Losing your sense of purpose ⭐ Read part 1 first ⭐

Women spend decades being the glue, the planner, the carer, the emotional anchor and when kids move on, the silence can feel uncomfortable, the silence deafening

Purpose has to now be rebuilt. And it's the perfect time to put you first and think about what you want now

Not knowing what you’re “allowed” to want

Many women have never been asked what they want. Not really. Not without guilt.

So when midlife brings space to think, the question “What do I want next?” can feel very big and overwhelming, because it’s brand new. Life has been so busy for so many years, that you've never had chance to think about what you want.

You are important, so put your needs first now

Thinking it’s too late to start again

New job.
New training.
New qualification.
New direction.

Women tell themselves they’re too old, too behind, too late, but the truth is, midlife is the perfect time to do what you want to do

You're not starting from scratch.

You’re wiser, clearer, and far less willing to waste time on things that don’t matter.

Finally turning the spotlight on yoursel and for the first time, you’re asking:

What do I enjoy
What energises me
What do I want my life to feel like now

This isn’t selfish, this is identity rebuilding and it’s powerful

The reframe every midlife woman needs is..

You’re not losing yourself, you’re meeting yourself and maybe for the first time ever.

Midlife isn’t the end of your identity, it’s the beginning of your chosen one and could be absolutely amazing if you have the bravery to just go for it

Why do so many women struggle with identity in midlife?

Have you hit your 40s or 50s and suddenly thought “I don’t know who I am anymore”

You’re not alone.

Midlife is the first time many women finally look up from decades of doing, giving, supporting, organising… and realise they’ve never actually had space to ask:

Who am I now and who do I want to be next?

Here’s why this identity wobble happens, and why I don't call it a crisis, I call it, for many women, a reawakening

The job that no longer fits

For years, work was about stability, routine, money or fitting around childcare, then one day you realise:

I’ve outgrown this.

Not because you’ve failed, but because you’ve evolved. You're a different person now and it no longer feeds your passion. You're bored, you want something more, you want to be mentally stimulated.

Midlife is when women start asking bigger questions about purpose, impact, creativity, and fulfilment. So give yourself time and space to think about what inspires you now, what have you always wanted to do and look into it.

The empty nest shift

When the kids don’t need you in the same way and the role you’ve lived in for 18+ years suddenly changes.

You’re proud of them… but also thinking: If I’m not needed every second, who am I anymore?

This is a huge emotional recalibration, especially if you were a full time parent. And it’s normal. It's almost like being made redundant. You would be empathetic to someone who suddenly didn't have a job. So what's the difference?

There isn't one......

I thought most midlife women wanted advice on weight loss. But I was surprised to read that most midlife women tend to want advice in these 5 big areas 🤔

Identity
Health
Emotional wellbeing
Relationships
Purpose

These themes show up consistently across research and they map directly onto what women report feeling in their 40s–60s

I concentrate a lot of my posts on health in midlife, but I'd like to focus a little on these other areas over the next few weeks.

I know that I have most definitely struggled with all of these topics over the past 5 years, so I'd like to offer some help to others going through the madness of midlife.

The core things midlife women want advice about and what we can look at more closely...

⭐ Identity & “Who am I now?”

Many women feel lost or uncertain as roles change (kids leaving home, career shifts, retirement, caring for parents)
Studies show midlife brings identity confusion and reevaluation.

⭐ Stress, overwhelm & emotional wellbeing

Midlife brings increased responsibilities and pressure, often leading to anxiety, low self-esteem, and emotional overload.

⭐ Relationships & connection

Many women reassess marriages, friendships, and boundaries. Relationship strain or desire for deeper connection is common

⭐ Purpose, direction & “Is this all there is?”

Women often question life choices and want guidance on reinvention, new goals, and meaningful change.

So look out over the next few weeks for posts on these areas.

If you only change ONE thing in midlife, make it this - lower your stress. Then the weight will naturally follow.

Nobody listens to this advice.

Everyone is desperate for a quick fix, fast diet, fool proof plan, gold plated idea....but the truth in midlife is that lowering your stress is the key to everything. Full stop.

Because nothing; not steps, not calorie, running, counting, fasting, crazy workouts work properly when cortisol is running the show🔥

It's all counter productive if your stress is high.

So stop, breathe and put bringing your stress levels down to the top of your to do list.

Why stress is the real blocker to weight loss

When cortisol stays high, your body holds onto fat (especially around your middle)

Your cravings for sugar, fat and alcohol go up. Your blood sugar goes up and down, which slows down and halts fat burning mode

Your sleep gets tougher and with little sleep your cravings for sugar, fat and alcohol go up. See the pattern.....

Your metabolism slows to “survival mode" and not slow and consistent fat burning mode.

What happens when you bring that stress down?

You're calmer, you make better decisions; food, drink and life, you sleep better which means your sugar and fat cravings diminish. And your body is not running on high cortisol and holding onto fat like it's gold!

So, it's simple. Bring your cortisol down and everything will fall into place naturally

My Top Tips

Walking as meditation. Slow, steady, rhythmic movement tells your nervous system “you’re safe”

Reducing alcohol, it spikes cortisol at 2am and disrupts fat‑burning sleep.

Cutting back sugar. Stabilising blood sugar = stabilising stress hormones. Helps your body to regulate itself

Breath-led movement — Pilates and strength work slows the heart rate and brings cortisol down.

Weight management in midlife starts with stress management. You need to calm your system, so your body can let go.
