Summer League - Week 7

As we head into the penultimate week of the Summer League season, we have another great set of fixtures lined up, and the weather forecast looks promising too!.

This week's games:

Tuesday: Bourne Badgers v Gillingham Giants
Wednesday: Sarum Swifts v Nadder Snakes
Thursday: Warminster School v Andover
Friday: Wylye Foxes v Gillingham Gladiators

As always, there will be plenty of hockey to enjoy throughout the week, and spectators are always welcome. However, a special mention must go to Wednesday's fixture between the Sarum Swifts and the Nadder Snakes.

With England's opening match against Croatia taking place later that evening, the Swifts and Snakes captains have opened the fixture up to their entire squads, with players taking part in a mini 7s tournament before heading upstairs to watch the England game, which kicks off at 9:00pm.

Everyone is welcome, so why not come down, enjoy some hockey, grab a drink, and see if it's coming home?

We are delighted to announce that Salisbury’s very own Susanna Ribeiro Gallagher has been chosen to represent Portugal U21s.

She heads out to Portugal on the 16th June for training and the on the 26th travels to Ourense in NW Spain for a friendly against Spain.

Umpires Corner - Meet the Team
After a number of years as Umpire Coordinator Karen Hitchings stood down in that role at the end of the season, although we will still see her officiating on the pitch.

Our new Umpire Coordinator is Chris Horton and we caught up with him to find out more about him and his thoughts on hockey and umpiring.

When and where did you start playing hockey and what position did you play
At school 50+ years ago, also with Dad in Marlborough HC 4ths. I started as a left back, then inside left, then as captain wherever no one else would play, or forward sweeper base of diamond.

How long have you been at SHC and have you played or coached any teams
Five years with SHC, haven't played for 20 years, was never a coach, but captained lower teams for around 20 seasons.

What position do you hold at SHC
I organised umpires 2021-2023, and I’m back as Umpire Coordinator from 2026 onwards

What made you start umpiring
It was my turn in a one-team club, then as team captain, if I did game before/after, their captain had a duty to find umpire for mine.

How long have you been umpiring
I first took the whistle in early 1980s, Level 1 in 1996, I was Hampshire appointed in 2005 and then Southern Counties in 2011. I ran Hampshire Level 1 courses 2007-2013, 50+ L1 assessments over the years.

What do you enjoy about umpiring
Contributing to the match, by protecting skill, the skills come out, so better hockey to umpire. I also enjoy seeing others discover that reward.

Your best moment in hockey
Surbiton L2 3 v 4 Spencer L top of league clash umpiring with my colleague Rebekah Woodcock - now Becks Edwards FIH - and Rob Stamp the most perceptive and encouraging umpire coach I know.

What one rule would you ask players to study up on
9.3 “Players must not touch handle or interfere with other players or their sticks or clothing” It's a stick-ball game, but otherwise non-contact.

Final thoughts on umpiring
Umpiring can be a challenge, but it's the reward that brings us back every week. More should give it a try: it could be you.

Even the rain and wind couldn't put people off attending the Saturday Delemopment Session. Another fantastic attendance.

Saturday development sessions run fortnightly during the summer. A great way to hone your skills if you are new or coming back to hockey.

Each year at the Salisbury Hockey Club EOSD one female member of the club is awarded the Pearle Award given to someone who has shown a notable contribution to the club by providing support, time and active involvement and always being a champion of SHC.

This years winner was Karen Hitchings. Karen has been umpire coordinator for a number of years. A role central to the sucess of the club. She stood down at the end of the season but still plans to be seen umpiring at Skew Bridge.

Unfortunately Karen was unable to attend the EOSD so we caught up with her at the Friday Walking and Flyerz sessions to present her with the much deserved award.

Well done Karen thank for all you have done for the club.

Walking and Flyerz sessions run every week on Thursday (6-7pm) and Friday (10-11am).
