Match report

Saltash vs Launceston

A return fixture this one against a team we narrowly lost to just before Xmas 2023. This time 17 of our lads turned up to play against a home side depleted a little by injury and illness but we had some notable absences as well.

So on to the game. And what a cracking match this one turned out to be! The home side kicked off and after a few early exchanges Launceston managed to break through for the first score. 5-0 to them. In the past our lads would normally drop a little but not today. We immediately surged upfield with good rucking and support play then spun it out wide for big Ruben to power up the right side and crash over for our first score. 5 all! Our lads seemed really buoyed by this and it led to more superb defensive work across the team with good turn over secured and excellent use of the ball. This led to another attacking opportunity which big Ruben scored and was smart enough to get close to the posts. Jay standing in for Monty on the tee made it 12-5! Our lads with their tails up now continued to pressurise the home team and more great team play allowed Jay to surge through with a storming run to score another try. 17-5! We let one slip by right at half time but went into the break 17-10 in front!

Second half started and the home side came out strong to put more pressure on our boys. They scored a decent try to make it 17-15! Getting too tight now! Then we got into a phase where our lads secured good ball and continued to push at Launceston but some minor penalties and slightly generous advantages given to the home side at 3 scrums allowed the opposition to create a platform and despite great defensive work we gave up another try. 20-17 to Launceston! Now in the past energy would have sapped out of our lads legs but they knew by playing to their strengths they could create more chances to score. And boy did the team believe they could win this! Good ruck ball and bang! out to the backs and a pass out wide allowed Nathan to blast up the outside and score a superb try. The kick went over and the win was ours! 24-20 to Saltash!

Today was our best performance so far this season without any shadow of a doubt. Loads of positives to take away. Much better shape across the whole team, better support for running players, better tackling, superb pressing in defence and excellent use of our speed in the backs. I could go on! Lots of players could put their claim on Man of the Match today but the coaches decided on their two picks. In the forwards we awarded Josh MOTM for his efforts as he was relentless in the breakdown and put in great tackles across the field. We also awarded another MOTM to Oliver Smith in the backs for his great tackling and immense performance for only his second match. Well done to both!

On a final note from the coaches and parents who came to support the boys we are all immensely proud of the whole team who raised their game today and showed they can push any team they play. Onwards and upwards.

U14s Saltash vs Liskeard

Here’s the match report from the last fixture of 2023!
Saltash welcomed 20 players from just down the road at Liskeard. And despite the opposition boasting some U15s playing down our own 20 players (boosted by 4 new eager lads) looked an even match for them.

On with game. The first half kicked off and by crikey did our lads get going quickly. Some fantastic rucking and quick hands by our forwards got the ball out to our backs and before you know it big Ruben made a classic run down the wing and surged over in the corner. First blood Saltash. Liskeard then tried to come back at us but our forwards would not yield and pushed them back. The likes of Freddy, Jay, Logan and Jake punched big holes in the defence of Liskeard creating space for more attacks. 2 more tries came our way without reply. However, some persistent work by the opposition coughed up a penalty which they put over for their first points. This urged our boys on and yet again brilliant work by our forward pack allows us to score again. Half time score 22-3

Second half came around and our boys could sense more scores to be had as the opposition started wilting under our quick scrums, quick rucking and immense support play. This allowed our backs to get running using more width and great pace to grab another couple of tries. A small lapse in focus allowed Liskeards gigantic prop to run through he middle and then touch down for their first score. A talking to our boys under the posts about making the tackles and keeping up the excellent work stirred Saltash back into action again. Great running and support from our backs and forwards allowed both sunny Ruben and Jay to grab another brace of tries. Final score Saltash 44 Liskeard 10

I won’t dwell on the negatives other than to say our very own Rob who was reffing the game stood up professionally to some pretty challenging behaviour from the Liskeard players.

I would like to mention the four new players of Olli, Charlie, Max and David all of who put in a massive effort for their first game. And a big pat on the back goes to our Man of the Match Freddy for his surging runs, great rucking and support play. And finally from all the coaches we would like to thank all of the team for a huge effort today for working very hard for each other and getting the result they deserved! Well done boys! More of the same in 2024 please!

Match report

U14s Saltash vs Bude

So despite some absences from the squad we managed the long trek up to the north coast with 15 players for a change. Last season we did really well against our hosts who are notoriously strong in the forwards and like a physical challenge. The lads all turned up and had a really good warm up and looked in positive spirits.

So to the game. With muddy conditions ball handling was always going to be difficult. The first half kicked off and after some early exchanges Bude immediately showed they were up for this game and put our lads on the back foot scoring an early try. First blood Bude. After a chat under the posts our lads tried to get a foot in the game but struggled to maintain speed and numbers at the break down causing more pressure to come back at us. Before we knew it we were on our 5 yard line. An unfortunate kick out from Saltash not helped by the conditions gifted another try to Bude. There was still hope as the lads seemed in good spirits still. However before half time we again failed to turn our possession into points and coughed up another sloppy try.

A stern talking to the lads at half time seemed to wake them up a bit. Onto the second half and after great quick ball from our forwards we got the ball out wide at last and Nathan and big Ruben did great interplay to get the ball down the wing. With good mailing from the pack big Ruben managed to reach out and dot the ball down. Dan got the kick over and it looked like we might get back in it. Sadly this did not happen. Our pack fell off the Bude forwards allowing them to crash through the middle and score another two tries. Another strong talk to the lads rallied them and again our backs combined well only for Ruben to just fall short within a whisker of the try line. With energy dropping from our pack Bude notched up another late score.

