⚽ OUR GOALKEEPER PATHWAY

Within the IFA Goalkeeper Programme, players are placed within one of two development groups:

πŸ”Ή Development Group
Designed for goalkeepers who are developing the core foundations of the position and looking to improve their confidence, technique and game understanding.

πŸ”Ή Academy Group
A more advanced training environment for goalkeepers demonstrating strong technical ability, commitment and game understanding, operating at a higher intensity and level of detail.

Both groups work from the same structured goalkeeping syllabus and cover the same key principles. However, sessions are delivered at an age and ability-appropriate level to ensure every goalkeeper is challenged and supported in the right environment.

Goalkeepers are continually assessed throughout the season, with opportunities to move between groups as they progress and develop.

πŸ₯… WHAT WE WORK ON

βœ… Handling & Shot Stopping
βœ… Footwork & Movement Patterns
βœ… Diving Techniques
βœ… 1v1 Situations
βœ… Crossing & Aerial Play
βœ… Distribution & Playing Out From The Back
βœ… Positioning & Decision Making
βœ… Communication & Leadership
βœ… Match-Based Goalkeeping Scenarios

At IFA, our focus is on long-term individual player development. Goalkeepers benefit from specialist coaching, regular feedback, fixtures and additional development opportunities throughout the season.

As part of the wider IFA pathway, players also have opportunities to participate in fixtures, festivals and development events throughout the year. The academy has an official association with Plymouth Argyle Academy and regularly provides opportunities for suitable players to attend emerging talent and academy-related events as they progress through the pathway.

Players attending trials should already have some playing experience and a genuine enthusiasm to learn and improve in the goalkeeping position.

Places are limited and early registration is recommended.

We are delighted to welcome Tom Burstow to the Independent Football Academy as an Assistant Goalkeeper Coach.

Tom joins the IFA goalkeeping department with a strong footballing background, having spent many years involved in the game as both a player and coach. Throughout his playing career, he has experienced a variety of football environments, including training and development opportunities with both Plymouth Argyle and Truro City, alongside competing within the men’s game. These experiences have provided him with valuable insight into the standards, commitment and mentality required to perform and develop within the modern game.

Through his involvement with football, Tom has developed a strong understanding of the technical, tactical and psychological demands of the goalkeeping position. His experiences within academy and senior football environments have helped shape a coaching philosophy centred around hard work, attention to detail, confidence building and long-term player development.

Tom currently holds his FA coaching qualifications and is committed to continuing his professional development through further FA coaching and specialist goalkeeping awards. He is passionate about helping young goalkeepers improve their technical ability, decision-making and understanding of the game, whilst creating a positive, challenging and supportive learning environment in which players can thrive.

As part of the IFA goalkeeping department, Tom will work alongside our coaching team to support the delivery of our structured goalkeeper development programme, helping to provide aspiring goalkeepers with high-quality coaching and guidance as they progress through the pathway.

We are delighted to welcome Tom to the coaching team and look forward to supporting his continued development as a coach whilst he helps develop and inspire the next generation of goalkeepers within the Independent Football Academy.
