciding playoff against York RI, with a ten point advantage, in the final match of the league.

The team consisting of arguably our strongest third team squad of maciej Gruca, Xavi Gledhill, Scott McCabe, Andy Hutchings, and Zaccaria Alessio, managed to pull off a fantastic result away from home, to bring the York and District Squash, Eddie Fisher Trophy back to Scarborough for the first time in history.
Congratulations to all of the third team squad:
Names include: Steve Robinson, Zeke Gledhill, Jim Mowat, Jonny Williams, Josh Soulsby, and 11 year old Josh Mowat, who was there to collect the trophy for his efforts at such a young age, and who remained undefeated in all of his matches at senior level. What an achievement for one so young!
To everyone in the third team and those who made some amazing contributions, supporting their campaign. Congratulations on a job well done and for all of the effort and hard work!

Our juniors have played a major part in the success of the teams at Scarborough this season, with Ben Squires achieving some superb results and outstanding performances in the first team, Harry Amstell, and Zaccaria Alessio, playing brilliantly in the second and third teams, and newcomer Josh Mowat, our youngest ever senior player in history, in the third team!

Meanwhile on the previous Saturday, Josh "the pocket rocket" Mowat claimed yet another trophy to add to his already considerable collection, by winning the Hallamshire Tennis & Squash Club junior Open 2026 U13 boys competition.
At the same time, our "Duracell battery", Marcel Adamczak, finished an amazing, though not so surprising, Runner Up in the boys U11 event!
He like Josh, continues to make rapid improvement and he may well take his place, playing for the seniors in the none too distant future!

The great news is there are already quite a number of new and brilliant young junior players coming through the ranks of the academy at present, and the future of Squash in Scarborough is looking exceptionally bright, with an ever increasing participation at junior level, and a thriving Squash community.

The next event at Scarborough Squash Academy will be round three of the North Yorkshire Junior Cup, which promises to be another amazing competition and takes place on Saturday the 18th of April 2026
The club junior Championships will also be held around this period, which is an opportunity to really put our Junior Academy on show, and showcase what they are achieving!
For more information about our activities at Scarborough Squash Academy, please call Barons Fitness Scarborough, or Lew Marsden on 0754 721 7170

A personal thank you from Lew Marsden to all who took part on the day and contributed to The Scarborough Squash Academy fund raising event, held on Saturday the 21 of February 2026, in support of the Veterans' Foundation.

As a twenty two year veteran myself, having served between 1980 - 2003, I cannot express my gratitude to all who took part, made donations, and assisted in raising funds for this charity, which is very dear to my heart.

The money raised is truly invaluable. Every penny will be well spent, and will make a difference to our veterans, our heroes, and their families in so many ways.

Many of our veterans endure a day to day struggle for survival, and to cope with life after suffering life-changing injuries, and mental disabilities, such as PTSD which is a silent killer.
Many cannot make the adjustment back into civilian life after many years of service in the Armed forces, many end up living on the streets, many end up tragically taking their own lives.
Many receive little or no support, and rely almost entirely on donations from charities for their survival.

So a truly heartfelt thank you to everyone for your incredible support. Donations are still being made online and in collection boxes at Scarborough Rugby Union Football Club, and Barons Fitness, so the donations will remain open for the immediate future.

You can also continue to give your support, by signing up for the Veterans Foundation Lottery. (See the link below). In which their are some fabulous prizes on offer, and again the funds raised are put to incredible use.
So thank you again, there are no words to describe how grateful I am for your support at this time.
I received a lovely letter from the Veterans Foundation this week showing their appreciation for everything that has been achieved, expressing their congratulations, and utmost gratitude to everyone who took part and made donations.
Congratulations and exceptional well done to all.
Kind regards.
Lew Marsden.

Fundraising event, in support of the Veterans Foundation.
Saturday the 21st of February 2026
An incredible day in Scarborough!

What an unbelievable day!
A 6 am start. Some incredible games, lots of fun. Lots of prizes to give away, and lots of money collected for this more than deserving charity!

The day started with a few games of first to 115!
Yes, 115! The first two games featured Jim Mowat v Maciej Gruca, which finished 115 - 108 to Jim Mowat after one and a half hours!

