So yesterday saw us travel across to York to play Evolution Soccer, and with holidays and injuries taking hold, the team travelled with a bare squad of 11. Between that and the upturn in Evo’s results since the group stage, we knew this would be a different challenge.
With the boys being asked to play in different positions in a makeshift line-up, the first quarter went as expected a little scrappy, giving possession away far too cheaply, and trying to play and force long balls.
However, from the first break onwards, the boys were the better team right until the end of the game. Every single one of them gave 100% effort, covering every blade of grass on what was a big pitch. To match the hard work, the boys started implementing what we’ve been working on in training keeping the ball well, recycling when needed, and then building up new attacks. As a result, we created several very good chances, which eventually led to a great run from Declan to cross, Dan then laid the ball into the path of Will, who stroked it into the net past the keeper.
The game continued in the same fashion, with the boys working hard and creating chance after chance, just not able to get that second goal to give us a cushion. With a couple of strange offside decisions, the game went right to the death.
The game finished 1–0, with the boys getting a well-deserved win to top off what had been a great week in training.
Absolutely any of the boys could have got Man of the Match yesterday, but special shouts to:
• Will, in the middle of the park, who never stopped and was rewarded early on with his goal;
• Dan, who helped the team by playing up top and never stopped running both in and out of possession, causing endless problems; and
• Dec, playing out of position out wide again, up and down all game, causing Evo no end of problems.
On to the next one at home next week as we build on this!
