The vagaries of our weather!

A week ago we had to postpone a cup match due to rain. Today the feeling was that we might not be able, due to the heat, to play a full 18 ends in the League match which pitted the league leaders - Sleights Blue against the bottom club - South Cliff Vikings. In the end, thanks to our proximity to the sea, we were fortunate to play the full 18 ends - unlike some inland clubs who played a restricted number of ends.

The match saw South Cliff give a good account to themselves - John S’s rink won 17-11 and we lost narrowly on Mel & Rosie’s rinks. The aggregate score was a rare tie 42 shots each. The outcome, in points, was 3 to the Vikings and 5 to Sleights Blue. After the match all enjoyed some excellent home cooked cakes courtesy of Mel.

First Aid Course
It was our pleasure to welcome First Aid First firstaidfirst.biz to our club to deliver an informative and entertaining first aid awareness course. The presentations were excellent and members commented about how much they had valued the session. Our thanks to Simon and Frances for a thorough and first class delivery of how we can keep each other safe. Thank you also to Wendy for the most perfect lunch afterwards.

5 rinks each of 4 players (social & full members) faced the touring Kerry Bowling Club from mid Wales. The weather remained kind and the teams enjoyed a very good match which saw Kerry victorious - scoring an aggregate of 104, almost twice the South Cliff score. Following the match, Kerry presented the Club with a plaque and players enjoyed refreshments courtesy of Wendy S and Mel H with James hosting the raffle draw. All had enjoyed the afternoon’s bowling and good conversation

Celebrating Marathon Success

Social Bowling on Saturday saw some 24 bowlers enjoy the sunshine, good company and some excellent bowling. At the tea break they congratulated member Sue Rowlands with cake and bubbly. As the oldest London Marathon participant from Scarborough, she had recently completed the 26 plus miles at the age of 73!

The Club offers Social Bowling on Wednesday and Saturday and no previous experience is required. Coaching and woods are available and it is an opportunity for good conversation and exercise. A good number of members who started as Social Bowlers have made the step up to playing in the leagues.

2026 Season starts

Some 26 members assembled on a blustery and very cool afternoon. New Chairman Alan welcomed all and thanked the members who had worked throughout the closed season preparing the green and surrounds. He also referenced the forthcoming First Aid course, the first friendly of the season and the practice sessions from Monday & Wednesday ahead of the League fixtures starting.

Members played two one hour matches separated by tea, coffee and cake made by Mel. The final outcome saw the team of Chris T, Maria S & Tom R win by one shot from Mike G's team and were presented with a suitable chocolate reward!

Despite the cold and wind all seemed to have enjoyed the first venture on the Green. New member Lynne spoke of how much she had enjoyed the afternoon - the support, instruction and good humour of the members was much appreciated

Last Friendly of the Season

On Wednesday we played a friendly match against Pershore Bowling Club, James M writes - we had a great game with plenty of laughs and fun. Although we lost ….. well let’s just say by a few shots 64/92 , the games were played in great spirits. At the end of the match and tea we were given a lovely sing song by the visitors, and there was a b***y prize for their losing rink , they all looked so fetching in there wigs!

Sincere thanks to Pauline V for all her work in organising the Friendlies this year, to Pauline T for sorting the raffle and to the kitchen for the tea coffee and cakes provided.

We were blessed by the weather as the rain stopped and never started again! Thanks to all the members who turned out to play the last friendly of this season and here’s hoping for a great season in 2026.

Scarborough Open 1st - 6th September

A week of bowling, shared between South Cliff & Scalby saw some excellent matches attracting bowlers from as far afield as Nottingham, Middlesbrough, York and Hull in addition to players from many local clubs. Matches were played in the Men’s, Ladies’ Singles and Pairs, Mixed Pairs and Mixed Triples. A great deal of work had been undertaken prior to the event preparing the Greens, gardens and catering provision at both clubs. Many thanks to Pauline T who was on the organisation committee along with Stewart S from Scalby. A great deal of the administration was undertaken by Graham S a former chair of South Cliff who has moved out of the area.

Apart from some torrential rain on Thursday afternoon, necessitating the last matches
of the day to be held over until Friday, the weather was reasonable - if a little chilly on finals Saturday. Thanks go to Tony, Mel, John S, John R, Vernon and Derek Gi for their work on setting up/removing the equipment and Pauline C for the bench cleaning. John S & Mel varnished the benches and Sue & John tidied up areas of the gardens ahead of the event.

In the Clubhouse, a great deal of work was undertaken in the catering area headed by Wendy S, supported by James and numerous other members. Members delivered some super home baking and thanks got to all who contributed to keeping the bowlers and many spectators fed and watered. Bill dealt with the money for food, raffles etc, Tom & Heather the raffle and many thanks to all members who contributed to the raffle & tombola prizes. The onerous task of inputing the scores and keeping everyone up to speed was tackled excellently by Chair - Joyce and any calls for clarification on the Green were dealt with by Umpire Pauline V.

The order for the Finals day was not straightforward in that several players had got through to more than one final and there was the matter of having to play one of the Ladies Pairs & Men’s Pairs semis on the morning of the Finals day.

