Whats On This Weekend - League Starts.... for some

Some may have taken a little time away from hockey, while others have played right through the summer but for everyone, the new league season is just around the corner.

For most teams, there’s one final weekend of friendlies to navigate before the league campaigns begin next week. There may even be time for a garden centre or two.
But not everyone is waiting until next week…

WOMEN’S 2s KICK OFF THEIR LEAGUE CAMPAIGN
After finishing second last season and securing promotion on the final day, the Women’s 2s are straight into league action this weekend.

Bournemouth finished third, but following league reorganisation, both sides were promoted alongside Wi******er.

Now, in a largely unfamiliar Division 1 South, Salisbury find themselves facing a very familiar opponent in their opening fixture, Bournemouth, push back is 11:30am at home.

Bournemouth will provide a tough opening test, but Salisbury will be looking to get their campaign off to a flying start.

ELSEWHERE…
The Women’s 1s fine-tune their preparations with an afternoon friendly away at Havant.

The Men’s 1s head to Romsey for a triangular fixture, taking on Romsey before facing Portsmouth.

The Women’s 5s are up early for a 10:15am away fixture against Southampton.

The Men’s 3s welcome Shepton Mallet to Shew Bridge for a 1:00pm push-back.

The Women’s 4s host Southampton at 2:30pm.

And rounding off the day is an inter-club clash, with newly promoted Striders taking on recently relegated Men’s 4s.

There is plenty happening around the club this weekend and it would be great to see plenty of support around the pitch as our teams prepare for the season ahead and especially for the Women’s 2s, as they begin life in Division 1 South.

Meet our new Social Media Lead

Keen to develop Salisbury Hockey Club’s social media presence, we recently put out a call for someone to take on the role of Club Social Media Lead.

The aim is to develop and drive our presence across our established Facebook and Instagram channels, while also increasing our visibility on YouTube and exploring the potential of TikTok.

Ultimately, it’s about telling the stories of our club, our teams, players, volunteers and members and sharing them with our own community and the wider Salisbury and hockey communities.

We’re delighted to announce that Dave Hillier has agreed to take on the role.

Dave has a long history of creating content for Salisbury Hockey Club, as well as through his work with the Scout Movement and British Forces Radio, so we’re really excited to have him leading the club’s social media development.

Of his new role Dave said:
“I’m excited to get involved, but I will need help. I’m looking to develop a team of content creators who can work together to cover all aspects of the club. You can help as little or as much as you like, but it would be great to have your involvement.”

SO, WE NEED YOU
You don’t need to be a social media expert or have a professional camera. If you enjoy taking photos, filming video, writing, interviewing people, creating reels or simply spotting a good story, there’s a role for you.

Whether you can contribute every week or just occasionally, Dave would love to hear from you.

Where are our teams playing this year?

With pre-season training underway and Club Day just around the corner, it’s time to look ahead to where our adult teams will be competing this season.

There are no major structural changes to the leagues this year, but South Central’s efforts to balance league numbers have resulted in changes for several of our teams.

So, where will our teams be playing, who will they be facing, and what can we look forward to in 2026/27?

Let’s take a look.

Women’s Section

The Women’s 1s were relegated to Premier Division 2 last season and will be determined to bounce straight back. They begin their campaign away at Wycombe, looking to make a positive start to the season.

The Women’s 2s are back in Division 1 South following promotion last season. They have home advantage for their opening game, welcoming Bournemouth on Saturday 12 September.

The Women’s 3s finished comfortably mid-table last season, but league restructuring means they have dropped into Forest Division 1, where they join the Women’s 4s. The 4s enjoyed a strong season last year, so both teams will be looking to make their mark.

The Women’s 5s also faced a difficult decision following their hard-earned promotion. With restructuring set to place three Salisbury teams in the same league, they declined promotion and will remain in Forest Division 2. They will look to put that disappointment behind them when they face Southampton on the opening day.

The Women’s 6s will also compete in Forest Division 2 and will be looking to build on an excellent debut season.

Men’s Section

The Men’s 1s finished mid-table in Division 1 last season and will be determined to make a strong start this time around. New captain Rory Manson has been working hard with the squad throughout the summer, organising additional pre-season training, Run Club sessions and indoor hockey to ensure the team is ready for the challenge ahead.

