Salisbury Walking Football entered 2 teams into the Wiltshire over 65's League at Green Lane, Devizes on Thu 4 Jun 26.

The SALISBURY REDS started the second round of matches in second place, 2 points behind Highworth who they didn’t play last time out and 2 points ahead of third placed Swindon.

Their target was not to lose to Highworth (TICK), not to lose to Swindon (TICK) and then with our superior goal difference to try and pick up 2 more points than Highworth (READ ON).

In the first match against Highworth we stuck steadfastly to our defensive duties and held out to the last seconds of the match when George Ryan stuck a leg out to block a shot on the goal line and got a gentle nudge from their striker causing him to stumble into the box to concede a penalty. Fortunately we had the superb Chris Brown in goal who saved the penalty which was the last kick of the game. Final score a 0-0 draw job done!

Next up were Swindon and again a great defensive team effort and some great saves from Chris B in goal earned us another 0-0 draw - job done again. (Highworth also drew their second match 0-0 with Salisbury Whites - so a big thank you to them!)

Third up were Melksham and this time we had a bit more freedom to move forward into attacking positions. Mark Potts intercepted a ball and glided forward to slot home the first. Dean McMillan played a ball through to Chris Patching to score the second. Dean M smashed a shot from range against the crossbar and then played a great ball through for Mark P to score his second goal. Final score a 3-0 win. (Highworth beat Calne 2-0 in their third match.)

Our fourth match was against Calne. Off to a great start. Bob Nadin smashed a shot against the post. Steve Jackson tried a shot from distance. Mark P had a shot which hit the post and it rebounded out to Dean M who slotted it away. 1-0. Later on Mark P played a lovely ball through for Dean M to score his second. A Groundhog moment nearly occurred when Mark P blocked a shot, but this time the deflection flew safely outside the post rather than into our goal like it did last month! Final score a 2-0 win.
(Highworth drew with Trowbridge 0-0 in their fourth match.)

Going in to our last match we were top of the league on goal difference as follows:
Salisbury Reds - Played 9, Points 19, GD +11
Swindon - Played 9, Points 19, GD +9
Highworth - Played 9, Points 19, GD +7

Trowbridge were our last opponents of the day and we completely dominated the game with 7 or 8 shots on goal all saved, blocked or just missing the target, restricting them to one long range shot that Chris B saved with his head!
Highworth won their last match against Swindon 2-0 so we ended the day still in second place and still two points behind Highworth with the mighty Trowbridge getting 0-0 draws against both of us.

However, after two rounds of matches we remain unbeaten, have scored 12 goals and only conceded 1 thanks in no small part to Chris Brown’s excellent 5 out of 5 clean sheets today and another great all round effort and performance from all seven in the squad, who were: Chris Brown (G), Steve Jackson (D), Bob Nadin (D & F), George Ryan (LM), Mark Potts (CM) 2 goals, 1 assist, Chris Patching (RM) 1 goal, Dean McMillan (F) 2 goals, 2 assists.

The SALISBURY WHITES started later in the day with a bye and were consequently quite drenched by the time they hit the pitch. Their first match against Highworth ended in a credible draw, with a steadfast defence frustrating the league leaders.

Trowbridge were next up and in a tight game we created chances but a combination of heavy rain and very slippy surface allowed one of their few shots to slip through Rob Nicholls close to the final whistle. With Rob N at the back and Chris Davey-McLean up front the passing game was good, but we felt robbed at the final whistle.

Swindon followed and we were well beaten 2-0. Missing a penalty didn't help as it could have levelled it to 1 all, however, we let it slip when we gave away a penalty for stepping in the area.

Melksham followed and we were much the stronger team and dominated the game. A great passing move from Paul Daniel in defence to Chris D-M allowed a killer pass through to the overlapping Paul Brewer to score a great goal. 1-0.

Last game was against Calne and an even game with Rob Sheppard at the back holding up and frustrating a very good centre forward, however, one turn and a shot late on changed another evenly balanced game. A 1-0 defeat

Given the horrible conditions it was not the easiest day but comfort from some great passing and moves and well over a dozen strong chances forcing great goalkeeping and unlucky shooting. A great all round effort and performance from all eight in the squad who were: Rob Nicholls (G), Ken Hardy, Paul Brewer, 1 goal, Dean Cresswell, Chris Davey-McLean, Paul Daniel, Rob Sheppard, Andy Jackson

KINGSLEY FEWINS IS 80.

Kings was born on 7th June 1946, 2 years, and 1 day after D Day as he is partial to pointing out. Gentle man, veteran chef, and Spurs fanatic (the only way is up Kings). He joins our illustrious band of octogenarians.

Kings, we know you have been carer in chief for Hannah as she recovers from complex knee surgery. Enjoy your upcoming holiday.

Happy birthday, and congratulations from all of your friends at Salisbury Walking Football and beyond.

Keep playing the beautiful game.

Dorchester Charity Tournament in aid of Prostrate Cancer

Salisbury Walking Football put in a team for this event at Dorchester’s FC Ground. We also had a team playing in the Hampshire FA Cup at Portsmouth the same time.

Our first game was against Dexters Select. They were a very suspiciously young, fit and organised team and we did well to negate them for the first 10 minutes.

A splendid pass from David Davidson after nutmegging the defender found George Ryan just ahead of their last defender and George R moved forward and slotted past their keeper for a great goal - only to be chalked off for apparently not walking!
We continued to hold them at bay until the 15th minute when a long range shot sneaked in and then they flattered themselves by grabbing another just before the final whistle.
Salisbury 0 Dexters Select 2

Disaster struck right at the start of the second match, our ‘international’ against Barry Town, when Giles Lewis inadvertently stepped into the area and they scored from the resulting penalty.