The finals saw some superb bowling and the outcome in a number of the matches was in doubt for many ends. Tournament Chairman Alwyn Baron presented the trophies to the winners.

Whilst they did not win a trophy, a number of South Cliff players enjoyed success in the event with:
Bob Golland & Tom Robinson - reaching the semis of Men’s Pairs
Pauline Veitch & Colin Pattison - reaching the semis of Mixed Pairs
Pauline Turner - reaching the semis of the Ladies Singles

Aussie Pairs Finals Day

South Cliff held its second final of the week. The occasion, well supported by spectators, saw Sleights Red play Filey South Dene in the Cup and Seamer faced Thornton le Dale in the Plate - the second time in the week they had played each other for a trophy. Unlike the Vets where the outcome was decided by shots difference, the Aussie Pairs is decided on rinks won. The bowling was enjoyed by all and there were some excellent matches. At the half-way point, Filey South Dene were up 2-1 and Thornton le Dale similarly placed in the Plate. After the 16 ends Thornton le Dale ran out winners 3 rinks to 0. In the Cup the situation saw the scores level at 1-1 with rink 1 still playing and after 12 ends Filey were 11-6 up. The remaining 4 rinks saw the Filey pair pull ahead to finish 17-6 up, Filey South Dene winning 2-1.

Chairman of the Aussie Pairs, Edwin Smith presented the teams with their trophies and also presented Seamer with the trophy for winning the league. He thanked South Cliff for holding the event and providing refreshments for players and the 40 plus spectators. Special thanks to members Wendy S, Pauline V, Joyce, Pam, Wendy H & Mel H, John S & R for all their hard work during the day.

Vets League Finals Day

On a cloudy and initially drizzly afternoon, Thornton le Dale played Seamer in the Cup and Cayton faced Pickering in the Shield.

In the Cup, Seamer took an early lead to be 12 shots up after 6 ends. They maintained their lead, albeit with Thornton le Dale reducing it to 10 shots at the halfway point thanks to their players on rink 6 who had established a lead. With 4 ends to play, Seamer still had a lead of 10 shots but with 2 ends to go the lead had been reduced to 4 shots. The remaining two ends saw Thornton le Dale score 10 shots - winning overall by 6 shots
Seamer 44 shots, Thornton le Dale 50 shots
Rink 4 18-13
Rink 5 16-15
Rink 6 10-22
In the Shield it was a similar story initially with Cayton leading 21-12 after 6 ends. By the halfway point they led by 11, but rink 3 of Pickering had a healthy lead and essentially kept them in the match. The gap narrowed to 5 shots with 4 ends remaining. With 2 ends the play, Pickering had reduced the gap to 3 shots. On the last end with the skips to play the gap was down to 2 shots. In the end Pickering could not bridge the gap and Cayton won 47-45
Rink 1 16-9
Rink 2 22-11
Rink 3 9-25

The event organisers thanked the Club for hosting the afternoon and providing all the players and spectators with refreshments. Special thanks to members Wendy S, Pauline T & V, Joyce, John S & R for all their hard work during the day.

Thanks also to the League Chairman, Richard Thompson, for presenting the trophies.

The Club is also hosting the Aussie Pairs Cup & Plate on Thursday

Club Competition Finals Weekend

Saturday morning saw the Men’s Pairs final which pitted very experienced Colin P & Alan T against Tony M & Derek Gi. In the opinion of most of the spectators this was an absorbing and excellent match . The underdogs took an early 5-0 lead and after 6 ends were 8-6 up. After 12 ends Alan & Colin had a 6 shot lead. The remaining 6 ends were absorbing for the spectators with Tony & Derek 1 shot adrift with 4 ends to play. Colin & Alan with 2 ends to play were 3 ahead. With the final end to play the scores were tied at 18 each. On the last end, Tony delivered some exceptional woods leaving Derek to put in four blockers which stopped Colin from disrupting the head. Tony & Derek won their first trophy 20-18. This was an excellent advert for the sport.

A couple of hours later, Debs F and Richard M competed for the Social Members Cup and Derek & Alan faced each other in the Men’s singles. Both matches required the target of 21 points to gain victory. In the Social Members Cup, Debs was in excellent form, establishing an early lead which she did not relinquish and she reached the 21 points after 15 ends. Meanwhile Derek & Alan played a very close final with scores being tied a12-12 after 15 ends. Gradually Derek gained an advantage and after 19 ends was 2 points from victory. Alan took the next 2 ends to enter end 22 with the score at 19-16. On the 22nd end Derek achieved the required 2 points, ending the day with 2 trophies.

On Sunday the Ladies Pairs was played in the morning and the Aussie Pairs after lunch. The Ladies Pairs pitched Pauline T & Christine P against Maria S and Debs F. After 10 ends Pauline & Chris were ahead by some 12 shots at 14-2. The next four ends saw Debs & Maria work their way back to 17-12. At the end of 18 ends Pauline & Chris ran out winners by 18-12. The Aussie Pairs featured two cup winners - Pauline T & Tony M against Maria S & James M. Pauline & Tony established an early lead being 12-6 up at the halfway stage. They ran out worthy winners 19-8.

Chair Joyce Clayton presented the trophies and we thank Pauline T & Bill E for organising the event.
