Sandy Town Council is pleased to announce that having passed a full RoSPA inspection, Sandy’s new skatepark, at Sunderland Road Recreation Ground is open and ready for use. Today the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Town Clerk and Outdoor Team Leader met with representatives of Maverick Skateparks, the contractor who designed and built the park, for the official handover.

We are also excited to share that a Skate Jam to officially launch the new skatepark will be held on Saturday 24th September, from 12pm – 4pm. More details on this event will be published soon.

In the meantime, the Council hopes that people across the community will enjoy using this wonderful new facility. We would ask users to walk on the path, rather than on the earth around the skatepark, to allow the ground to settle and the grass to grow.

Our thanks go to all the sponsors who helped to make this project possible: Central Bedfordshire Council, Frontier, GeeJay Chemicals Ltd., Grand Union Housing Group, Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund, The Police and Crime Commissioner for Bedfordshire and The Rotary Club of Sandy.

Thanks also go to Robert Lacey for these great photos of some of the first people to try out the new skatepark.

On 9th February, Sandy Town Council held its third drop-in design consultation session for the new skatepark to be built at Sunderland Road Recreation Ground. At this session, a designer from Maverick Skateparks, the Council’s appointed contractor, shared concept images for a new design with skaters and scooter riders. Attendees responded very positively to the new design, and requested one minor change to a grind rail, which has been implemented by the Maverick team.

Following a good amount of engagement from our roller sport community during the design process, the Council is now pleased to share the final design for Sandy’s new skatepark. The design, developed by listening to feedback from residents through online and in-person consultations, combines 18 features to create an interesting and varied facility, with opportunities and challenges for people of all abilities.

In further exciting news, last month, local housing provider Grand Union Housing Group awarded a £4,500 donation to the Sandy Skatepark Project.

This builds on works Grand Union has recently undertaken alongside Central Bedfordshire Council to improve other public spaces in Sandy, through the creation of new parking spaces and improving planting in residential areas. It’s part of Grand Union’s aim to build stronger communities. Karen Nicholson, Community Investment Manager at Grand Union said: “As a member of the Community Investment team, the varied nature of our day jobs is a real perk of what we do. It’s been a privilege to support Central Bedfordshire Council on this project. It will help improve the lives of skaters living nearby.”

The current total of funds raised, through a variety of grants, local business donations and developer contributions, stands at approximately £115,000. Fundraising activities are ongoing and the Skatepark Project anticipates an additional award of £32,000 within the next few weeks.

Check back on this page for more news on the Skatepark Project’s progress soon.

New Concept Design for Sandy Skatepark 🛹🚲🛴

Sandy Skatepark Project’s appointed contractor, Maverick Skateparks, have further developed the potential design for Sandy’s new skate facility, based on feedback from prospective users in the initial design survey and at the recent Pride of Place event. The updated design has been produced by listening to the needs of local riders of all kinds: skateboard, scooter and BMX. It’s hoped that this vision better reflects their aspirations for the new skatepark.

Maverick explained the concepts behind the new design: “This revised design for Sandy reflects the strong desire for bowls and the many requests for a pump track, by fusing those elements into a cohesive skatepark. A central wide mini ramp with bowled end can be sessioned as part of the main park, or independently as a mini ramp, while the orbital pump track can still operate as a separate zone. The outer pump track has gentle slopes rolling into it making it accessible to all and leads to 'flyouts', which are also hipped into the mini ramp. On the outside is a bank to ledge providing some street-style opportunities. The central space of the pump track has a small volcano/box. There are a multitude of flowing lines around the space and we hope that this rather unique design will appeal to a wide range of users.”

Sandy Skatepark Project will continue to work with Maverick to develop this design, based on feedback from the community. We would like to hold more face-to-face engagement sessions in January to discuss the updated vision for the skatepark and work towards a final design.