The Men’s 2s and 3s remain in Divisions 3 and 4 respectively. Both teams will be looking to build on last season and, having dropped points they felt they should have picked up, will be determined to cut out those costly errors.

There has been a change of places for the Striders and Men’s 4s, with the Striders moving up into Division 5 and the 4s dropping into Division 6.

The Striders enjoyed an outstanding first season back in the adult leagues, winning their division in impressive fashion. It will be fascinating to see whether they can maintain that momentum at the higher level.

For the Men’s 4s, relegation last season will provide plenty of motivation as they look to turn things around and make an immediate impact in Division 6.

The Strollers continue in the Masters O60 South Division, with their first game a home fixture against the Guildford Weysiders.

The Women’s 2s get the season underway on Saturday 12 September at home to Bournemouth, with all our other adult teams starting their campaigns on 19 September.

It promises to be a big season, with every team having its own targets and ambitions. Good luck to everyone for 2026/27, the rest of the club will be behind each team all the way.

Try Goalkeeping at the Pick Up A Stick Day

Ever fancied trying something a little different? Maybe you’ve played hockey before, played in goal in another sport, or simply wondered what it’s like to be the person standing between the ball and the net?

Now’s your chance to give it a go!

Salisbury Hockey Club is particularly keen to develop new goalkeepers for the Ladies section ahead of the new season. Our existing keepers are fantastic, but they can’t be everywhere every week so we’re looking for people who might fancy taking on the challenge.

And don’t worry if you’ve never kept goal before. We’ll provide all the goalkeeper kit and equipment you need, and our coaches will help you get started.

Summer Camp at Salisbury Hockey Club is in full swing.

The weather is on our side, the pitch is busy and the players are getting stuck into a full programme of training and skills development.

With Jon Royce and his coaching team leading the sessions, there is plenty of knowledge, experience and new skills being transferred.

Lots of hard work, plenty of learning and heaps of fun.

Out of the D - Aoife and Verity in the Netherlands

Salisbury Hockey Club players have enjoyed an international summer of Masters hockey, with Women’s 1st team player Aoife Lawrence representing Ireland at the Masters World Cup in Schiedam, in the west of the Netherlands, while Ladies 2 captain and newly appointed Women’s Club Captain Verity Plummer joined an international Alliance team at the International Masters Cup.

Representing Ireland in the Women’s O35 competition, Aoife and her teammates opened their Pool A campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa, before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Belgium. A win against Scotland and loss to the USA saw Ireland progress to the placement games, where they again faced Belgium.

Another closely fought contest finished 1-1 before Ireland prevailed 3-2 in the shootout. That victory set up a ninth-place play-off against Australia, where Ireland produced a dominant performance to secure an impressive 4-1 victory and ninth place overall.

On her return Aoife had these thoughts on the World Cup, "Playing the World Cup in the home of hockey, the Netherlands, made the experience even more special. The facilities were incredible, and the standard of the tournament felt even higher than in Cape Town two years ago. Sadly, the results didn’t go our way again, as we narrowly missed out on the quarter finals and finished 9th overall. A real highlight of the tournament was getting the chance to play against some new opposition, including the USA, Belgium and Australia."

Verity meanwhile joined Alliance, a diverse side made up of Masters players from different nations. With limited opportunities to train together before tournaments, the team faced a significant challenge, particularly as this was their first time playing together.

Alliance lost their opening game 2-0 to the USA and suffered two further defeats, but showed impressive resilience to finish the tournament strongly, winning their final three matches.

For both Salisbury players, the tournaments provided valuable international experience and the chance to compete alongside players from around the world. Their summer exploits will no doubt provide plenty of inspiration as they return to Salisbury Hockey Club for the new season.

After such a memorable summer, both will be hoping to bring their experience back to the club and make an impact on the season ahead.

Earlier in the year Salisbury Hockey Club was chosen by the Co-op as one of its Local Community Fund causes for the coming year.

Our club applied to become a local cause to help us continue our work with local schools and expand access for home-educated young people, connecting more children through sport, teamwork, and friendship.

Every Co-op member can help boost our funding simply by choosing Salisbury Hockey Club as their local cause. There’s a base level of funding already in place, but the more members who select us, the more funding we’ll receive to grow our inclusive hockey programmes.
