SALISBURY PLAYERS QUALIFY FOR LEAMINGTON

This weekend saw the latter stages of the men’s national competitions taking place at Devizes BC.

First up on the Saturday was the semi final of the Men’s Pairs where Fraser Boynton and Tom Warner took on Westlecot’s Dave Murray and Neil Smith. The Salisbury pair stormed into a strong 18-6 lead, before the Swindon duo dug in and scored successive doubles to bring the score to 18-14 to Salisbury heading into the final end. Despite a great strike from Neil on his third bowl, Tom managed to draw right behind the jack which couldn’t be removed and the Salisbury boys took the game 19-14 and booked their place in Leamington.

In the Final the Salisbury duo faced the experienced pair of Chris Cheesley and Mel Biggs from Royal Wootton Bassett. Unfortunately this was one step too far and the Salisbury boys had to settle for runners up 17-18.

On the Sunday we had plenty of representation for the club. First up was the Men’s Fours where Jim White, Graham Annetts, Toby Fiddy and James Vincent took on a strong Holt side of Andy Young, Tony Keating, Justin Davis and Wayne Snook. A back and forth game with good heads from both teams saw the Salisbury four trailing 12-14 into the last end.

After the skips’ first bowls each the Salisbury four held the required two shots to force an extra end. A great bowl from Wayne saw him get second wood more or less jack high. James had an opportunity to lift the bowl and stay to claim three shots, the game and their place in Leamington. Unfortunately James’ bowl was slightly too wide and so the Salisbury boys fell short by one shot 13-14. Good luck to the Holt boys at Leamington.

Next up saw two Salisbury players in singles matches. By this time the rain had really settled in and the tricky conditions were apparent.

Nick Revell faced the experienced Graham Shadwell from Spencer Moulton in the Men’s Singles. Nick’s bowls suited the rink brilliantly just finishing that little bit stronger. Despite a slow start Nick came onto a brilliant game and took the match 21-12 and booked his place at Leamington in the Singles for the first time. Nick went onto play Graham Hatherall of Royal Wootton Bassett in the final and continued in fine form taking an 18-10 lead. However, some big bowls from Graham saw him come right back into it and take a 20-18 lead, a single from Nick saw the match enter its final end. A loose end from both players saw Nick collect the two shots and take the match 21-20 and be crowned Men’s Singles county champion.

Unfortunately, the same success was not had by Toby Fiddy in the Men’s Under 25 Singles. He faced a strong player from Westlecot Jake Webster who has been in fine form this season including earning his Middleton Cup debut. The game was very tight with never more than one or two shots in it for most of the match. Unfortunately Toby’s run came to an end losing 17-21. Great effort Toby.

The weekend follows Tom Warner having qualified to Leamington in the Last 16 of the Champion of Champions. He faces Vinnie O’Neil from Middlesbrough on 15 August.

A great run from the Salisbury lads and the Club wishes them all the best at the national finals next month.

TOP CLUB RUN COMES TO AN END 😢

It wasn’t to be for our Men in the last 32 of the Bowls England Top Club competition. We bowed out to Headington BC of Oxfordshire on the neutral green at Tilehurst BC.

We put up a brave fight despite missing a few players due to unavailability on the dates offered. This meant a small move around whilst trying to keep the team similar to our previous victories.

With the 2 wood narrowly going Headington’s way and our pairs being well beaten, the game ended with the fours. The score was tied playing the last end but Headington claimed the all important shot.
At this point our singles was winning and our triples behind with ends to play but that all important point for Headington meant the game was over.

Well done to all involved for Salisbury BC’s best run in this competition 👏

We currently sit second in the Salisbury and District league 👌

***SALISBURY MEN REACH THE ALL ENGLAND LAST 32 IN THE TOP CLUB***

It’s been a monumental week for the club as we managed to overcome Royal Wootton Bassett in the Wiltshire area final of the National Top Club competition with a 3-2 victory at Devonshire Road.

In horrendous weather conditions the green held up well for the most part with heavier downpours coming towards the end of the match.

The game got off to a brilliant start with a convincing win in the 2 wood singles. Whilst the pairs were well beaten our fours team played excellently to also win with a couple ends to spare. With the triples slightly ahead reaching the climax the big moment came with a win in the 4 wood singles, a 12-19 deficit being turned in to a 21-20 win so the triples didn’t have to conclude.

This is the furthest the club has reached in the competition and we now travel to a neutral venue to face Headington BC (Oxfordshire) in the next round. Well done to all involved.

Wednesday 14th June
Wilts Men’s 4RL

Salisbury visited high-flying Chippenham Town in the Four Rink League looking to bounce back from a narrow defeat at Holt.
Whilst the overall win became out of grasp due to one rink going down heavily, the other three rinks all went down to the last end with the remaining 6 points on offer. Tom Warner’s rink picked up a 2 to tie, Jamie Reynolds’ rink dropped a 2 to lose by 1 and Nick Revell’s rink lost a 5 to lose by 2 so we unfortunately fell to a 1-13 defeat.

Full Rink Scores:

Rink 2: A.Plumb, G.Annetts, F.Boynton & T.Warner drew with D.Williams 16-16

Rink 3: B.Mortimer, R.Blackwell, B.Pike & B.Armstrong lost to N.Connor 6-25

Rink 4: J.White, G.House, J.Vincent & J.Reynolds lost to S.Heseltine 16-17

Rink 5: T.Fiddy, S.Gregory, J.Moody & N.Revell lost to J.Haselton 19-21

Final Score: Salisbury 57 (1) Chippenham Town 79 (13)

Wednesday 21st June
Wilts Men’s 4RL

We then welcomed Spencer Moulton for what has always been a tasty encounter over the past few seasons where the match tends to go down to the wire. This was no exception as it literally went down to the last bowl. With the match looking like ending in a tie, Jamie Reynolds had last bowl in hand and managed to turn a Spencer Moulton bowl out under the jack and claim a 2 shot victory for the Salisbury boys.

Rink 1: A.Plumb, J.Hurle, G.Annetts & T.Warner beat G.Shadwell 15-14

Rink 3: T.Fiddy, S.Gregory, J.Moody & N.Revell lost to A.Bolwell 9-20

Rink 4: B.Pike, G.House, F.Boynton & J.Reynolds beat R.Francis 19-13

Rink 5: P.Mortimer, J.White, B.Armstrong & J.Vincent beat N.Yeoman 16-10

Final Score: Salisbury 59 (12) Spencer Moulton 57 (2)
