Just started a training regime using a heart rate monitor, and found the standard 220 minus your age formula just doesn't cut it. At 55 max heart rate would be 165 . When you train at a 75percent rate gives you 123 bmp. Which was a very slow jog. So decided to go out and find my max hr.only way to do that ...push it to the max. Found a moderate hill and ran up it 3 times. At the end of the 3rd effort. With legs like jelly, and lungs on fire. Took my heart rate. 200bmp. So recalculated training zones, and all going along nicely now. So don't trust the formulas we are all different, only way if you are physically able to is get out there and push to your max. Be warned though. It ain't easy.

After running a marathon it should be 3 weeks of rest. Just done one, and got to admit it's murder, wonder if a bit of try might be ok .

Remember when training hard to allow time for recovery, it is as much a part of training as the training itself, and without it the body will eventually stall and progress will stop, so allow two days of recovery a week and watch your progress continue.
