MANAGER’S MATCH REPORT
Saltash United Women 1st Team versus St Agnes 1st Team
Yesterday saw us make the long trip to St Agnes on an extremely hot afternoon, played on a pitch that was rock hard and very lively underfoot. With several players away on holiday or unavailable, it was a great opportunity to see the strength and depth within our squad, and to give players valuable minutes in slightly unfamiliar positions as we continue working on our game plan and match model ahead of the new season in just a couple of weeks.
I was very impressed with St Agnes. They have a young, energetic and enthusiastic squad that showed great resilience and determination throughout the match, defending very well for large periods of the game.
For me personally, it was really pleasing to hand three or four debuts to players at the club. We are working hard to build a sustainable team and a clear pathway here at Saltash, and I am genuinely pleased with the rebuild that is taking shape. Yesterday was the perfect chance for everyone to show exactly what they are capable of, against a St Agnes side that I believe will be very competitive in their league this season.
Despite the extreme heat, it was excellent to get solid minutes into the legs of our senior players as we build match fitness ahead of the campaign. While the result is never the most important thing in pre-season, it was satisfying to eventually break the deadlock through a well worked routine from a corner kick.
We also took the opportunity to practice playing with ten players for around fifteen minutes, resting one player carrying a minor knock. It was an extremely useful exercise for us to work on our shape and discipline when down a player.
All in all, it was a really worthwhile afternoon. We gained good minutes, learned valuable lessons, and found plenty of positives to take into the weeks ahead.
We would like to wish Saint Agnes all the very best for their season ahead!