The second game on court featured David Sample v Jessica Mowat and finished 115 - 97 in favour of David.

Meanwhile on the other courts the early bird players played matches, three quarters, and fives. Keeping the courts flowing throughout the morning.
The courts and spectator area filled up dramatically from around 9 am, and remained full for the remainder of the day.

There were some exceptionally tired bodies by the end of the day, but everyone had a smile on their faces after a very satisfying, but exhausting day.

The big takeaway from the day was seeing so many generations of players on the courts at the same time!
Players as young as 5 years old on court with our most senior players, well into their eighties, and every age in between! It was an incredible sight to behold and our Squash Academy is so lucky to have such a broad demographic!
There were many games labelled "battle of the ages" in which the youngest took on the seniors and both gave an amazing account of themselves, producing some brilliant and extremely entertaining games!

It was wonderful to see many players from other clubs arrive to support our day too. Special thank you to Thornton-le-Dale Squash Club and WHITBY SQUASH CLUB - RUFC in particular for your support.

Many thanks to This Is The Coast - Local Radio For The Yorkshire Coast who gave updates throughout the event, Scarborough News Sport, England Squash, and TalkTVUK for your invaluable support.

Head coach at Scarborough Squash Academy: Lew Marsden kindly donated prizes for a prize draw on the day including a Squash Racket, a t-shirt signed by three times world champion, Nick Matthew, (many thanks to Nick Matthew for kindly donating one of his shirts!), Squash balls, grips, headbands, sweatbands, protective glasses, and Squash ball Keyrings, along with lots of goodies to eat including chocolate, squashies, Haribo's, Skittles, Starbursts, and Easter eggs.

However the main objective of the day was to raise funds for the Veterans' Foundation, which were donated in cash on the day as well as online donations, which have been made over the previous couple of weeks and, indeed are still going in!

There were some huge donations made by various sources, some up to £500 and many into the hundreds of pounds.
Although the total cannot be exactly ascertained, due to the online donations, the figure is estimated to be in the region of around 3 - 3500 pounds!
A massive heartfelt thank you to everyone who made a donation, and to everyone who participated on the day.
Words cannot express just how much your donations go to changing the lives of our veterans and ex-service personnel.

The Veterans Foundation do an absolutely incredible job, working tirelessly to assist our veterans through the many and complex problems many have to endure every day.

Our very own coach at Scarborough Squash Academy: Lew Marsden is a 22 year veteran himself, and as such this cause is especially dear to his heart. Lew cannot express the gratitude and appreciation for everything each and everyone of those who contributed, or participated has achieved.

This was a truly remarkable day in the history of squash in Scarborough, and an unforgettable day to remember.
Scarborough Rugby Union Football Club, Barons Fitness, and the Squash Academy have staged many fundraising events for various causes in the past, and will no doubt continue to raise funds well into the future.

So!
A bright and early start tomorrow at 6 pm for our fundraising day, in support of the Veterans Foundation.

If you have the time, please feel free to come along and participate at any time throughout the day.

We will be playing squash all day until 6 pm, and there will be a lot of games, fun competitions, some teaching for anyone who hasn't played squash before, and coaching sessions for existing players of all ages.

Many of our club members and junior academy players will be participating all day, and we will hopefully see a few from the local community and other clubs from throughout the region.

Parents are invited to get on the courts with their kids, and we may well have a bit of friendly family competition on the day, so bring some indoor sports shoes, and we will provide everything else required, so anyone can have a go.

There will be a few spot prizes on offer, and we have had a great response from TV, radio, social media, and the local press.
This is the coast. Radio will be broadcasting regularly from 8 am. tomorrow morning, and Talk TV, Yorkshire, will be providing updates, one of which should be going out at some point today.

So, if you can come along, please respond to the poll provided on this page, or simply come along on the day.

Finally. A massive and truly heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed to this event, no matter how great or small the contribution, whether in terms of time spent or donations made. No matter how great or small, every single contribution or participation is so greatly appreciated, and it all goes towards making such a huge difference to the lives of so many who have given their all for this country!

Let's have a wonderful day tomorrow and see you up and about with the larks tomorrow morning 😊😴❤️🙏👏🎊