Final score Saltash 7 - Bude 34

Positives to take away were few today. However it was good to see returning players Freddy and Ruben getting stuck in and the likes of Dan kicking with confidence.

Areas to work on are pressing as a group in defence, working on the fitness of our forwards to get them challenging more for the ball throughout a match and the whole team to show better support for each other.

Man of the match today went to the new lad Charlie who showed true grit and desire to get involved and make his mark on the game. Well done to you young man.

Final points are that this team will get better and with more players returning next weekend we can see healthy competition for places in the team making the lads raise their game.

Away fixture for us this weekend. One that we do enjoy and it has nothing to do with the after match pasty’s 🫣💪🏉

Under 14s match report.

Well it was a tough day on the pitch but lots of takeaways from it!!
Still suffering from injuries and sickness 12 saltash players were supported by 3 OPO’s for an away fixture that started in sunshine and finished a bit damp!!
OPO’s started strong and scored 2 quick tries off the back of some scrappy play from both sides. The boys then started to dig a little finding good momentum in the rucks and mauls however the continued pressure from OPO’s saw another try going in against the boys. Thankfully then from a series of breakdowns where saltash were committing and giving options Saltash burst through for a try.
Monty our captain then took a blow to the knee and limped off the pitch which was a blow for the team but Dan stepped into his shoes as the captain for the side.
The second half saw some more great play, passing and work around the breakdown however the pressure from OPO’s saw a couple more try’s sneak through. Before Ben picked up a blow to his knee his high quality tackles had been noted by all and really kept the score down for OPO’s.

Man of the match went to Olly who had a blinder on the wing, taking ownership of pulling the boys out wide, making big hits and jumping to his feet and competing and then taking the ball on a few great runs.
Coaches player was Ruben who was again a menace in the breakdown and although got blown up by the ref a couple times was doing exactly what his role is about. Half time question from him was Dave I held the lad up, he wasn’t letting go of the ball and I wasn’t letting go of him but he said I had to…. I didn’t, he said but should I have?! No mate you do the right thing. With a big smile Ruben said good!!

Hopefully injured and sick players will be back next week and we will have 3 new players joining the squad so fingers crossed our days of borrowing player will be over!!

Under 14s match report

OPM 14 Saltash 29

I’m not sure if was the clocks going back, the rugby World Cup final inspiring our team or something else but this morning whilst warming up at OPMs it felt different.
The boys looked coordinated, they were in great spirits and rather than just shuffling about they just started to look like a team, warming up together, talking rugby and self motivating.
Also for the first time this season we weren’t borrowing players, we had 15 which grew to 16 half way through the match. This was great and long May this last.
OPMs began the match with a kick and suddenly we were off and after a few breakdowns seeing saltash governing, the ball came out to Ruben who bust down the wing supported by Omar. After breaking 3 tackles the offload landed in Omar’s hands who burst down from the 22 scoring the first try right out on the far side.
The rest of the quarter saw saltash retain ownership of the ball however some strong defence from OPMs saw saltash fail to break through.
Quarter 2 saw 2 try’s converted by OPMs who had brough a monster called Nikki on to the pitch who was a powerhouse runner. The boys did well to defend and their commitment in the breakdown was better than I’d seen in any other match, it was simply 2 great try’s from the opposition.
The end of Q2 saw Monty bring the boys in and between him and the coaches we fired the boys back up and heads were high.
Q3 kicks off and the boys regained ownership of the ball, when lost the forwards were all hungry to win it back and time and time again we were seeing them turning it over. Omar again recieved the ball breaking free on the wing and using his pace to get the second try out on the far side. Nearly an impossible angle Dan lined up for the kick and had the posts been straight may have just plopped over but fell inches shy. This was then followed by a break through from Nathan bursting again down the wing but managing to finish under the posts supporting Dan who quickly nailed the ball between the posts.
Q4 saw the boys flying out and ready for more, it was at this point I was convinced saltash were about to hit their first victory of the season. Breakdowns , scrums and turnovers later it was a fairly even quarter however we were suddenly in their 22 and from nowhere Logan burst through and put the ball down for saltashs 5th try.
This was close to the posts and saw our second conversion of the day from Dan.
In the dying moments Saltash we’re again midway in OPMs 22 and the ball came out lose from a breakdown. Jay standing close saw that he didn’t have time to pick it up so backed at it. Following this through he tapped it again then launched himself towards it touching the ball down for the final try of the match.

All round great work Saltash RFC U14’s 23/24 every player really put a shift in and did what your roll commands of you. Hard day choosing awards as honestly it could have gone to anyone.

Men of the matches went to Logan who just got all over the park, made some huge tackles and was breaking off the scrum at the right time and destroying the oppositions space to create any form of game play. Second went to Jay who performed excellently and showed some great inspiration around his try, made more tackles than I have seen him do in a long time and just made his presence known.

Finally a thank you to James who at the last minute stepped in to ref the match. Good decisions were made, the game flowed well and clear messages passed to the players.

Feeling like a proud coach, all the hours pay off when you see the smiles and feel the buzz of a big W.
