🌊 Drowning Prevention Week is coming to an end, but the message matters all summer long.

Open water can be unpredictable, and situations can change in seconds, knowing how to respond safely could make all the difference

If someone’s in trouble, remember:
📞 Phone for help
🛟 Float to stay safe
🪢 Throw something they can grab
❌ Don’t jump in

Knowing what to do could save a mate’s life.

🌊 Drowning Prevention Week

As temperatures rise, so do the risks.

During the recent UK heatwave, at least 15 people lost their lives in water-related incidents, many of them children and teenagers. Hot weather may feel inviting, but open water can be deadly, with cold-water shock and hidden dangers catching people off guard.

Young people are especially at risk. In England alone, 41% of child drowning deaths are among teenagers aged 13-17, with many incidents happening in inland open water like rivers and lakes. These are often situations where confidence, dares, or “just one jump” turn tragic.

One dare.
One jump.
One “it’ll be fine.”
That’s all it takes.

Be the mate who says: Nah, not worth it.

⚡️ DON’T BE AFRAID OF AN AED ⚡️

One of the biggest myths I hear is:

❌ “I wouldn’t know how to use a defibrillator.”

The truth is, you don’t need to be a healthcare professional.

✅ Open the AED.
✅ Press the ON button.
✅ Listen to the instructions.

The AED will talk you through every step.

It will tell you:
• Where to place the pads.
• When to stand clear.
• If a shock is needed.
• When to continue CPR.

In fact, an AED will NOT deliver a shock unless it detects a shockable heart rhythm, so you cannot accidentally shock someone who doesn’t need it.

When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, every minute matters. Early CPR and early defibrillation can dramatically increase the chances of survival.

💚 Remember:
If you’re brave enough to press the ON button, the AED will do the rest.

You don’t need confidence.
You don’t need qualifications.
You just need to act.

Because doing something is always better than doing nothing.

🚨 CPR MYTH BUSTER 🚨

Would you know how hard and how fast to push?

✅ Compression Depth:
Push 5–6 cm deep – that’s about the width of the SHORT side of a standard bank card.

✅ Compression Rate:
Aim for 100–120 compressions per minute.

🎵 A simple way to keep the correct rhythm:
Think of “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees.

“Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive…”

Every second counts when someone’s heart stops.

💚 Push hard.
💚 Push fast.
💚 Don’t stop until help arrives or an AED tells you what to do.

Of course there is more to learn - Have you ever had CPR training?