But there will be talk in the valleys of South Wales of Julie Freemantle the “Barry Town Dragon Slayer”. She stuck to her task of staying up as the out ball option and was played in by a long ball from George R she turned, she shot, and the ball nestled beautifully into the corner of the goal. One all.
Unfortunately, another late winner scuppered us as one of their players dribbled, twisted and physically barged his way through our defence with no sanction from the referee.
Salisbury 1 Barry Town 2

Our 3rd game we were kept in contention against Exeter Strollers when a shot from Exeter was deflected off Chris Townsend and the already diving Paul Anderson managed to twist and thrust out a hand for a spectacular save that even brought applause from the opposition.
A lovely move where Chris Patching played the ball through to Giles L who played a one-two with George R unfortunately ended with Giles’s spectacular shot smacking against the crossbar - so nearly a great goal.

Moments later a free kick from Chris P was tapped across to Giles whose shot was inches wide.

Another great ball from Chris P found George whose shot was blocked by a last ditch tackle.
Over committed in our determination to try and win this match, we were undone late on by a long ball to their lone unmarked goal hanging striker who slotted home.
Salisbury 0 Exeter Strollers 1

Last up were Weymouth Claret. We needed a win or a draw against them as they were sitting bottom of our league as we had the better goals difference.
They scored a contentious early goal where their player clearly stepped inside the area to score but the referee didn’t see it so gave the goal.
We battled hard again but this game was marred by an injury to David D where his defensive challenge left him prostrate on the ground with an injury of bruised ribs to the right side of his torso which unfortunately ended his action for the day.
Another good move saw Steve Jackson play the ball out to George who played the ball onto Giles who burst on to slot home the equaliser - only for it to be the second goal of the day to chalked off for not walking!
Salisbury 0 Weymouth Claret 1

Everyone today put in a great shift but sadly the effort and determination in the 20 minute straight through matches was disappointingly unrewarded!

We wish David a speedy recovery from his injury and the seven others in the squad will always remember that we were there the day that Julie taught Barry Town a lesson

Dexters Select and Barry Town progressed to the quarter finals where Dexters beat Sherborne 1-0 and Barry Town beat Weymouth Blue 3-0.
In the semis Dexters beat Wimborne 1-0 and Barry Town lost to Amesbury 1-4.
Amesbury then beat Dexters Select 1-0 in the final.

Hampshire FA Cup

Salisbury Walking Football took part in the Hampshire FA Cup on Sat 16 May 26. They were drawn in a group with Hawk Originals, Bracknell Town and Portsmouth.

First up were Hawks, a team we have played many times at Stoneham. We peppered their goal and the keeper made several good saves. Both sides were on three running offences and unfortunately the ref decided that we committed a fourth offence giving them a penalty. Mark Cope made a good penalty save but moments later after another save they squeezed a shot inside the post. The whistle blew almost immediately.

Our second game was against Bracknell Town, a team we’ve never played before. They were young, sharp and technically good. They beat Portsmouth 6-1 in their first game. We did well to limit them to a 2-0 win.

We had to beat Portsmouth to have any chance of progressing. We went 1-0 up with a quick free kick which Andy Jackson finished off with a low shot. A penalty was conceded when Mark C was adjudged to have touched the ball outside the area. They converted the penalty, so 1-1. A few minutes later their keeper did the same and Andy J slotted the penalty home for a 2-1 victory.

Bracknell won all their games and went through as group winners.
There were three teams on two points. Hawks and Salisbury had exactly the same goal difference, but unfortunately they went through because of their 1-0 win against us.

Bracknell went on to win the tournament beating Farnham 1-0 in the Final.

VER 70’s TOURNAMENT FRIENDLY

Salisbury Walking Football entered a team in an Over 70s Tournament Friendly at Wiltshire FA at Green Lane, Devizes on Sunday 10 May 26. This event was organised to bring together the Over 70 community and help plan the future of over 70s football as well as showcase multi-touch and 3 touch football

Four teams took part. Salisbury Whites, Calne, Trowbridge and Swindon. We played 6 games, each team played the other twice.
The first 3 games were 3 touch and the last 3 games multi-touch.

Our first game against Calne resulted with a 1-1 draw, with Jono Freemantle getting on the scoresheet. Some great goalkeeping by Rob Nicholls kept the score at 1-1.

Our second game was against Trowbridge. The team played good football and forced them to give away a penalty which unfortunately Graham Newland failed to convert. (I know how he feels, as I missed my penalty at Stoneham on Tuesday). We kept pressing and they committed 4 non-walking offences which resulted in another penalty. Jono F stepped up and slotted the ball home. A 1-0 win for us.

The third game against resulted in a 2-0 win for us after some excellent play. Not sure who scored. Probably Jono F or Graham N, but a win is a win.

The fourth game was our second game against Calne. We played some good football but were beaten 2-0, despite great goalkeeping by Rob N. This was our only defeat.

The fifth game was against Trowbridge resulting in a 0-0 draw. We created some great chances which we failed to put away.

Our final game was against Swindon. Two lovely goals from Graham N and great play gave us a 2-1 victory.

SWF, played 6, won 3, drew 2, lost 1. 11 points, Goals for 6, goals against 4.

We narrowly lost to Calne who finished 12 points.

A big thank to all SWF players, who gave up their time to take part in this event. It is appreciated and helps promote walking football in Salisbury.

A big thank you, also to the organisers, referees and all players who took part to make it an enjoyable day. It was nice to see everyone enjoying themselves and still enjoying the beautiful game at
