A few words about our wonderful Happy Hearts member Liz Gummer from our Codford class.

We are so very proud of Liz and her determination to improve her mobility and balance whilst reaffirming her trust in us.

Her fellow class members in her Codford class all think she is fantastic and so do we:

This is her journey with us in her words……

My journey with Happy Hearts

“I initially attended the Happy Hearts classes due to back, hips and balance issues. When I was unable to actively get involved with these, my Physio recommended Thai Chi classes. I was unable to stand unaided at this point; so without the ability to balance, these classes were not helping me at all.

I spoke to Salli, who encouraged me back to Happy Hearts; and I couldn’t be happier. The class is wonderful; everyone is so positive, supportive and kind. It’s a happy place to go and I truly look forward to these weekly classes.

How have I improved?
I started these classes seated; Salli has an amazing ability to manage the full class and make time to offer me seated alternatives. How she monitors and interacts with each of us is a marvel!

From being unable to stand or walk unaided; I am in a position where my back feels looser, my balance is much better, and my positive outlook is enormously improved. I can now do a slow circuit without a walking stick and return to my chair when I need it; giving me full control over my engagement in the class.

Last week Salli encouraged me to do a sassy catwalk in front of the class to demonstrate my new mobility! It felt so liberating; everyone was clapping and being so encouraging.

Salli & the class
As a teacher Salli is brilliant at her job and she has a natural empathy and ability to treat us all as individuals. People who have suffered quite serious illnesses (such as heart operations, strokes, joint replacements) attend these classes; and everyone adores her. She makes it fun and exhilarating! Nigel is a great help with the music and joins in on the circuits to keep us encouraged.

The members in the class make it extra special. People give hugs, pats on the back, physical and mental support. It’s a chance to openly discuss our ailments; providing an outlet and an ability to laugh.

It is hard to find the right words to truly explain - you have to be in the class to experience just how wonderful it is”.

Liz Gummer.

Liz rejoined Happy Hearts just after Easter this year and was awarded ‘Member of the Month’ in May… A spectacular achievement.

Happy Hearts is a sparkling antidote for those suffering from physical and psychological effects of heart or respiratory disorders, in a safe, effective, friendly and fun environment to help you get fitter and become more confident in living with and understanding your condition.

Here is our member of the month number two:

Liz Gummer
Suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis, which has got progressively worse over the last few years.

Liz was attending our Monday morning sessions for quite a few months, but her Physio and Consultant advised her not to attend but to do something more gentle such as Tai Chi, we must admit this baffled us a little as obviously her balance was not good, however who were we to argue...

Only a few months ago Liz made contact with us again with a little cry for help wondering if she could return to Happy Hearts as she missed the music and laughter, Liz clearly required a little more individual help so she then started to attend our Codford class.

When Liz arrived her condition had worsened considerably and she was now walking very slowly with a stoop and the aid of a stick, confidence in herself was very low, by now Liz was on a Buprenorphine Patch to manage her pain.

Liz did all her exercises from a chair with a minimal amount of walking and certainly couldn't get up from her chair unaided.

So we set to work with Liz and with perseverance and her belief in us and a little bit of 'home work' on her behalf on her 4th class she managed to 'Sit to Stand' 12 times in one minute. She is now walking taller, stronger and steadier, her confidence has increased so much she smiles and laugh the whole class.

We are all so proud of you Liz as are your fellow class members and this is borne out by the rapturous cheers and applause you got when you achieved your 12 repetitions unaided.

We have two members of the month here is member number one:
Torill Seger
At the beginning of this year Torill decided she needed to improve her current fitness levels, so in addition to her two weekly sessions Torill joined our Codford class. As her goal was to increase her overall fitness and get stronger we gradually incorporated a more intense regime and what a transformation. Torill took all the challenges thrown at her with enthusiasm and determination which soon rubbed off on the whole group creating a new dynamic energy and a zest into the class which was previously missing.

Torill you are a proper Happy Hearts Team member.

By Happy HeartsIf you've attended a Happy Hearts class, you've probably done squats, lunges, sit-to-stands, wall presses, or other strength-building exercises. While these movements help with balance, mobility, and everyday activities, exciting new research suggests they may also play an important r...
